Aahh...Up Front...that brings back gaming memories.

Stridor -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/21/2011 6:47:13 AM)

Here is a movie which demonstrates the value of not being seen.

JMass -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/21/2011 2:23:35 PM)

I did a new panzergrau skin for the Sdkfz 251 C, I must update now his three color camo version and then I'll return to work on the Pz IV.

Excellent, JMass. You really are good. Please keep up the good work.

I got to say it again...that grass just adds to the immersion. Beautiful job you guys.

murkz -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/21/2011 10:24:55 PM)

Have to agree with redcharlie, that really does look very good indeed :)

lancer -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/22/2011 3:10:52 AM)

G'day,

The grass and other examples of ground foliage in the screenshots turn the game into a compelling contempary offering as opposed to the previous bare bones blast-from-the-past of before.

[edit] I'm probably being overly harsh here. The winter scenery looks fantastic and all the map making examples shown by the mad russian were/are excellent. Still, having a variety of 'textures' without any grass or ground cover did produce a pretty bare and spartan appearance. [edit]

I'd be spending as much time as you want on the 'gardening' (although it looks pretty good as is).

While graphics definitely aren't everything there would, I'd imagine, be a sizeable chunk of your potential market that might pass on the game purely because of the graphical comparision with the 'competition'.

Grass and flowers get you into the ballpark.

As somebody mentioned above it also adds enormously to the immersion.

Cheers,

Lancer

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/22/2011 4:34:51 AM)

Lancer, the thing about the PC series is that it was designed from the ground up to be a construction set. You can mod any, and all, terrain/ground/building/structure textures, vehicles, infantry, sound, animation, weapons, individual vehicle numbers with a decal system. There is nothing that you can't add to this game in terms of looks. Any modder can add anything they want. Once the game itself is good enough to support quality game play, and obviously I think it is, then the game is ready to go wherever the community wants to take it.

Matrix is saying the series lives on with a continuation of the series in PC4 which will be set in North West Europe, but there could well be excursions along the way. To places like the Pacific, North Africa and outside of the standard WWII setting. There could also be expansion packs with more campaigns, more added map textures or new game features as the series is taken to new locations and time periods.

PC is a series that could go anywhere after 1930. It all depends on where we, the community, want it to go. Because, even if Matrix doesn't go there, nothing will stop the modders from taking it wherever they want to go with it. I can't wait to see all the new materials, scenarios and mods once the update is released.  The nicest thing about the series is that the mods aren't just cosmetic. The equipment and unit information isn't hard coded. It's fed into the code from XML files. You put a new XML file in the game and it reads it.

In PC, you don't just take a T-34 and make it look like a Sherman. You make a Sherman tank and add it to the rest of the vehicles already in the game! To me that's a HUGE reason I'm involved in the PC system and not another.

Good Hunting.

Since it's been pointed out that I'm a bit behind on my screen shots here are some I took today showing the interface.

Here is the opening shot on one of my 2k maps.

Good Hunting.

I can make the message box go away to get a better view.

I can also make the HUD disappear to see the entire map display area.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/22/2011 5:44:51 AM)

But you know sometimes I have a hard time determining what the terrain are for a particular area. So, I hit the "7" key and get the terrain grid.

This was a key request by the community that I'm glad to say was implemented by Stridor's tremendous coding efforts.

In the back ground can be seen a series of yellow flags. Those are neutral and can be worthless or valuable. Whatever the scenario designer wants to assign to them.

Good Hunting.

The "K" key will bring up the extensive list of Hot Keys. This is certainly a much improved PC.

Good work MR showing some of the modded interface features. Much improved!

Question - In the second to the last screen shot above where you toggled the HUD off... does this translate to (Spacebar - Toggle Orders Menu?)

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/22/2011 11:20:43 PM)

Not sure I understand the question.

No. The Alt key removes the HUD for that shot. The spacebar does the same as right clicking the screen to bring up the orders buttons.

Mobius -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/23/2011 2:20:38 AM)

Two T-34/85s.

Heading into the village. I know what is in there. I plan to dismount my troops and have them lead the tanks.

HUD off

I tab to Commander view in the HQ tank. In the message box you can see the chat messages. You can scroll back through them if you forget what you were talking about.

As spectacular as that air attack may look, I really, really hope it is a very rare and lucky hit. I would hate it if air attacks were that accurate and overmodelled. Please, please, make sure it isn't. It was extremely hard to hit such small targets.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/23/2011 3:06:03 PM)

It's not a rare and unusual occurance if your tanks are that bunched up and just sitting still. I've yet to see a tactical wargamer that LIKES airstrikes. There is always something that's wrong with them.

Out in the open, sitting still, bunched up together in PCO you are going to be sorry if the other side has airpower.

Good Hunting.

junk2drive -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (1/23/2011 3:23:25 PM)

It works like any other game. My planes miss and the enemy planes take out a bunch of stuff with one bomb.
OK I'm exaggerating. Were not IL-2s and Stukas feared? Friendly strikes are rare but do happen. Sometimes you see a tank out in the open and your plane attacks an infantry squad. It is random enough I think to keep it interesting. Some other games I prefer no planes at all because of the free recon, friendly strikes, guaranteed kills.

With PCO, if you can't see it, you won't know what the plane attacked or if it hit.

Which happens.

A tactical commander on the ground is not in charge of the airforce. He calls them for help and hopes they help. That's why gamers HATE them. You, as in real life, have no control over what that pilot attacks. It works here as well as or better than in other games.

We don't expect you to like CAS, because no tactical commander does. Patton refused to let 2nd Tactical Air Force to operate in his AO for awhile because they had done so many friendly fire attacks.

It was in the war, it's in here as well.

Artillery now can run out of rounds too.

Yes, and so can everybody else in the game. The scenario designer has the ability to give ammunition in increments from 0 to 400%. I can also make units from a single unit up to 20. For any unit in the scenario.

Which means I can assign an artillery unit 1 105mm gun or 20. That gives you tremendous flexibility in how the game is played.

You want Germans in groups and Russians in bunches? You can do that. You want a single PzIV at that crossroads but the 4 coming in all in the same platoon? You can do that. You want a platoon with 20 PzIV's in it? You can do that too.

Good Hunting.
