Summary of Operations 5/27/43 Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/26 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Canton Is. Detected status of Canton Is shows unidentified Jap planes based there, airfield size 2(0), port size 2(2), no other visible Japanese forces or activity. Sigint entry for 5/26 reports a second day of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Maleolap. Detected status of Maleolap continues to show no visible Japanese forces or activity. These units included four USAAF fighter squadrons (all assigned to 13th USAAF) equipped with small numbers of A-36 Mustangs (not due to enter production until 10/43). Current plans are to temporarily keep these squadrons in a pilot training role until advanced fighter planes become available in sufficient numbers to properly equip these units, pilots in the squadrons will be partially trained fighter pilots (40-50 experience, 70 air skill) completing a second level of training (strafing skill). Other air units arriving on WP-55 included a USN land-based dive-bomber squadron (16 SBD-3), and an USN recon squadron (8 PB4Y-1P Liberators) – the latter two squadrons both ready for front-line service. Daily coastwatcher entries from 5/26 Operations report follow. The spotted Jap TF is a probable transport TF delivering cargo into Port Moresby. Current information reports the Jap TF with 9 ships and departing Port Moresby this game turn moving on an E heading. An attempt to launch a naval air strike using a small force of available US and Australian Catalinas in Townsville proved unsuccessful (pilots in these squadrons untrained in naval attack). No other Allied bombers are currently based in NE Australia within attack range of the Jap TF. 5/26 Combat Events report entries of this action follow. 3 x PBY-4 Catalina unable to locate target due to range or weather 5 x Catalina I from No.33 Sqn RAAF flight failed to link up returning to base Two USAAF 2E bomber squadrons equipped and trained for naval and skip-bombing strikes (32 B-25D1 Mitchells total) are available in Australia and ready for immediate use – the two squadrons are now planned to transfer to NE Australia and begin operations to interdict Japanese ship movements in the Port Moresby area. Four additional USAAF 2E bomber squadrons in Australia are in advanced stages of preparation for specialized use in naval strike and skip bombing missions. Two first-line Australian 2E torpedo bombing squadrons (24 Beaufort VIII total) are also available as an addition to this force. Perhaps it’s time to try out skip-bombing.
