Cascade -> A few before buying ???? (7/13/2010 10:32:38 AM)

Hi fan's of Distant World's,

This seems like a very interesting game here, but I have a few start questions before I buy;

Are there settings that adjust the level of strength your oponents have in single play, easy to tuffer openents ?

Can you start with a bigger amount of resources and planets and maybe also adjust resource amounts ? I read there is an editor involved, would I need that to make this happen ?

How much of the game is a multi player ? is it just a sandbox with combat and then also an on line with how many multi player slots ?

Is there any challenge scenario mode or campaign alike feature in single play ?

and last;

does it have just the F1 explanation and manuals with it or does it have a tutorial to play also and how is that feature if it is there, was it very thourough ?

All of that should get me and my own a very quick start to a long time playing this game it seems, wouldn't you think ?

You can choose how large and technologically advanced each AI Empire is individually, also how good their home-system is. You can also choose overall agression of galaxy.

Just like your opponent you can choose the size of your Empire at the start to begin with more planets (and more resource mining locations). Overall amount of planets can be adjusted by Galaxy size at the start, there is no resource abundance slider as such at the moment (I did add it to the wishlist in the forums though). [;)]

There is no multiplayer. On single player you can play sandbox mode or with adjustable victory conditions.

No, its one big long game. But of course lots of options at start up so you can have a fair bit of variety.

There are a couple of Tutorials, while not brilliant they were good enough to get me on my way [;)]

Hi Cascade, welcome to the forum!

Yes you can set up each empire at the start of every game. You can have up to 19 opponents. You can alter their name, race, size, technology level, distance from your empire.

At the game set  up screens, you can also adjust the number of stars from 100 to 1400 stars. With several planets and moons in each star system, that's alot of potential resources. You can also edit things with the in-game editor. This would take alot of time to alter everything in the galaxy though.

There is no multiplayer in DW. Sorry.

There is a back story. You learn about the history of the galaxy. I think it's great, but after a couple of play throughs, it tends to become irrelevant. There are one or two advantages to following the galactic history, but if you like you can just ignore it.

There is a tutorial, but I wouldn't say it was particularly thorough. I found the best way to learn the game was to start as an old empire with lots of smaller, less advanced empires around me. It makes the game pretty easy, but you can see how the automation works and get a good understanding of the game without much pressure.

I hope that allays any fears you may have had about buying. This game is a real gem and is still improving.

Happy gameing.[:)]

Aswell as the tutorials and Galactipedia you can also set the AI to 'suggest' on many aspects of the game.  I did this when I first started playing to get an idea of what I should be doing, what ships I should be building, how to expand etc.  On my second play through I found myself disagreeing with the suggestions and slowly started turning them off.  They aren't complete rubish but are a bit 1 size fits all and I felt I knew how to do things better in my circumstances but this showed me it was a great way to learn.

Thanks guys,

That's enough answers to know what I needed I think. Although I did see I had though it was on line game as well, just the same, I had most planned to keep it in single play mode any way. It's very interesting to read about, I definatley will oredr it in the next week some time so you'll likely see me back on the forum to talk and post reply's along with other's here,

[&o] Thanks,

Cascade

Welcome. Good to hear that you'll be trying it.
Note that the devs are continuing to improve the game. In fact, they will update the manual and galactopedia with the implemented changes (which are quite numerous!).

Wrong, there are specific scenarios inside that you can play along with the sandbox main mode. There is no campaign though.

WoodMan -> RE: A few before buying ???? (7/14/2010 6:26:35 PM)

Well by Scenario I thought he meant in the computer game sense, like in Civ games you can play the long open game or play a WW2 scenario for example.

the1sean -> RE: A few before buying ???? (7/14/2010 10:00:39 PM)

I would say that the game has scenarios, and a campaign of sorts, in that every game reveals the game's backstory. However no true campaign of maps building in difficulty...
