Lou -> Tank Shopping (11/27/2000 3:47:00 AM)

I just finished the Hurtgen forest game and I'm on my way to rescue the trapped unit. Over time, I have filled my tank platoon with Jumbo 76 Shermans. I really, really like these tanks. Good gun, nice armor, what's not to like? But, now I have the option to purchase the M4a3e8 HVSS (Easy 8). Same gun, thinner armor, but it is faster. I know that the Easy 8 was well liked by its crews because of its improved ride. How does this "smoother ride" effect its ability to avoid bogging down? A couple of times I've sweated out battles where several Jumbos were stuck way back from where I needed them. Big guns and thick armor don't help when they're not in the fight. Jumbo 76 or Easy 8? Any thoughts? Lou

Historically the Easy 8 was the best Sherman overall of the war. The tankers in Korea much preferred the E8 to the Pershing or any other tank of that period. The Jumbo is a little slower, does not pack quite the punch of the M4a3e8, but durable, very durable. Hard choice, Lou. Just toss a coin (and pray!) Give me thicker armor anytime when slugging it out with enemy tanks. A softer, faster ride isn't much use if a shot comes through you. I've had numerous bogged tanks, also, and now check every hex on my proposed movement route to discover the ground conditions.

Myself, I would take the Easy 8 over the Jombo 76 any day. Its faster, it may have the same gun but it has a better range finder and stability rating, more APCR ammo and it has smoke dischargers. Need I go on And as a rule I thumb I aways go with the fast units, how els you going to get all BVs Armour is nice REMF, but I take speed anyday

Drake, I may have to side with you on the speed issue. During the U2R rescue mission, I found myself practically pounding the keyboard and yelling "come on!" to those pokey jumbos. I now have a mixed platoon, mostly Easy 8s. I'll see how that works. How else can you be "firstest with the mostest" otherwise? Lou

Slayer -> (11/28/2000 7:44:00 AM)

I try to mix the two. In the Heroes of the Motherland campaign, I used T-34's to grab the objectives, but had KV-1's to move up and hold them, as I found them to shoot more accuratly and take hits better.
