The early-war mechanism for the canted tubes (not the later "roll-over" type) used a black powder charge to propel the fish forward and out. Made a nice, bright flash at night beloved by all the crews. Anyway, there was a designated (junior) crewman stationed at each tube with a wooden mallet in case of black powder misfire. You've gotta love the draft era . . .
