Howdy.

I have been reading here for a long time, but I thought I'd finally join the discusions. I love this game and find that I can live with the little problems. I really enjoyed reading dgaad(sp?) thoughts on the B-17s. I learned alot.

Now:

While playing scenario 17, the Yorktown and Lady Lex were both hit. The airgroups from the Yorktown found refuge at port moresby along with the Lexington's groups. The Yorktown went back to pearl without her airgroups. The Lady Lex avoided the Japanese subs and docked at Brisbane.

Along the way, the Lexington picked up new F4F-4s without pilots, though I couldn't tranfer any of her groups back while she was at sea. How did the 4s get there?

I later placed three of Yorktown's squads, vf-42, vb-5 and vs-5 aboard the Long Island to transport then to Luganville. Somewhere along the way, I think near Noumea, they flew to pearl harbour. Kind of a long flight I'd imagine. I looked at the Yorktown docked in pearl, and sure enough there they are.

However, now that the Lexington has upgraded to F4F-4s, the highly experienced fighter group will not go back aboard thanks thier use of F4F-3s. How do I get the squadron back together?

By the way, the Japanese lost the Zuikaku(sp?) during the fight.

Try transferring the squadrons with F4F-3's to within range of Noumea (using the Long Island if nothing else) so that they can upgrade. I believe that they have to be in range of Noumea to upgrade and that Brisbane isn't a place they can upgrade from. Then once they are F4F-4's, transfer them back to Australia and they should be able to merge with their cohorts on the Lexington.

I assume this is another occurance of a known (I hope so, at least it's been reported more than once) bug. The F4F-4s aboard the Lexington are an upgrade of the reserve planes. They couldn't divert right after the battle, stayed aboard and received a *full* squad of planes as upgrade. I'd suggest to transfer the upgraded squad to any base where it can be disbanded (merged into another squad of F4F-4s) or withdrawn. Then it will be possible to put the F4F-3s back aboard and they will get upgraded soon.

Two more remarks on upgrading in general, based on what I've noticed.
First, squads within maximum range of the new a/c type from either Noumea or Brisbane are eligible.
OTOH, squads waiting at these two bases seem to be the latest to actually receive their upgrades.

I guess I should have waited, maybe. I moved both the Lex and the F4F-3s to Noumea. The squad did not upgrade, so no merger there. However, the Hornet arrived with 57 fighter pilots. I sent both the Lex and Hornet to sea for an emergency engagement. The Hornet happend to share her pilots with the Lexington. I now have a very expert wildcat squad to base somewhere. The computer does not seem to want them on the Lexington anymore, it is happy with newly staffed F4F-4s.
I checked the Enterprise, and she too has 50+ fighter pilots. Some of my P-39 squads have many many pilots also, yet my PBY groups are extremely undermanned. I guess I am experiencing the pilot bug. Oh well.

Everyone's insights to the game are really helping. I look forward to hearing more.
