Meanwhile, off the California coast, I-16 put four fish into the side of a naval auxiliary that was evidently loaded with ammunition. The AKE Mobile City exploded and sank within two minutes of being hit. The I-16 reported that the shock was so severe that several of the sub's crew members thought that she had been hit by a torpedo.

Here is a fuzzy picture of an ammo ship exploding at sea during world war 2. Imagine the force.

Also, on a related note, RO-66, which had been hit yesterday by an aerial bomb off Oahu, finally went down after her damaged pumps could not control the flooding. Chalk one up to the biplane Helldivers. I bet Traskott doesn't even know he sank her.

Turn 109 25 March, 1942

British carriers suddenly appeared SE of Manado. Haguro and Nachi eash took one torpedo hit. We will retire to Babaeldoab for emergency repairs.

Off Sydney, the I-7 sank the large freighter Cynthia Olson with four torpedoes.

Meanwhile, on the left coast of Australia, the I-10 put a fish into the freighter Islami off geraldton.

Turn 112 28 March, 1942

At Luganville the I-173 sank the loaded transport Malaita in a combined torpedo and gun attack. The transport succumbed after three torpedo hits and several artillery pieces were seen being blown overboard in the explosions.

Near Truk, the american submarine Permit attacked the small freighter Kajo Maru #2 on the surface. To the surprise of the American sub, the Kajo Maru's gun crews did a very good job of defending her. They hit the sub with their gun 4 times, forcing it to abandon the attack and submerge due to damage. Despite 8 4" gun hits, the Kajo Maru#2 will make port at Truk.

Turn 113 29 March, 1942

Several Allied freighters, travelling singly and without escort, ran into my sub screen about 250 miles SW of San Diego.
This triggered several attacks and gave ample opportunity for the subs to finish off damaged ships before help could arrive.

I-22 sank the large freighter Ewa with a total of 5 torpedo hits that occurred over 3 attacks.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 113 29 March, 1942 (8/22/2010 7:00:22 PM)

Meanwhile, the I-29 damaged two different freighters in separate attacks.

First, she put one fish into the AK Hurricane.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 113 29 March, 1942 (8/22/2010 7:01:16 PM)

Shortly thereafter, she put a fish into the side of the freighter Jefferson Myers.

Turn 114 30 March, 1942

120 miles SW of San Diego, the I-16 located the damaged AK Hurricane and put 3 fish into her, finishing her off before she could make port.

I would like to think that they freighter losses are starting to mount up and will affect his war effort.

Turn 115 31 March, 1942

In a rare occurrence, we had a sub on sub battle this turn.
Off the eastern Australian coast, Traskott's S-35 caught the I-124 surfaced at night, charging her batteries. The S-35 fired 4 torpedoes of which 1 hit.
Needless to say, the I-124 sank shortly thereafter with all hands.

Turn 116 01 April, 1942

300 miles NE of Hawaii, I-15 put a torpedo int the freighter Mahukona.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 116 01 April, 1942 (8/22/2010 10:01:09 PM)

At Sidate near Manado, ABDAFLOT turned up to harrass my ships offloading in a night surface action. None of the ships were sunk during the action although several were fatally damaged. Troop losses were only 13 casualties.

One of the freighters did manage to land a gun hit on the CL Java, which then collided with the CL Marblehead. Shortly after this, the allied task force broke off the action.

One transport sank during the night, and an allied submarine claimed a second. During the next day, two more ships were beached to save their supplies.

Turn 117 02 April, 1942

This turn, Traskott flew LRCAP from what I think was Palembang over Singapore. I know the cap did not fly from singapore as the airfield had 100% damage. It was a good move, and he shot down 26 Nells and 22 Betties. However, my sweep of 55 Nates at low altitude gave as good as they got. I lost 9 nates total but shot down 5 enemy fighters.

Meanwhile, I captured Manado this turn, so even ABDAFLOT couldn't save it.

A fellow forum member made them. You can find them here:

Turn 122 07 April, 1942

Things have been fairly quiet over the last few turns. However I did have this rare encounter. Even more rare, the Japanese sub missed with all 8 torpedoes. Must have been hair raising on both sides.

Turn 126 11 April, 1942

It's been quiet for the past few turns, but the quiet was shattered on this day with this attack on the carrier Hermes.
I-11 caught her transiting the strait at Denpasar and put one fish into her, wounding the old lady and forcing her to go dead in the water.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 126 11 April, 1942 (8/29/2010 9:35:39 PM)

After evading the single DD standing by the carrier, the I-11 completed her reload and returned to put three more torpedoes into the carrier.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 126 11 April, 1942 (8/29/2010 9:41:24 PM)

4 Torpedoes were too much for the carrier, and she slipped beneath the waves. This picture was taken by a long range reconnaisance plane that happened to be in the area.

I have no idea how Traskott will fare without the 12 Fulmars that were on this ship. It could cripple his war effort.

Fletcher -> RE: Turn 126 11 April, 1942 (8/29/2010 9:58:34 PM)

Seydlitz,
Congrats for the sinking of HMS HERMES !... I-11 C.O.must be honored !
Best wishes,
Ramón.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Turn 126 11 April, 1942 (8/29/2010 10:24:26 PM)

Thanks Ramon,

I think that hitting and sinking a carrier or even a battleship is one of the toughest tasks in the game for a sub. I was quite excited when it happened.

traskott -> RE: Turn 126 11 April, 1942 (6/15/2011 2:45:31 PM)

Well, well, I have finished of reading the AAR, and looks like splendid, very ilustrative.

Some notes:

a) Even with the butcher job of the japanese SS, at the time of the end of the game, I hadn't had supply shortages.
b) DD losses HURTs.
c) The only time I feel a bit depressed was when the two raiding CVs flee. That action is interesting because the CV Yorktown which took the torpedo DIDN'T turn back to P.H. but continue in formation with the fleet ( she has 15 major flooding, no more).
d) KB raid over W.C., although interesting, was ( I think ) a mistake: I was able to move all my assets all over the map knowing 100% where the KB was.
e) "Fortress Palembang" is a very good tactic for the allied, specially against cautious japanese players [;)]. At October 1942, Palembang was at allied hands with 120k supplies.
f) I HATE your SS [:D][:D][:D].
g) My SS warfare was crippled by your VERY good air asw effort. However, the random hits got by aircrafts is overrated: I lost 3/4 SS at 21 days just with random hits...

It's a pity I had to stop this game, but I'm enjoyed it VERY much ( the chinesse offensive!!; Bangkok at 46 miles !!, The hunt of the miniKB!! ). Seydlitz is an excelent player, better person, and have a very remarkable skills painting french tanks !!! [;)][;)]
