bspeer -> Okay, I am ready to take the Plunge!!! (5/6/2010 5:46:35 PM)

After fooling around with smaller scenarios vs the AI and one abortive (my fault/frustration) scenario vs a worthy opponent I am ready to try the whole enchilada vs the AI.

I try to read as much as I can in the forums but here is what I need to know:

1. I am going to play Japan, am I nuts?
2. I THINK consensus is 2 day turns for this?
3. What settings should I use?
4. What will be my biggest obstacle to playing this effectively?
5. Any other advice?

Thanks!

1. I found playing as allied easier to start my first pbem. Perhaps you are.
2. 2-day turns do seem to be the new 1-day turns.
3. The usual, historic torps, etc.
4. Learning the production model. Deciding what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it.
5. Learn to play effectively while drinking.

Best of luck in your game.

That's the problem, I have read so much I am not sure what is the "usual!"

I have always found Irish Whiskey to be the most wonderful suave for my psyche.

Definitely stick with whiskey or beer. Vodka caused me to sail my main BB fleet around the map on their way to the Tsushima Strait, with all that system damage they were in no shape to fight.[;)]

P.S. Enjoy the game.

I reccommend 1 day turns PBEM. I feel the game is best played this way. Other than that, US torpedo duds on. Japan is fun because you control the pace of the early war and measure youself against historical results. Allies are fun to try to increase the speed of victory.

If you are unfamiliar with production, I might suggest playing allies so you can get the major game mechanics underfoot before diving into the extra economy elements.

Either way you will have fun

I would install Tracker if your going to run the Japanese economy. Since the original version came out with WITP, I don't try to do it without it.

Take your time vs AI and don't think it a waste to play for one to two months and then re-start it all over again. The "learning cliff" can be quite steep. [:D]

Versus the AI, you get to make the house rules.  :)

I generally play 2-day turns since it really helps move the game along and discourages my tendency to micromanage.  OTOH, when I getting ready to start something intricate (i.e. big invasion with supporting bombardment and carrier strikes) I don't hesitate to switch back to one day turns.

I've tried to play the Japanese several times but always give up.  I find the first day as the Allies to be almost overwhelming and completely impossible as the Empire.

Speaking of which ...  once you start I _highly_ recommend saving your "first day" turn in it's own slot so you don't need to redo all the scut-work if you decide to restart the campaign game.  I've actually got my first turn save archived offline under version control (git, if anybody cares).

Good luck and have fun!

WHAT?!? you can change a running game between 1-day and 2-day turns? Is this a supported feature or a glitch, I never heard of that before. Also is this possible in a PBEM?

Definitely can do it versus AI. I'm pretty sure you can't change settings in a PBEM game.
