Scott_WAR -> World of Tanks- Account (7/13/2010 3:01:08 PM)

Free to play MMO being released by wargaming.net,....the makers of M.A.N 2.

http://www.worldoftanks.com/

For those that played world war 2 online when it was released and everyone was running around in tanks (Quank),....this is similiar. Not as hardcore on the sim side,....no open world, but a 15 vs 15 player map with each side having a base. Victory is achieved by either taking the enemies base, or by destroying all tanks and artillery on the other side. Maps are not huge, but not small. They are actually about perfect so far.
Game is in closed beta now, but there are keys being given away all over the place,...just do a search.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: World of Tanks (7/13/2010 7:30:26 PM)

Sounds like what WWIIOL devolved into anyways. Might even be more fun for the quankers.

Scott_WAR -> RE: World of Tanks (7/13/2010 7:39:28 PM)

Its pretty addictive. 'Just one more time.......then I'll go to bed" untill 3 am kind of addictive.

Edit-Account taken.

jomni -> RE: World of Tanks (7/19/2010 1:46:05 AM)

The MMOs that are "free-to-play" are free, yes. However there are always lots of goodies and content that you need to unlock via paying microtransactions. Some have limitations on how far you can advance or some such.

It may sound scary but the ones you can play totally for free (and all the way through) really don't require anything from you. Just keep in mind that you'll generally not be top dog and will likely be at a disadvantage versus someone who's bought extras.

These types of games with monthly memberships are a rip off.

not true....It depends on the type of monthly membership i.e. what you get and how much it costs.....

I'm curious what you guys mean by "these types of games". Do you mean ALL pay-to-play games including MMORPGs and the like? If so, I don't agree. Well unless you consistently buy a lot of games. When I was into WoW, DAoC, and EQ, I actually saved money because I didn't purchase other games out there. Normally, I'd usually play and burn through a game a month, which was around 50 bucks. In comparison, I was only paying $14.99 a month for the lifesucker I was into at the time.

But then you may be talking about something completely different.

Scott_WAR -> RE: World of Tanks (7/19/2010 6:45:49 PM)

The game is in closed beta, so there are things not in the game yet, but the way they plan to make money is already in,.......at least partially.
In game things are bought with credits,.....new, better technology is researched using experience. After each battle you will gain both. When you have enough experience you can research new guns, engines, tracks, turrets, radios and even other more powerful tanks. Upgrading to the new equipment costs credits.

The game also has gold, which is what people will be able to buy for the 'extras'.

Right now the different uses for gold are---

--Buying a 'premium account' which earns a lot more credits and experience in each battle. You can buy 24 hour, 1 week, or 1 month premium accounts.
-- Buying certain tanks which are only purchasable with gold (These tanks are better than equivilent regular tanks before they are upraded. These tanks are not upgradable. Equivilent regular tanks that have been upgraded are better than these).
-- Transfering exp from one tank to another (Exp gained in a tank is only spendable on that tanks upgrades. This allows you to play in one tank and use the exp gained to do research for another tank)
-- Buying improved ammo. The ammo is a little better, but not good enough that it really alters the game.
-- Exchanging for credits. You get 400 credits for each gold you exchange.

Right now they give you 150 gold per day if you play that day. I am sure thats just for beta. The best use for gold currently is a premium account for the extra experience and credits.

Most free to play MMO's, as in no monthly fee but 'extras' you can buy, usually end up costing people a lot more than MMO's that cost $14.99 a month,.... if they are too weak to avoid buying 'extras'.

Poolmick -> RE: World of Tanks (7/20/2010 3:27:18 AM)

I signed up . waiting to see if I get accepted.

I play some hockey and football sims that you can accent with real money. I dont but I am not a power gamer.

I dont mind with some of these games developed with free/pay after all the work I would like some coin in my pocket.

As long as the pay guys dont have a huge advantage. then there should be seperate worlds.

giorgio -> RE: World of Tanks (7/20/2010 5:38:06 PM)

Joined beta a couple of days ago (my poor weekend) and I'm already driving Tier 3 Grille SPG. It's a bit about grinding when you want to get this or that tank quickly, but it's ok with me.

PS. I grabbed my my key here and looks like they still got a bunch of spare ones - http://www.mmoabc.com/giveaway/world-tanks-closed-beta-key-giveaway.
