LEBILLAN -> Altitude of air units (7/30/2002 4:30:35 AM)

I will begin my first campaign and I try to understand what are the best altitudes for the airplanes (fighters, escort, CAP, ASW...).
:) Thank you, happy to see the grognards are ready to help the "bleus bites" (french greens).

Welcome aboard!

Until you get a feel for the game, just set your ASW planes to 1000ft, LRB (Long Range Bombers) to anywhere from 6000 to 20,000 ft (you WILL notice a big difference in bombs on target), and fighters at 10,000. That should get you started!

You will find this community VERY helpful (I'm a newb too).
For my 2 cents, if you are the US player your Land based Level bombers (b17s, mauraders, mitchels, hudsons etc.) are only really dangerous if you set their altitude at 1000 ft (they score many more bomb hits). Problem is, at 1000ft, any flak is going to be lethal.

I leave all my fighters at 10000, since some fighters incur penalties to their effectiveness being higher than this. The two allied planes that should be higher are the p-38 (usually set it to about 12 000 where the zeros just can't compete with them) and the corsair (11000).

Marine -> US Dive Bombers (8/10/2002 7:06:52 AM)

I found that if you put the US Dive bombers at 15000 ft they attack in waves of 9 aircraft, and score twice the hits. Haven't tried this yet with the Jap Vals, but am going to.

there a different approaches to select aircraft altitude.
For CV TF Cap defence purposes you can make several layers of CAP, say one CV has Cap on 12.000 feet, one on 14.000 and one on 16.000. Works quite good. (as in reality did) - lots of bouncing.
You even shouldnīt refrain so much from setting your P-39ers high... of course the loss performace slightly, but altitude is pilots best friend (in fact many German aces of EF got more than 75% of their kills only from bouncing). THis often results in your fighters having the intitative... doesnīt mean that you canīt loose but gives the enemy squad initial disruption, as the escorts of the bombers stay close to the altitude of the bombers they escort, so they are tied to them and are completely in disadvantege when 40 US fighters come diving from above and make a hit and run (or boom and zoom) tactic. (pahh! I shouldnīt tell those US players how to beat my lovely IJN).
Concerning bomber altitude...ö. depends on what you want! Japanese bombers get shot to peaces when you set plane alt too low. (allays take care off your veteran/elite Jap pilots... they are unreplaceable... donīt waste them!!!!!! - no needless PM missions!!!! such long range flying to a heavily defended target is hell) - US have proximity fuse FlaK shells -------> WATCH OUT Betty.
US learn by fighting, they can sustain losses until they arenīt gettin excessiv. SO set from 3000 (lightly defended targets) to 12.000 or a bit more. In some occasions you also might try high level B-17/B-24 stirkes.... they can draw jap fighters up, slaughter them and still do some damage to AF/port.

ltoot -> AC Altitudes (8/16/2002 6:52:26 PM)

Keep the heavies (B-24s, B-17s) above 10,000 to take advantage of the Norden bombsights. B-25s especially the J's are effective at 100 feet for skip-bombing and straffing. By mixing strike altitudes and types it spreads the enemy CAP.

I'm setting Dive Bombers to 15.000 ft and they score much more hits...probably they get full advantage of dive bombing? (I learned this from another GG's game - 12 o'clock high)

CAP altittude is set in layers from 14.000 to 18.000 ft

Level bombers attacks from 5.000 - 12.000 ft

ASW - 1.000 ft

Naval search - 2.000 - 5.000

Sweeps - +20.000 ft

works fine...yet

would set naval search higher. They spot more from higher alts: 10k -15k, but depends on situation.

For ASW most say 1000. THis has the advantege of more success upon attacking , but spots far less. Itīs very hard to effectively see much see space from that low alt. So I set my ASW in layers from 1000-6000. They spot more at higher alts and thatīs also good. YOu can move TFs around known sub posits.
Moeover divebombers should make use of their diving advantege - setting DBs on ASW below 8000 is not efficient.

So when youīve got the pssibility, do both. For very short ranged aircraft you want to be effective on ASW - set them naval attack or naval search with 100% commitment. (planes like F1M2 or even the Seagull). Sweeps 12k - 20k - depends on experience of the sqd and plane type. Escorts, depending on bombers escorted. When several bomber units attacking , keep their alt together somewhat (Vals-15000, Kate - 10000/12000, and Zeros either as close or as high escort.... close escorts better in defending bombers but in disadvantege to enemy fighters.

CAP in layers when you can afford - higher is good, but not allways best. When fighters meet enemy at same alt - the fighting is often more bloody for both sides - depends on what you want. Bouncing combat is less bloody in general and puts the initially higher side into a certain advantege.....though donīt try to outclimb a 109!! ;)
