Shannon V. OKeets -> WIF Add-ons included in MWIF (8/25/2010 2:38:20 AM)

Here is a summary spreadsheet of the counters and maps in MWIF (product 1). Thanks, Patrice.

Easo79 -> RE: WIF Add-ons included in MWIF (7/21/2013 5:22:39 PM)

Some weeks ago I saw at this forum the list of optional rules (and/or expansions?) that are going to be implemented, but I cannot find it anymore [&:]. I do not rememeber in which thread it was located. I remember, though, that it displayed a warm, cream-coloured layout. ¿Has anybody a clue about its location?

EDIT: I can't seem to get the forum software to display the picture. But you can download the attachment - which is the JPG.

Easo79 -> RE: WIF Add-ons included in MWIF (7/21/2013 8:40:24 PM)

Due to reasons well beyond my comprehension, I cannot download the file. However, as a test, I have just downloaded from this same forum a zipped excel spreadsheet that carried the .txt extension. Perhaps if the .jpg extension is changed into .txt the system will allow me to download the file (and I will change back the .txt to .jpg in my drive)

Shannon V. OKeets -> RE: WIF Add-ons included in MWIF (7/21/2013 9:24:54 PM)

Another try. The Forum Server apparently has trouble uploading the file.

Yes! Well spotted!

I love that old-looking yellowish colour, as when one finds a little gem of a book in a book-shop specialized in second hand books. I remember with nostalgia the good moments spent at De Slegte, in Amsterdam.

De Slegte in the Kalverstraat? I used to work there to add to my students income in the '80's... How small the world is...

Yes, that one!!![X(] During some months several years ago, my Saturday routine included a walk to Dam Square and then down the Kalverstraat and a visit to De Slegte. My "Eagle against the Sun" and my Henry Kamen's "Phillip II" copies, for instance, were bought there. Some old books were still marked in gulden...maybe it was you the one who wrote some of those prices...[:)]

Easo79 -> RE: WIF Add-ons included in MWIF (8/4/2013 11:34:02 PM)

It seems that all options,as far as I understand them, are of the following type

OFF= keep the game simpler
ON= add complexity and realism.

Does it mean that for a first-timer (and I mean absolute first-timer) it might be advisable to switch everything OFF?

I do not think so.

More options does not always increase the difficulty level much. I would actually argue that some options make the game easier to play. Fractional odds, for example, is an option that makes the game simpler.

Some options increase playability even though they add additional rules you need to learn. Examples: Pilots and scrap units.

mmmmm...let me think..is it because without fractional odds serious pro players avoid "23:4" attacks and try to reach "24:4" which is then converted into 6:1 instead of 5:1?

Yes. That is part of it. But without fractional odds then a defensive ground support of 1 can lower an entire odds. So then players start to calculate on how much air support that could be affecting the combat and so on. But with fractional odds you simply assign your best units for the attack.

Playing with fractional odds has been a huge time saver in my games. A lot less time spent on mathematics. [:)]

Its not just pro-players.
It was always very silly watching a single factor flown in by the defender from 20 hexes away and shift a whole odds column. And defensive shore bombardment - even sillier effects on the odds column. Try closing the med by taking Gibraltar with the old defensive shore bombardment rules.

And that's an argument for not using fractional odds: it should be hard to focus a side's forces, more attacks being made at lower odds brings the original balance back to the game.
