Allright guys here is my million dollar question. This is got to be the most expensive game I have thought about buying. With no demo or anything to wet my lips I am debating back and forth. The last complicated game I purchased was Ageods Civil War Game. I have had for about a year and I am just now to apoint where I can understand and enjoy the game. Pacific War in WW2 has always held my interest so I want to like it. But at the price tag? It better rock. I have sorta skimmed over the threads and like any game, their are quirks. I understand that. But I guess what I am asking in along winded way is, is it worth it?

Next thing I know, I post some replacement art work, next thing I know I'm doing more.............. and then a couple of years later, I'm getting a phone call to participate in AE (in a very small way compared to the other contributors who are online and very busy answering many of the AE related questions and even some of the same ones I had about WITP). Yes, I consider myself very fortunate to even be considered to be a participant on such a massive project!!! In short (and 4277 posts later), "The best experience I've ever had in a wargame community that I could have ever imagined!!!!!!!!!" Could I have predicted this? No....not at all. I was just dead-set on finding a wargame that encompassed the entire pacific theater in as much detail/accuracy as I could find with a decent AI and then to be left alone.......(anal - yes I am). Are there some issues...sure, but with a game of this complexity, it's pretty much inherrent. But having a small inside window, the developers are very commited to making this the best game covering this genre as possible. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I'm sure others will gladly post their experiences and opinions about AE. TOMLABEL

cmdrsam, If you do a search you will find so many threads where people pop in and ask that question. I think the responses have been 99.999% yes versus 0.001% forgot to respond. Does that get the point across? [8D]

It is only worth it if you have the patience to learn and play the game for years. Your interest in the subject matter helps. Best Pacific War game in my opinion. It is not worth it if you want istant gratification. I have seen some people saying the game is a waste of time and money. Obviously the 99% who says the game is worth it are the ones who are sticking around and playing the game. I there is a % of people who dumped the game and is not visiting the WitP section.

Very, very valid points here with this post. It depends on the type of person you are and the time you have available to contribute to it(whether it be just playing the game or playing the game and participating in the forum). The guys on this forum are the greatest in my opinion. I've learned so much from these guys and have had plenty of laughs along the way. Sometimes things get tense, but you just have to take (a very limited) of those post as they come depending on your phyilosophy. All-in-all, it's the best decision I've made concerning a purchase. Real life has pulled me away lately, but it always is a pleasant experience when I have time to return to this fourm. TOMLABEL

Wow that didnt take long at all. Have to admit I didnt need much of a push. But overall what I have been reading it looks like it would be a game of my interest. Looks like I am going to have to open up my piggy bank this week and see what all the fuss is about. Graphics from what I have seen in the AAR reports look promising. And I am sure to get kicked in the teeth by the ai till I figure out what the heck I am doing. I appreciate the fast response gentlemen. Here is to happy gaming.

I own both AGEOD’s Civil War game and WitP AE. To be honest, they are worlds apart in complexity, AGEOD’s games are much simpler than WitP from a complexity point of view. On a scale of 1-10, I’d rate AACW as a 6 and WitP AE as a 10. A lot of that is due to the sheer scope of WitP though, if the game only covered a small theater like just Malaya or just the Philippines or something, I’d rate it as an 8. I love both games, but between the two I play far more WitP than I do all of my AGEOD games combined (I own 4 or 5 I think). It’s a massive commitment of your time to learn WitP and you’ll be spending far less money per hour played for WitP than you do for other games. You can also expect to play this game almost continually for decades if you find you enjoy it. The only real downside is micromanagement. Some people simply hate the level of detail a game like WitP has. But that is a subjective issue and no one here can tell you if this is a game for you or not except yourself in that respect. If you can deal with all the minutiae in game and if you love detailed wargames with lots of chrome, then this will be a dream game. If you hate micromanagement, then that may be enough to put you off the game. Jim

The game is not difficult. The sheer volume of information is daunting and a little scary if you are not used to it. But this should not be a detraction, as you will learn the game system and the map quickly. If a grand strategic level game ot a historical game are your enjoyments, it would be difficult to find a better game. If you divide the price of a game by the number of hours spent playing it, this is the cheapest game I've ever owned.

In short (and 4277 posts later), "The best experience I've ever had in a wargame community that I could have ever imagined!!!!!!!!!" Could I have predicted this? No....not at all. I was just dead-set on finding a wargame that encompassed the entire pacific theater in as much detail/accuracy as I could find with a decent AI and then to be left alone.......(anal - yes I am). Are there some issues...sure, but with a game of this complexity, it's pretty much inherrent. But having a small inside window, the developers are very commited to making this the best game covering this genre as possible. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I'm sure others will gladly post their experiences and opinions about AE. TOMLABEL The same thing happened to me, I swear!!!

Intimidating and like everything else gets easier as you do it. Since 2002 I've bought UV, WPO, WITP and AE and the only one that didn't really get much use was WPO as AE is starting to get more and more of my attention as a WITP PBEM grinds down. It's worth the investment as the time spent with it will justify it and the support it gets from the developers is unparalleled.

The game isn't for everyone. It's complex beyond what a lot of folks are expecting. The level of micromanagement is massive. You will see folks grip about aspects of the game (including myself) but we still play it and are just either letting off steam or are offering suggestions to Matrix. Matrix games has a stellar record with WITP and AE both with support of these games. Personally This is without doubt the most well spent money I have ever spent and worth more (cover you eyes matrix). No game is perfect and AE is not but it's very very good. Everyone has their favorite aspect of this game airpower is mine being ret AF that they tend to grip about. Take it with a grain of salt and understand the lions share if not all with their grips would recommend this game wholeheartedly. Nothing comes close to AE. The closest thing I know of on this topic would be like a game of domino's where AE is more like a grandmaster game of chess. One new game on the pacwar can be played and finished in less time than it takes to complete the first (and longest) turn of AE. Their are more destroyers in AE than all ships in it's nearest kin lets not even talk about aircraft and pilots. I highly recommend this game to anyone with a love of the topic if you can take the micromanagement and depth, it's more than worth the investment to learn.

My simple assessment. If you do not like to micro-manage your games, then you will find AE to be an over-complicated click-fest. If you like complete control over everything, then you will be in your element. It's too bad there isn't a demo, there really needs to be one so people can judge before spending the cash.

Yeah it's worth the money, but the game isn't for everyone. As a sidebar, having bought games in Australia from about 1992 onwards - I can't understand some of the comments about the price. I remember paying this kind of money for some really crappy titles back then(and a few good ones which still litter my parents study)... 5.25 & 3.5 floppies and an assortment of CD's - all of which are just expensive drinks coasters. I believe Australia still has some of the highest retail prices for electronic content even now... although the price hasn't really varied since then for mainstream titles... But luckily since I purchased WITP back in 2006 - I really haven't spent another cent (and IF I had found it before I would have saved a bit of dough). Actually come to think of it AE & WITP were really bad idea's from a company profit/revenue stream perspective. Now having helped create 2 Tracker programs, a bunch of tutorial video's, & undertaken 3 PBEM's + 2500 posts later - I'm still intrigued (obsessed)... nothing comes close (well NOT until witpII [;)])

I liked it so much I wrote a tool to help make the game more accessible and fun to play. It is a great game if you like complexity and want to explore the Pacific War. I play it to learn more about the history of this theater more than any other reason. Before WITP, I couldn't tell you where Guadalcanal and Wake were. I knew they were in the Pacific, but where they were, I had no idea. I now find myself reading all the books I can find and watching documentaries constantly on the subject. All thanks to WiTP, WiTP AE and this online community. Is it worth it? If you like history and this theater of war, you will not find a better $75 investment. just my two cents. Bret

AE is like $70. If you don't like it, you've blown 2 games worth of cash on it.

Any game you play for more than a year thats under $100 is a worthwhile investment. I can spend that much going out for a single night on the town with the GF unit.

I've been playing WITP and WITP:AE for about 3 years now, and I still consider myself a newbie. $75/$80 is nothing when compared to the fact that i've spent over 1000 hours on this game already. The best part about this game is that even after 3 years, i'm still learning, and there is always someone who comes up with something new, or has notice a new way of using a feature. Also, support fot this game, in forums or patches, is second to none.

It's a grognards micromanagement delight. If you like to place your paws on everything, this is the game for you, and you'll play it for years. Plus lots of free modded enhancements are available.[;)]

Ok, I'm confinced. Got to check to make sure bills are still paid on time and perhaps I'll purchase it this thursday. Thank to all who answered my question. I actually do like to controll everythign, and as I have mentioned I also like the period and the theater. Have a standing order for pizza to be delivered to your home. You will need to eat. Get a small fridge and stock it with soda {caffeine to help you stay away for 72hours}. Get a doctor's note for work saying you will be too ill to come in for about a week or six. Put said fridge in the bathroom and move your computer there as well. This will increase turn productivity by cutting out travel time during nature calls.

Rockmedic is correct. You'll need to call in sick for at least the first 10 days after you get AE. No question. By that time, you will have almost finished planning your first turn in a CG and will be ready for some time at work to read the manual to get more ideas about what else you need to do before you push the magic red arrow. Then, after another couple of days of work of thinking and reading, you'll need another week off to play the first week or so of the CG. Then two more days of work to rest up, then another week off. This most likely will continue until you have 500 posts here. ... ... Actually, I'm not kidding. [8\|]
