gainiac -> LONG CAMPAIGN question....... (8/4/2002 11:06:31 AM)

Hello,

If you start as the US ARMY in 12/41 fighting in the Pacific can you transfer over to North Africa when 11/42 rolls around just in time to star fightin' the Jerries?

Just wonderin'.................

I figure warmin' up in the Pacific is a good way to get your troops battle ready to face the Jerries in N Afrika,,,,,,,,,,,,,

KG Erwin -> Random choices... (8/4/2002 11:48:14 AM)

...are given to you in the long campaign. I played one as the USMC starting in August 1942, and went from Tenaru River/Bloody Ridge/ Buna/various Pacific Islands/Iwo Jima/end. The battlefields you are given are pretty random and generic in the long campaigns. You develop a kick-butt Combat Group or Kampfgruppe , go through 12 or so battles, and at the end you get the message: the war is over. That's all. THAT is what the long campaign is. Talk about Kampfus Interruptus. At the end of the USMC campaign, I was ready to invade Japan, but I was NOT given the chance to do so.

Erm, well, I always thought the war would last until it was over.

It's only 1/42 in my Long WWII Campaign...

I'm still in North Africa fighting the Brits, as I don't wanna fight the Russians at the moment, I don't have anything that can stop their KV tanks besides stationary 88s really.

Doing good so far in my campaign, but I do know you can't change the end of the war, or I'm pretty sure you can't, as time goes allong you just have stuff happen, whether you win/lose fights is kinda just to see if you could win/lose the campaign, not change history.

But if you're right, I only have two or three more fights left...and that makes me sad. I'm getting to know my KampfGruppe so well...

KG Erwin -> I understated the number of battles... (8/5/2002 1:19:55 AM)

Actually you get closer to 20, not 12 as I previously stated. Remember, this was from August 42 to April 45. If you're the Germans, starting in Sept 39, I imagine the total number of battles would be somewhat higher. I've started several of those 9/39 campaigns, and by my 4th or 5th battle I'm already facing the Russkies in June or July 41. I haven't gotten any further than that, since I usually draw an "assault" mission and the T-34s are already crawling all over the map. Ever see "Starship Troopers"? Well, that's how it seemed to my poor Kampfgruppe. Campaign over. :eek:

G_X -> (8/5/2002 6:36:08 AM)

I started in early 41...and so far I've gone through 9 or 10 battles, and gone only 1 month at a time or so.

I hope it keeps this trend, I'm hoping my Kampfgruppe will have some more Elite Panzers by the time I get to fight on the Western Front against the Amis.

Greetings...

In either the long campaign or the WW2 Campaign, you can choose how many battles you fight. Personally I like the Long campaign. Starting as Germans in Apr 1936 to Sep 1946 50 battles. 6 air formations per side, 20K points per side. Max formations.

Speaking of Long Campaign, I do a lot of Juggling over the years with my formations and almost always end up with something like this:

A Formation: Kamfgroup GHQ turned into some kind of tank usually Panther Uhu carrying a FO, 5 other heavy tanks, usually Konigtigers or Maus.

3 formations of Deep penetration Recce consisting of 3 pumas, FO's and Pzbush AT teams.

3 formations of Upgunned PzGrd all riding Halftracks with an assortment of captured American and russian equipment such as Sherman flails crabs, OT-34's etc... A couple of Sturm tigers or Brumbars, loads of AT guns and trucks.

1 Huge company of dirt cheap cannon fodder recon teams spiced with pzfst teams and snipers.

A mass of artillary and AA.

1 small company of panthers with ft engineers riding.

A Glider platoon filled with FJ Infantry and small AT teams to land behind enemy lines during every scenario.

I wish the campaign battles could use long (size 10) maps from top to bottom, as I like Recce battles preluding a clash of armor.

Edit the save file in the editor, you can add whatever map you want!!:D

G_X -> (8/8/2002 2:52:12 AM)

His problem is the same I have...

You end up usually having to use a 100x240 map with the 240 being the length (Going down) So you have a very wide front, with your forces spread out.

I'd prefer a 240x100 map.

That way I have a map that's 12 klm long by 5 klm wide.

Warhorse -> (8/8/2002 6:21:45 AM)

Ahh, I copy!!

G_X -> (8/8/2002 1:07:32 PM)

I know there are ways to do this (There are 50x60 plain maps in the storage bin) But I don't know how.

I'd actually like a 15km x 3km area to represent a long, narrow pass through mountains.

That's 300 x 60

Is there any way to do this? Seeing as the game normally A.) Doesn't allow that size map. B.) It would be 300 wide, not 300 long.

So, is there any way?

Warhorse -> (8/8/2002 6:41:19 PM)

No, the maximum size allowed, even with the mapeditor from Chlanda, is 240X100, bummer, huh?

G_X -> (8/9/2002 10:06:55 AM)

Yeh, but that'd still be big enough (15km, something like 6 miles, I can't do that conversion well) Would take a unit moving 9 miles an hour, something like 25-30 turns to move across.

Bleah, I didn't realize how big that was.

Do I need to use Chlanda's editor to get the map shapes I want?

Warhorse -> (8/9/2002 6:42:58 PM)

You would need to yes, for any maps not available through the normal build routine, ie clicking on custom and setting it that way. 100 is the widest you can get, due to programming limits, but up to, and smaller than 240 hexes long you can do with either the in game map editor, or use Chlanda map editor for cusom smaller, or less wider maps.

G_X -> (8/10/2002 1:21:01 AM)

Bleah, I just realized something as well, with skillfull illusionary work, one could make the 100x240 maps work lengthwise, it just takes careful planning of the start line, but it could be done.

Thanks Warhorse, I now have a slightly better understanding of what's going on, I think I'll stick to the maps available through the normal build routine for the moment.
