scott64 -> New HD (7/5/2010 11:00:30 PM)

My one year old new 500GB HD died the other day. Had a tech person look it over and I decided to install a new one for about $180. Got it home and installed the OS. Now my computer crawls along like a snail. [:@] Can't run an AE turn with out seeing the same animation for 5 minutes. Looking around I see my OS is install on the I drive. [X(] I do have a C drive but that is 127 GB former slave, before it was my I drive. I have reinstalled my sound, my display drivers, except my ATI Catalyst Control fails at the very end of installation for some reason or another. I am running out of things to look into as to why my computer is super slow. I do have 2 GB of memory. [:(][&:] Any suggestions?

Is it IDE or SATA?

Windows loves the C drive. The installations are probably failing because they are hard coded to look for windows on C. My solution may not be the fastest but I would reconfigure the drives so that the larger (if that is what you want) is the C (first HD). I would then reinstall windows and such. I had this happen when I got a larger sata drive, I had two, and it was a pain (I had the same issue with the ATI install, it is hard coded for C).

I tend to do things rather clinky but that is what I would do, rearrange the drives, double check them in bios and reinstall windows on the "new" c drive (checking the drive sizes before I committed to make sure I had the right one). This way, IMHO, windows "knows" it is on C and all will bw configured correctly. If you leave it as I you may run into other install issues as almost everything looks for windows to be on C

SATA. I updated my display driver and loaded my Monitor drivers, runs a little better. I can at least get through an AE turn.

Either it's on the wrong connector, or it's not selected as primary in BIOS. Or did you buy an usb external one? :P
If you change your system HDD, this is one of the cases where you need to do a fresh format and reinstall of everything. (well, sometimes system drive copied to external hdd will work, sometimes)

If your tech support person works for any retailer, don't trust him 100% get a second opinion. What kind of HDD did you get for 180 bucks anyways?
