Spacecadet -> Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/8/2010 8:08:55 PM)

This is the second time I've gotten the "Distant Worlds has encountered an error and needs to shutdown" message.

The first time was on an older version, but this most recent occurrence is on 1.04.5.

There's not much point in providing a save, as it is ~3 hours earlier so it won't really help [:(] I'm not running autosave because of the issues I had with it in 1.04.b4.

When I get this error, the game continues to run for maybe 10 - 15 seconds more before it dumps to Desktop. Would it be possible to implement some kind of error log so this type of issue can be tracked down?

I've been playing on 100 Star maps and 3 AI's on XP with 2 GB of RAM. I wouldn't think it would be Memory issue, but who knows.

I'm really hesitant to play a larger map with this issue still looming - it's definitely taking a lot of the fun out of things.

I second this, i might be able to fix the savegame, but only as a last resort hehee

Erik Rutins -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/8/2010 8:53:32 PM)

First, please turn the autosave back on, it should be working fine in 1.0.4 official.

Second, could you check the Event Viewer in your Control Panel Administrative Tools to see if there's any info there?

Well, my Event Log is amazingly clean - no error messages/logs to be seen.

Just an FYI, when 1.04.5 came out I uninstalled DW, removed .Net (with the cleanup tool), and ran a Registry cleaner to remove all Registry entries. I then rebooted and did a clean install and then let the System sit idle so mscorsvw.exe could finish compiling all the .Net files.

Should be about as clean and stable an installation as possible.

Spacecadet -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/8/2010 11:27:33 PM)

Sooooooo,

Autosave worked once.

Second Autosave hung . . . .

Why am I the only one that seems to be having trouble with this?

Griz -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/9/2010 1:15:32 AM)

I had one of these. it said "Distant Worlds has encountered an error" etc but I could see the game still running behind the error (ships moving around, etc)

so I dragged the error box off to the side, saved the game, clicked the button on the error to close the game, started it back up, loaded the save, and kept playing for several hours with no further errors.

What location do you have it set to save to?

How long did you wait for the save to complete before deciding it had hung?

It's saving in the default directory, I haven't changed anything along those lines.

I waited a several minutes, it usually only takes about 10 - 15 seconds at most.

Here's a little more info for post freeze. It seems whenever this happens and I CTRL ALT DEL to use the Task Manager to shutdown, that some .Net "hooks" are lost. When I do a Registry scan after these incidents there are several (perhaps a dozen) .Net Registry entries that are orphaned.

I just finished ripping out .Net, rebooted and reinstalled .Net and am currently waiting on mscorsvw.exe to finish compiling before getting back into the game.

soundhack -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/9/2010 3:00:48 AM)

I've had this happen three times already, all since I upgraded to the 1.0.4.5. Very frustrating. One additional info is that Comodo Firewall indicates that the main program is trying to run "DW20.exe," and asks if I want to let it, right before it crashes. If I deny it crashes immediately. If I allow it goes on for a few seconds (one time a minute or so) before crashing.

I'll try to get a save game close to the "run DW20.exe" event and post it.

It seems to happen on the second save.

Here's a sample of the orphaned .Net Registry Keys:

I'm not sure if it's the same list each time or not. I'm thinking the last time there was an mscore*.lib in there (not sure of the total name).

BTW - This is in regards to the hanging save issue, we kinda went off topic a bit [:D]

JamesM -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/9/2010 12:47:13 PM)

I am having the same CTD issue.  It may be caused by autosave.  I have left the default autosave period of 30 minutes and the game seems to CTD 30 minutes into playing.  It does not hang it just comes with the need to shutdown message.

I am also using Game Booster to shut down programs and process that may slow the game down.

DW20.exe is Dr Watson, Microsoft's error reporting tool. Unfortunately it looks like it's actually getting in the way of seeing the real error that you're encountering.

If you're willing, you could try disabling this using the steps outlined at this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841477

Then we can get the Distant Worlds error message and hopefully solve your problem.

Those registry keys relate to .Net 1.0 and 1.1, not .Net 2.0.

Distant Worlds requires .Net 2.0 and 3.0 to run. Do you definitely have .Net 2.0 and 3.0 installed?

You can check by looking in the folder C:\Windows\assembly\. Look for an entry named "System" - it's version should be 2.0.0.0. Look for another entry named "System.Core" - this should have the version 3.0.0.0 or 3.5.0.0.

Spacecadet -> RE: Distant Worlds needs to shutdown (5/11/2010 2:15:11 AM)

I have 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 version files in that folder. System.Core is 3.5.

When I ripped out and reinstalled .Net, I ran the dotnetfx35.exe in the Matrix redist folder. I thought 3.5 included all the versions of .Net that would be needed.

Do I need to dig up 1.0 or 2.0 and install them as well?
