Canoerebel -> Weird Invasion Question (No Miller, please) (5/14/2010 1:01:47 PM)

Gents,

I have a real quandary that needs quick and expert opinion. Even as you read this I am working on my turn, so if you have any knowledge on the issue, please reply quickly.

An Allied invasion of Samarinda, a base just north of Balikpan, is underway. The base is held by a very small Japanese land unit that has no combat troops.

We are playing two-day turns. Two TFs with combat ships are heading to Samarinda from Manado (to the north). A third TF with engineers is heading to the beach from Makassar (to the south).

I thought all three TFs would arrive on the second day of the two-day turn, but apparently only the south transports carrying engineers made it. This TF, which is a transport (not an amphibious) TF made up of xAK and xAP, made it to the beach and landed most of a base force and EAB. So far so good. (Yes, it's weird to use a transport TF in an invasion, but I added them at the last moment when I realized the base was essentially undefended; they were originally heading to an Allied port).

The two amphibious TFs from the north didn't make it to the beach. They are one hex away at a non-base island hex that "guards" the approach to Samarinda.

See the attached map for the message for both TFs indicating that they can't unload. I'll also attach a map showing Samarinda and approaches to following post.

What I DON"T know is whether that message means they can't unload at the offshore island hex (that's fine, because I don't want to) or at Samarinda (that would be very bad).

So: (1) can amphibious ships target Samarinda and, if so, is there any limit on size (I've broken off some LSTs to see if they can make it without that message, but they get the same message); or (2) is Samarinda off limits (if so, how in the world did my transports make it to the beach?)

Here's the map of Samarinda and vicinity.

If I don't get any answers to this admittedly weird question (realizing that very few players have gotten this far to know one way or the other), I will "assume" for the sake of the game that I can invasde Samarinda.  If the game proves me wrong, I will probably lose the troops, because the KB will descend on this invasion TF in a day or two (I was counting on getting the troops ashore early on day one and taking the base since it is undefended).

However, memory tells me that Q-Ball DID invade Samarinda, so perhaps there's hope.

Okay, just confirmed that Q-Ball invaded Samarinda in March '43 in his game vs. Cuttlefish.  I think that's a definitive answer.

Samirinda was just invaded by ship in my game.  I'm in Jan '41, allied.

Chickenboy -> RE: Weird Invasion Question (No Miller, please) (5/14/2010 2:58:07 PM)

I invaded Samarinda with an Amphibious TF as the IJ in January 1942. It can be done.

Good luck!

Hey CR ! Just checked my map and you need to go up a navagable river to get to samarinda. On page 39 of the manual it says that only ships of tonnage 15,000 or less may do so. Hopethis helps. [:)]

There might be something wrong with that TF. The load is larger then the capacity.

Its all that booze and women in the holds for later. [:'(]

Those ships are in a hex that they can not unload at the moment. Once they get to the base they can unload, also make sure the ships can make it up the river like others have said.

I don't have the game open right now, but it looks like that hex SE of Samarinda is swamp terrain. IIRC Don Bowen said that Swamp hexes (and some others) can not be invaded.

Though IRL, Samarinda is up a river, I would imagine the game has you landing on the coast which is less than 50km from downtown Samarinda.

My worry, if I read correctly, is the game allowing a Transport TF to unload in an enemy port.
