72ndarmor -> ab units crossing the rhine (7/22/2010 4:36:29 PM)

this question is for the developers or anybody who might understand. Playing as the allies on the arnhem railbridge the germans blew the bridge and the battle ended, no biggie. on the the strat map it shows the bridge blown, HOWEVER.....i can still move the brit 1st ab across the the river too the eldon map[&:][&:] was this normal. i cant believe 40 or so men are going to swim the rhine with full kit and ammo and attack the southern bridgehead. i can see ab units crossing a small canal and still be combat effective but not the rhine[:-] also on the southern maps after the bridges are repaired i never see any bailey`s or pontoon bridges. i remember in cc2 there was a pontoon bridge appeared after the son bridge was blown(i think) I hope everyone understands what I`m talking about. the railbridge/elden is areal gamebreaker for me, but maybe some one can explain. the tank pathing and ai doesnt really bother me.

I see the same problem. In my test, two UK armor battlegroups could cross the Rhine with vehicles after the Arnhem RR bridge was blown. Not supposed to happen per the game manual:
quote:

"While a major bridge is down, Battle Groups cannot exit the map in a way that would require
them to cross the river. To cross a major river without using the bridge they will have to use
a ferry crossing or assault crossing[.] Infantry, Airborne, and Engineer BGs can improvise a
crossing of a minor river or canal, even when the bridge is out, and thus can leave the map with
the blown bridge in any direction. Armored, Armored Infantry, and Recon BGs cannot do this.
If a Battle Group improvises a crossing of a destroyed minor bridge, they will lose all guns and
vehicles in their active team slots (they’re returned to the Forcepool) and will not be able to field
any guns or vehicles from their Forcepool until they are able to achieve a supply line equal to
what they had before they made the crossing (or at least a supply line to a minor supply depot)."

72ndarmor, could you please supply us with the saved game file? You can attach it as a zip file to either a subsequent post or send me a PM. Your choice. If you attach it to a post you'll need to hit "post reply" rather than use the "fast reply". Fast reply doesn't give you the option to make attachments. Thanks!

oops, i deleted all the saved game files because i was going too start over so it might take some time. It`s easy to recreate, after the arhnem rail bridge battle is resolved if the bridge is blown you can still move your troops too eldon on the strat map. also what about the bailey or pontoon bridges do they ever appear?

RD Oddball -> RE: ab units crossing the rhine (7/23/2010 3:07:07 AM)

RE: bailey bridges - as long as you control a map and have a BG on the map that can trace full supply to a major supply depot minor bridges will be repaired within 3 turns and major bridges within 6. The manual has more detail about this.

Looking at the data/base/campaign.txt file in Excel you can see Arnhem RR Bridge is coded differently on its second line than other major bridges. Excel shows the others as having eight ######## symbols where Arnhem RR Br has numerics like the minor bridges (not so apparent in a hex editor where its numerics for all).

Attached a zip of the custom op save file shown above. Original op and intermediate save files also available. But my bet is that the error is in campaign.txt

Note: rename the attached .txt file as .zip since the forum software is now telling me .zip uploads arent supported

Westervoort is missing a major bridge icon on the strat connections map

re: Bailey and pontoon bridges - the old bridge gets rebuilt in place. Elegant if not always 100% realistic.

We'd have to have Steve comment on his logic of which bridges were identified as major and which were minor. I suspect it's not just based on size of the bridge itself. Knowing Steve it was likely based on the importance along the route, historical importance, number of other possible routes through a given bottleneck, etc. I could be wrong though. Will point this thread out to him to give us some insight.

xe5 -> RE: ab units crossing the rhine (7/23/2010 8:25:05 PM)

Let me re-phrase - Westervoort doesnt have any bridge icon on the strat connections image. By all indications it should have a major bridge icon.

RD Oddball -> RE: ab units crossing the rhine (7/23/2010 9:08:16 PM)

Please post a screenshot so I can see what other stuff is going on. We're seeing the icon in a freshly started GC so perhaps there's another icon that's being painted over top of the icon location and the bridge icons location needs adjusting. Won't know until I see what you're seeing. Thanks.

Strat connections image not the strat map...

AH!!!! Now I understand! I thought you were talking in the game. Sorry for not getting that from your initial post. You did specify. Thanks for pointing it out.
