wneumann -> RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager) (7/14/2017 6:00:29 PM)

The Big Picture 02/10/45 – So Now What…

At this point in the campaign (and actually for some time prior to now), I’ve been examining the Allied strategic options that are most viable and have a significant possibility of success using the tools that are available.

The fall of China in 1943 and Pillager’s subsequent transfer of Japanese forces out of China to other theatres (primarily the Pacific) greatly altered the balance of the campaign against a successful Allied offensive in the Pacific theatres – at least to the extent which it historically occurred. Japanese LCU reinforcements of Pacific island garrisons from China plus maximum fortification levels on (at least) most Japanese-controlled islands require a considerably increased Allied invasion landing force in this campaign (compared to historical Allied landing forces) to capture virtually any island position, the Nauru Is invasion earlier in this campaign proving that out. Numbers of (historical) Allied combat LCU available are insufficient to attack in these conditions and maintain an advance at any rate of speed. More than half the Allied combat LCU in SW Pacific theatre are currently in re-build and recovery from the action at Buna. British and Indian ground forces currently available in the Burma/India theatre are also insufficient in number (without significant reinforcement) to crack Pillager’s Japanese positions in Burma (also reinforced with Jap LCU from China).

I basically have two available pools of significant Allied combat LCU reinforcements yet to enter this campaign – (1) US/British ground forces arriving from Europe starting in 8/45, and (2) Soviet ground forces released after Russian entry in the campaign. My present view on using these reinforcements is leaning toward a ground war in mainland Asia. Given that Pillager transferred a large part of Japanese ground forces out of China, a ground offensive into China could be the best remaining Allied strategic offensive option in this campaign. This scenario would include the historical Russian ground offensive from the north (moving southward into China from Manchuria) plus an US/British ground offensive via the Burma road link into southern China. A successful Allied ground offensive into China has the possibility of “re-creating” Chinese army and air forces in the event Chungking is liberated. As part of this option, a pool of USAAF B-29 Superfort squadrons already in the game are enroute to India to begin strategic bombing of Japanese industry in China from bases in northern India. All B-29 Superfort air units yet to enter the campaign as reinforcements are planned to be allocated for strategic bombing of China as well.

In the Pacific naval war… there is little question Pillager is employing KB mainly as a fleet-in-being, using it occasionally for counter-attacks while (probably) at the same time keeping it beyond reach of US Main Carrier force. A possible and likely objective of US Main Carrier force is catching KB in favorable conditions and reducing it regardless of US carrier ship losses. In terms of this campaign, probability of any Allied VP victory is low to none.

Overall Allied strategic plans in the Pacific theatres are to continue gradual pressure against Japanese island positions. Amphibious invasions of island positions will likely require LCU landing forces considerably greater than historical, these LCU drawn from a historical pool of available US and Allied combat LCU in the Pacific now at its maximum size. Island hopping will be continued, however, not all major Japanese strongholds can be bypassed. Amphibious operations in the Pacific will be conducted with the view that any significant island position is now a Japanese stronghold as a result of Jap LCU reinforcements from China (added to historical Jap ground forces along with late-war Jap LCU reinforcements entering the game) plus maximum fortification levels at these islands.

Another Allied offensive option under consideration in Australia is re-capturing Darwin via an amphibious invasion operation rather than by overland march. This operation could potentially open access to DEI for later Allied offensive operations. An Allied invasion to re-capture Darwin would likely involve LCU forces from SW Pacific theatre.

My overall view of Allied chances in this campaign is becoming less on achieving any significant VP victory and more toward playing out my remaining options and getting as close as possible to winning in any form. At times frustrating and tempting to call it quits but “Screw it!”.

While I’ve been mostly quiet on the AFB vs JFB debates, I do have one AE play balance issue. China is too easy for JFB’s to take out. And once China falls, everything else is affected. I’ll play now, bitch later and let what happened speak for itself.
