I had a bit of machine trouble and had to pull a format so I reinstalled DW and, well, no music, sound is all right and I do have the files in the folder its just not playing them. Given the situation I think I am missing some driver or some such. Has this happened before? and can somebody point me in the right direction?

You are probably missing the most recent version of Media Player. Distant Worlds needs Media Player 11 to play music, I think. This is an upgrade for most Windows versions except the most recent.
