Javaslinger -> Status of criticisms on Three Moves Ahead Podcast? (6/4/2010 9:19:39 PM)

considering getting distant worlds. I just listened to the Three Moves Ahead podcast on Distant Worlds. I'm very very interested. But since there appear to have been a few patches since the podcast, I'm curious if progress has been made on their criticisms.

Some specific criticism included fleet management and fuel issue by the AI and Escorts of freighters...

Thanks,

Ken

Maybe you can give us highlights of the podcast since, we all haven't heard it or want to hear it? Then, we'll help you out.

I haven't heard the podcast.  I'm a new player, had the game less than a week.  If you can look past the screenshots which in my opinion sort of make the game look ugly, even though it's not when you get it running, (graphics aren't great, but they are good enough that they don't detract from the game at all) and set some time aside to get into the game it's a really good experience.

I have had 2 crashes, but each time the Save Game option was still available after the crash oddly, so I have not ever lost any of my game time, apart from that I haven't noticed any major bugs (or minor ones actually [:D]), but I don't read other peoples bug reports for games because if I do I might notice them!

I highly recommend this game and to be honest I think because it doesn't have stunning 3D visuals or brilliant sound and generally is like something out of the early to mid 90s it might not get raving reviews, but thats the reason I don't read reviews anymore and just go on forums instead, you will notice this is generally a very positive forum, thats because its generally a very good game!  Try it.

Sidenote: the developers actually listen and communicate with the community, which is one of the most important things to me and most game developers don't do it [:-]

The fuel and escort issues, I think fuel issues were mainly fixed in a patch (e.g. colony ship won't go home to refuel it will just go to planet and colonize now).  Escorts still need a bit of work, for example if you escort a construction ship when the ship finishes what its building the escort ends too and you have to re-assign it, a bit annoying, but I think might be fixed in future... hopefully [8D]

That's a link to the Three Moves Ahead podcast.  I just discovered it today myself reading some of the reviews of Distant Worlds.  It's an entertaining and in depth roundtable style podcast.

Thanks,

Ken

I haven't heard the critisims, but if the review was over the release version versus the current version, then the fleet and fuel management and automation has been vastly improved.

I second that statement Shark7. Also, the soon to be released 1.0.5 patch is supposed to add a lot for fleet management.

The guys at Three Moves Ahead were very favourable about the game even in the early podcast. That podcast was the straw that broke the camels back for me and prompted me to buy the game. I think they did a very good job of explaining the openness of the system. It seems that a few of them have been smitten because they keep mentioning the game in many of the podcasts since that one.

Tom Chick, the guy who runs the quarter to three podcasts, and the guy who had the problems with fleet management, reported on this webpage that it no longer has such problems:
