Under what conditions are you allowed to create LCVP's and LCM's?? Once created how are they used in the game???? I see no detailed information ANYWHERE, not even the manual! Does anyone know??? This is my second post on the subject.

motaman,

:) Section 9.20 (page 58) explaines how to create PT boats and barges. I recommend that you create them at your barge hub (section 9.20). There are a cheap way to transport supplies (on short runs) to isolated/small bases where a normal convoy is to risky or too big. They load/unload and start moving in one day. Its up to you if you think they are worth the effort. You might want to try a head to head game to just prctice using barges and see if they are worth the effort.

:) I hope this helps, if not feel free to ask more questions. And I'm sure someone on this forum will have a better answer.

Thanks Tanjman, but I've read the manual, and I understand the reasons for making PT boats and Barges.

The LC(I,M,VP) are landing craft for troops etc, that would be used to assault a beach, not deliver supplies. With that in mind, how are they used in the game?
How do I make them??

All I've done and herd about are transports unloading the troops directly at a beach or base hex. This is where the LC's should come into play. But I dont know how to use them. And even if i did, what advantage would they have since no combat ever actually occurs between ground forces and invading troops in the water (Like LC's blowing up from coastal batteries.)

To sum it all up, is there actually any use for LC's, for what reason were they included in the game, and if they are not just there to make the OOB look better, how do I use them??

I would really like an official detailed explination/defination for the uses of LC's in this game.
Thanks

nevermind, i've been told they have a stupid and boring use as the barges for the US. Thats really weak. I was hoping for them to be a part of invasions. That's dissapointing news.

I have some great ideas on how they would work and make an amphibious assault a lot more complicated than it's portrayed in the game. I shall make a post of it :D

XPav -> (7/25/2002 5:52:31 AM)

The US landing craft are "barges." You make them as described in the section on making barges.

Loading troops on them is actually a good thing. If you've noticed, the larger the transport, the longer it takes to unload. This is why many people say never use more than the 1500 capacity transports to unload, because it will take too long.

If you can get together enough of the small transports (and you need a bunch), their small capacity allows you to unload their entire load of troops/supplies very quickly.

The problems are their short range, and their small capacity means that if you need a whole pile of them to load an entire regiment into.

motaman -> (7/25/2002 5:56:53 AM)

But it's not possible to unload troops on a cargo ship onto LC's and then have them move to the beach?

Erik Rutins -> "Barges"... (7/25/2002 6:00:11 AM)

As XPav noted, while there are listed under "available barges" and created in the same way as the Japanese barges, they can serve a much different purpose. They are better armed and have the capacity to be put in transport TFs to create very fast-unloading invasion fleets (compared to APs / AKs).

Once I get them, I love using them for this purpose and don't consider them to be at all lame. :)

- Erik

motaman,

:confused: Do you mean the actual landing craft used during and amphibious assault? If so I believe they are modeled (Martix Staff, please correct me if I'm wrong) in the game. How else do the AP/AK off load onto beach? Only landing craft and LSTs could beach without (not always) damage. I believe that the LVTs, LCVPs & others small amphibious craft are transparent in the game during amphibious assaults. I guess Gary Grigsby et al could have included them (like carrier air groups), but I don't think its needed for a game at this level.

;) BTW You do get some LCIs & LSTs, which I find handy for troop rotation.

:D Though I wouldn't mind having some LCI(R)s to soften up a beach!

I agree. I use them in several different ways. One way is to include one transport that they can re-fuel from thereby extending their range. I also use them to ferry around units that have gotten scattered. Because of their low capacity they do not suck up the supplies from the base I am shuffling troops from.

Ooo, that's a good idea. One can use an LST as a mothership.

motaman -> (7/26/2002 1:52:47 AM)

Well that's too bad, I was hoping I'd be able to load them on transports and use them for invading a beach. But as you suggested Tanjman, it's happening, but i just can't see it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, and thanks for the few suggestions on how to use them.
