jjdenver -> Questions about Guadalcanal 1 scenario (6/18/2010 5:47:16 PM)

Hi,

Why can CV's strike Henderson field from the Sealark sea area but not from Ironbottom sound? The latter appears closer to Henderson field so it doesn't seem logical.

Thx

Another Guadalcanal question.

I played through Guadalcanal A. I was only able to bomb Henderson field from the sea zone east of Ironbottom Sound. That didn't seem right.

Then I sailed my fleet 2 zones west and parked it. In the farthest seazone on the NW corner of the map, I spotted a Japanese CV fleet, apparently with troops loaded on transports. For the next roughly 12 or 15 turns I bombed the Japanese fleet from the adjacent sea zone every single turn until I'd sunk all or most of it - at least I think it was sunk. Why would the AI just sit there the whole game - not even striking back at my fleet with his CV's or sailing in for a surface battle?

Also ashore there were 2 Japanese units - one on Henderson Field, one 2 or 3 hexes west. In the first few turns I killed them. Then i spent the rest of the scenario fanning out across the entire island without ever encountering a single other Japanese unit. None.

I was awarded a victory.

This scenario seems really badly done. Why?

Thx

In couple of my games, AI was always able to put reinforcements to the battle.

I'll take a look at the issue.

I'm able to do that without any problems.

Could you please post a screenshot?

I noticed the same thing as well as the stationary Japanese fleet and no Japanese except for the 2 you mention on the island. In sum, none of the japanese units ever moved.

Same for me - even so I couldn't capture the whole island! Did learn there needs to be a port nearby for an invasion - is this the case in the full scenario?

henri51 -> RE: Questions about Guadalcanal 1 scenario (6/19/2010 4:11:46 PM)

I don't think a port is required for an invasion as well as enough invasion points, but if you don't capture a port soon you will be short of supplies. In the meantime you get SOME supplies from fleets and you can build a Mulberry harbor. But you are not going to support a large invasion force without a port, and you could end up with a large whale flopping helplessly on the coast - and you can't rembark without a port.

Bottom line: never invade when there is not a port nearby.

henri51 just described overall invasion strategy very good.

You're right. I just restarted the scenario, moved the Saratoga to Ironbottom sound, and was able to strike Henderson Field. I have no idea why I couldn't earlier. I must have been doing something wrong?

Thanks

ZetaRho62 -> RE: Questions about Guadalcanal 1 scenario (6/20/2010 7:39:11 PM)

I just had similar problems with the AI and fleet bombardment.  I just played the Guam scenario first as the defending japanese and during this scenario (40 turns) the AI stopped at turn 28 at the midpoint of the island and did not press forward - just stopped.  I was on the ropes but because the Americans just stopped I was able to buy new units over and over and just fortified the line where they stopped.  The AI shuffled units around but never attacked.

Also when I played as the Americans, I was able to use shore bombardment early in the game.  In later turns (without moving the naval forces to another sea zone) I tried to use bombardment with a BB group on two japanese units I sealed up in Asan (adjacent sea hex) but the button was greyed out and said no targets were available.  I tried to use a CV strike but it was also greyed out saying no targets were within range, however, the recon button was available and when I clicked that one, I was clearly within range of all, if not most, of the island.  How can my recon planes be in range but not my strike aircraft form the Apra Harbour sea zone which is adjacent to Asan?

Did I miss something, and yes I did read the manual and am going over it again but I can't seem to see where I might be wrong - as far as the bombardment/air strike part of my post.
