Hi all!

I'm playing my first game with all automation settings set to off (except ship design) and have a couple of questions, sorry if the answers are obvious to you, I'm still quite new.

1. When playing automated my advisors would advise Attacks of Oppurtunity, how do I tell my ships to do this when not using automation? Also, the Boskara are attacking my ships to the point they are disabled but not killing them, how do I do this?

2. What happens if you colonize a planet in a system owned by another Empire? Who owns the system and can you ask the other Empire to give up their colony there?

3. How many troops is it wise to keep on your planets?

Eh, I'll answer question 2.

You both share control. They will get pissed off at you unless someone gives up their colony. You can negotiate this in negotiations (diplomacy screen).

1. Manually I think. You need to be in the system and attack ships. This doesn't automatically lead to a state of war but in most cases it will.

2. Both players can share systems but I think it is only the weaker the player that can negotiate to sell their planet. If you colonise a planet in an established system, you won't have options to buy the AI planets, only to sell yours (I think). If you do colonise an established system there is very strong likelihood that your planet will eventually rebel and switch sides.

3. It depends on the planet. In reality, you really need to chose which planets are important. I always try to have one troop of standard planets, two on important planets, and 8+ on the critical planets. The critical planets for me are the ones producing bazillions of $$$ which you can gauge in the Colony list (usually only one or two), and the game-changing planets with the Korabbian Spice etc. I also try to keep a full fleet of 5 or so troop carriers hovering near the critical systems to top up any major invasion and to be used when I need to take critical systems of the enemy.

Actually on #2: Its who ever has the most populated planet in the system. I was by far the larger of 2 empires in this situation once, but was only given the option of giving up my own planet to the AI (oddly enough I was there first and had a starport and defense base already built). My planet had a smaller population. And of course it rebelled and joined the Johnny come Lately who I promptly declared war on and took my planet back plus his. [;)]

serves them right! good info though, so the moral of the story is have more pop and the other guy's planets should rebel in a contested system.

1. Automation, beside full automation and turn it off, there is an 3.option. the AI advisior allways ask you what he want to do. Thats a good way to see what he would do.

2. I dont think it depend on the max population, i think it depend who comes first. But you allways can check that at the star map. The colour of the ring around the system representate the colour of the Empire. Is the ring a full ring he 100% own that system. Is the ring seperated he share it with some other empire.
AI Empire will never trade Colonies/Station from system they own.
When you colonies a planet at another Empire system it can go worse with your colony. Depend on your Empire race,goverment,reputation the population can be very unhappy, they will start to revolt and join the other empire shortly. The best way is after these planet start to revolt, start a trade with the other empire, and trade these colony against so much things you can get. Mosttimes you can get 1-2 techs or some cash, the bad thing is the other empire get your race bonus too.

3. protect your Main colonies very good (5-20 troops). Colonies with rare resources you should protect too.

2. Did you miss that I was there first in my case? That doesn't seem to be the deciding factor.
