Joe D. -> Kudos to PBS, for a change (5/27/2010 2:45:35 PM)

Did anyone else catch the latest "Secrets of the Dead" abt the Brit commandoes who worked w/the "wild men" of Borneo to rescue downed Allied fliers while shooting blow guns at the IJA?

It was a great story, esp. the candor concerning the Brit soldier's disdain for the Japanese treatment of POWs -- i.e., sometimes they would behead them -- as a rationale to encourage the natives to resume their head-hunting habits, just as long as those heads were all IJA soldiers!

According to carefully documented Brit stats, the IJA lost abt 1,000 soldiers; it soon began to fear the deadly stealth of the blow gun's poisoned darts more than the noisy rounds of the machine gun!
Can you image treking the jungles of Borneo having to fear what you don't hear.

The next two land combat shows re the development of artillery and land fortifications were also spot on; truly an enlightening evening.

Ditto, watched it too. Been a while since I've seen photos of krak des chevaliers, forgot how cool it looked.

And I'd forgotten what "murder holes" actually were; they were mentioned in "Saving Pvt Ryan," but I'm still not sure of the connection since storming a beach isn't the same as breaching a castle, and krak was maze-like.

I'd forgotten the reference in the movie, but I found this.

PBS as a whole has had some good novas, frontlines, etc. on recently.

This one has been out for awhile. Still a good one.

There is also on the European Air War done by American Experience..that's kinda propaganda..but the wartime film is worth viewing..some good coverage of a BV-138 flying boat for one.

A change from what?

Although I don't get PBS where I'm now, I'm pretty sure I already saw this documentary over a year ago unless a similar documentary was already produced.
