So... when are games like these going to be remade? There is absolutely a population base for them, if they aren't priced too high and have good graphics and harpoon-esque detail levels. Are developers seriously not looking at graphic naval games at all? I know Jutland and distant guns are out there, but the price for them is FAR too high, both in freedom of use and price-point. They remove the draconian DRM and ill buy jutland. Other than those, i haven't really seen anything else. Anyone care to comment on why this might be, what they want to see in a future game like this and how we can get across that we want something like this to be made? And i know, there are going to be hardcore harpooners who will "blah blah blah, im hardcore and you're not" but seriously, you would have fun playing it even if it wasn't as in depth as harpoon was.

I want nothing as complex as the harpoon series... Maybe on the level of the old SSI series, but nothing like Harpoon. Jutland and Distant Seas would be perfect but......

Distant Guns was plain ugly, even in comparison to older titles like SH III.

If a studio cant license a state-of-the-art engine for obvious reasons, they should rather stick to 2D and deliver nice artwork hand drawn sprites. There is nothing worse as a publisher bragging with "stunning graphics" when the game looks as it had been developed by using Quake II engine.

If you don´t care about graphics, you might want to look at Warship Combat: Navies at War. (If you´re reading this, Chris: sorry, but the graphics aren´t WC:NAW´s big asset)

The game covers WW1 and WW2, up to four divisions of up to 8 ships each, all surface combatant classes of DD/DE size or above of the major countries of both conflicts are included. Other ships (CVs and transports), more ships per side, and some other improvements are planned. The maps are, I think, 40x40 nm, no land, but land masses and (IIRC) shore batteries are planned for later.

It wasn't just ugly, there was no "game" part. Nothing to do.

For a Fleet Command/Harpoon style game, The Red Pill (working title) is coming.

You can also try out Global Conflict Blue:

GCblue looks like what i was looking for. Hopefully a larger game company will take on something like this though. I thought FC was a good start, but of course its compatibility with newer systems is crap. I also loved fighting steel. At least there you had something, although the graphics are now very dated.

Wow! Just rushed out and ordered the lot.
This is exactly what I wanted. All the time I was thinking I might like a fleet combat game, when actually I wanted a soap/entertainment DVD.

Thanks lxxsumi8.
You're a lifesaver.

Who needs a naval strategy game when you can get the Queer As Folk boxed DVD set?

I thought Distant Guns and Jutland were fine graphics-wise. I bought both. The thing that I don't like about them is the company that developed them. Storm Eagle Studios is the working definition of abysmal customer service. I doubt that I'll ever buy anything else from them.

Red Pill looks awesome.

Harpoon Classic / Commander's Edition is not so complex.  Although you don't get 3d graphics, the graphics adds to immersion of being in a command center.
