Volcano -> 1.0.4.5 Resupply ship design issue (5/6/2010 5:06:07 PM)

I started today a new game with the latest patch, playing in a 1400 stars elliptic galaxy as human with 6 auto-generated other empires and in sandbox mode. Having set the expansion glider at starting, the largest ship I can build is the frigate.

In order the ensure my first fleet to be able to come back without falling short of fuel after attacking a pirate base quite far from my planets, I wanted to build a resupply ship and I could'nt because of its size. But when I looked at the resupply ship design (I had left automation turned on on ship designs) I saw a red warning indicating that something was missing in the design. I uploaded a screenshot of the design to show you.

I tried to modify the design, and the warning disappeared after I have added three more gas extractor to the ship (and incidentally it asked me to add more life support components and habitation modules).

I have also made a savegame before trying to modify the design, if you want it.

The way I handled that problem was to knock off a bunch of the components until I had a ship below size 600 that still had at least 200 units in cargo, docking, and extractors.

Final tally was 1x Command Center 1x ECM 1x Targetting Computer 1x Damage Control 1x Proximity Array 1x Long Range Scanner 1x Resource Sensor 4x Energy Collectors 6x Hab Modules 6x Life Support 10x Torpedoes 4x Gas Extractors 1x Hyperdrive 8x Docking Bays 10x Cargo Bays 6x Fuel Cells 3x Reactors 6x Engines 2x Thrust Vectors 5x Armor 5x Shields

YMMV depending on current tech levels for each tree.

I'd be really nice to have some of these designs scale to your maximum ship size automatically, but that's only in place for a couple of them as of 1.0.4.5. (Destroyers and troop transports)

And I just re-read your post because something wasn't making sense in my reply... yeah, you shouldn't have seen that red warning since the base design should have had enough of everything already, even if it was too large to build.

<mumbles something about time for a nap>

The design I show on the screenshot is the automated one. After taking the screenshot I modified it saved it and played during about an hour. But I have just loaded my last savedgame (ship design still automated) and I have just seen that the design I had made has been removed and that the new design is identical to the one on my screenshot, with the same red warning...

So there is clearly a problem with the automated resupply ship design...

It is indeed a problem if the AI ship designer is designing "illegal" designs.

Making a design thats too big for you to build is dubious, making a design that is "illegal" by the game's own rules is a bug.

Volcano -> RE: 1.0.4.5 Resupply ship design issue (5/7/2010 3:44:49 PM)

Another strange thing with the latest update is also the fact that, in a game created with the expansion glider on "starting", it is impossible to build a resupply ship, sized over 1000, but possible to build a medium and large spaceports, whose sizes are respectively over 1000 and 2000, even though the spaceports and the resupply ships are build in the same location : a colony construction yard...

So in my opinion, if a colony construction yard is able to build a large spaceport, it should also be able to build a resupply ship. But if a colony construction yard is not able to buiuld a resupply ship, it should not be able to build a medium or a large spaceport...

And what we have here is that colony construction yard are able to build medium and large spaceports, but not able to build resupply ships... that sounds pretty contradictory ! [&:]

Hence my scaled down version of a resupply ship listed above... And that's what I originally thought you were talking about until I reread your post after writing the response.

It'd be nice if the template for resupply ships scaled like destroyers and troopships now do, but the original problem of an illegal design at least needs fixed.

The problem is that this arbitrary rule was apparently added after the fact, and makes it impossible to actually construct a functional ship that isn't ludicrous, since the rule has no correlation to functional purpose and, in fact, appears to be complete asspull. Frankly, this new update has drastically decreased the playability of the game, even if it doesn't crash outright anymore. For instance, does corruption ever cap out? Mine seems to continue to climb skyward, now over 50%. It looks to be heading towards 100%, after which the game becomes unplayable because it becomes impossible to get any income without resorting to bizarre exploits.

Thanks for the report Volcano. Will add a fix for this in 1.0.5

The ship size limits for building resupply ships vs space ports at colonies is admittedly arbitrary. We'll look at how that can be better handled.
