Summary of Operations 03/24/45 Rabaul Operations area: Parts of the Namatainai amphibious force reach Namatanai base hex despite delays and interaction with Japanese submarines and light surface combat TFs. Approximately half the invasion force TF reached Namatanai, many of the invasion force TF including Surface combat/Bombardment elements and about half the surviving US Escort Carrier force automatically aborted and began returning to base (Milne Bay) during or following the night phase of this game turn. This probably occurred after the result of the first surface combat action (AAR) below the Allied TF in this action (by coincidence) happened to be the TF that all other TF in the Namatanai amphibious force were either directly or indirectly ordered to follow. Needless to say
the landing force TF formation began to disintegrate. Lucky hit. In the meantime, KB task forces (five TFs, 50 ships total) arrive and begin air strike operations against Allied invasion TFs. In the last two game turns, Pillager succeeded in sufficiently delaying forward movement of Namatanai invasion TFs to allow timing of KBs arrival. At this point, the largest TF containing four of the five US divisions scheduled to land reached Namatanai base hex escorted by a small number of DD no longer escorting CVEs (these all sunk) these TF easily within reach of the KB. The decision was made to immediately begin landing these troops at Namatanai having two unloading phases to disembark as many troops and supply as possible before KB probably sinks most if not all amphibious transport in these TF. AARs of surface and air combat actions with the Namatanai amphibious force follow. A second chapter to this saga involving KB and the US Main Carrier force follows. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, at Feni Islands 108,126, Range 7,000 Yards Japanese Ships DD Murakumo DD Mochizuki DD Yunagi DD Hokaze Allied Ships LST-17, Shell hits 37, and is sunk LST-18, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk LST-25, Shell hits 74, and is sunk LST-26, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk Allied ground losses: (all LCU elements of US 694 Field Arty Bn eliminated) Guns lost 29 (19 destroyed, 10 disabled) Vehicles lost 25 (21 destroyed, 4 disabled) Improved night sighting under 85% moonlight Maximum visibility in Overcast Conditions and 85% moonlight: 8,000 yards Range closes to 25,000 yards... It is also known US Main Carrier force has just been detected by Japanese air search during this game turn. My estimate at this point is the Namatanai amphibious operation is at best seriously compromised it not a complete bust. The focus of Allied strategy at this point in the Namatanai action could more profitably become elimination of most or all of KB. Going into the coming game turn, both Pillager and I each have what appears to be two primary options for our next moves with KB and the US Main Carrier force. In the case of KB
reported plane losses for this game turn indicate it has lost approximately 210 planes (180 bombers) in action against US escort carriers and amphibious TFs at Namatanai base hex along with a large portion of available air sorties on its carriers. From appearances, Pillager has two possible moves with KB next game turn (1) stay put, finish off the Namatanai invasion force and take his chances with US carriers, or (2) send KB home, making a clean get away after seriously disrupting the Namatanai operation and sinking more US CVEs.. My estimate is that Pillager prefers to preserve KB as a deterrent/fleet in being and performs option (2) above. If Pillager is playing for VP, option (2) is also more attractive as he currently holds the VP lead. For the US Main Carrier force, two likely movement options are available (1) turn the Carrier force south and go directly against KB, or (2) full-speed movement on roughly a due W heading into KBs projected path of withdrawal. Neither option for the US Carrier force guarantees preservation of US ships now at Namatanai, my best available option with the Namatanai invasion being to land the maximum possible amount of troops and supply and then take the ship losses. With that
the invasion fleet is a write off unless AE grants a small miracle. However, hunting down KB is becoming an attractive option. Southward movement of the US Main Carrier force towards Rabaul (Option 1) would likely find KB no longer in the sea area near Rabaul if Pillager is inclined to withdraw it ahead of my arrival. Westward movement of the US Carrier force at full speed (Option 2) would likely intercept KB during its withdrawal if Pillager takes that choice or trap KB inside a sea area between the US Carrier forces position, Rabaul and the northern coast of New Guinea if Pillager chooses to keep KB off Rabaul. If Im correctly guessing Pillagers withdrawal route, KB is returning to Babeldaob (its most likely forward replenishment base) via a movement path off the northern coast of New Guinea.
