pcall -> Question to developers: Multiplayer in a future patch? (5/8/2010 2:27:59 AM)

Is it possible there will be a multiplayer patch in the future? The way I see it's either improved AI or a multiplayer patch. Personally I would love to see both!

I hope not.

We hear too much about "balance" already and its only AI players who can complain.

Surely i'm not one of the developers but, i think it is a quite bad idea because of the following:

*Normaly Multiplayer games must have fast internet connections what some users don't have.

*Games that have the Multiplayer sector lack attention on the Singleplayer sector.

Also the lags and ping would be troublesome. Also experienced player may bother in servers for newbs and then get an easy victory. So Multiplayer would be quite a bad idea.

I'm quite happy with this remaining single-player.  To make a good multiplayer game, you normally have to build that in from the start.  Also, the graphics lag is bad enough already without adding network lag to the mix as well.

For a game like Distant Worlds, lag and ping aren't nearly as critical as they are for games like first person shooters. Even for RTS games like Red Alert 3, lag isn't as critical as with first person shooter games where your ping needs to be as low as possible.

I live in Hong Kong for example, and I can play against Red Alert 3 players located in the US without any problems.

So I do not see latency as a major problem. However keeping everything synchronized on both computers does sound a bit daunting due to the absolutely massive game world that DW has.

it would be a cool feature but it will never *ever* be added

At the very least, MP would never be added in a mere patch. That would require a full-blown expansion.

Personally, though, I hope the game remains singleplayer-only.

Yeah, I know there's nothing I hate more than sharing a great gaming experience with a friend.

Ohh wait..

Multiplayer would make the game 5x better at least.

True but that depends on how optimized the game is for multiplayer at the moment.

Lets concentrate all effort on getting it working nicely first.

Multiplayer would be a neat addition but it should not have priority (yet).

Besides; only the people at Matrix know if this game can realisticly support Multiplayer without needing an expansion or severe rewrite.
