kanibal -> setting a specific hex for LRCAP? (8/12/2010 4:49:35 PM)

On page 153 of the manual it states:

"Long Range CAP may now be performed while normal CAP is flown. A new LRCAP level toggle is located just above the normal CAP level toggle. If you set a unit to LRCAP as primary mission, you may then split the units CAP duties between the unit’s base hex (CAP) and a nearby target hex (LRCAP)."

The manual implies that you choose which hex is going to be covered by your LRCAP.

I have two questions:

1. How or where do you designate which hex your LRCAP is supposed to protect?

2. Can you choose a non base hex as the target of your LRCAP responsibilities?

Thank You,

Kanibal

1. You set the target hex like you would set a target for an air strike.
2. Of course.

You can choose a task force that's in range too, very handy when you need to supply or reinforce a contested hex.

Something fun to do is figure out where he's flying his transport aircraft (usually some nearly out of supply or surrounded concentration of troops), and LRCAP it. You'll get tons of kills as your fighters tag those old low and slow transports!

Never thought of that, Acepylot. Good Idea!

Is the primary mission set to escort, sweep or does it matter?

Problem is you can't designate such a task force that is just out of range, but will come in range of LRCAP during the execution of the next turn (as far as I can tell at least), so my ships get sunk anyway just as they are approacing a base with a heavy fighter presence...

I seem to recall being able to designate "out of range TF's" and do it often now, maybe it was an earlier version that you could not as I seem to recall? Maybe there is a range limit on just how far out of range? Farthest I have designated out of range IIRC was like maybe 3 or 4 hexs.

OK, thanks for info. Must update my game version I think... Trouble is I still haven't finished playing the first game started just after release of WITPAE, and haven't wanted to introduce changes in the middle of an ongoing game, so I've been playing on version 1.00.

Patch now!! [:)] There shouldn't be any problem, but if you want to be sure just copy your entire AE folder to another location before patching as a backup.

BTW, LRCAP'ing a TF that is out of range during the orders phase works fine, and was possible in all versions of WitP.

Can someone clarify what the primary mission selection is when attempting to use LRCAP in a designated hex or to protect a designated TF? I know how to select a target. My confusion is with regard to which mission type will not interfere with your LRCAP needs?

Whatever percentage you don't set to LRCAP (or Rest) will fly the primary mission you've selected.

For example, if you select "Escort" at 10k feet, then click on 20% LRCAP with a destination, 20% of your planes will LRCAP the destination, the other 80% will attempt to fly escort for any air strike.

If you select Escort, 100% LRCAP, Destination hex.... 100% of your planes will LRCAP the destination hex.

If you select Sweep, 50% LRCAP, 30% Training, 10% Rest.... 50% will LRCap, 30% will train, 10% will rest, and the remaining 10% will sweep the destination hex (which would also be the hex you LRCAP if you selected a destination hex). Change the sweep to escort, and that 10% would attempt to fly escort.

AFAIK !!!!!

Of course, this assumes that every aircraft passes it's "fly" check. If it doesn't than you may not have a full "50%" or what have you actually LRCAP something (or whatever).
