Bozz -> little problemes with AI (8/25/2010 4:11:41 PM)

firts, Sorry for my english, I'm French [:)]

First I want to congratulate the peoples who are working on this game, I'm playing it since it is out and I really enjoy it today it is for me one of the best 4x space empire game since MOO2.

I'm playing DW with the latest patch 1.0.6.0

In my recent game I play as the Human Alliance, in a galaxy of 700 stars and 10 other empires, but now we are 22 empires, due to some independante populations who decieded to join the big empires and rebellions.
All settings are set on normal, and I disabled space monsters.

Im in the late game, most of the empire are starting to be well developped, but I noticed that I'm overpowered and AI is in certain way dump.

I explain, in the early stage of the game, I discovered 3 locations with a lot of abandonned ships I immediatly decieded to send my constructor ships to the location and I managed to repair them carefully because of my economie, I repaired 18 capital ship, 10 cruiser, 10 destroyer, 3 fregate, and 2 Troop transporter I've done this very slowely (again because of my economie), but I never saw any other empire repairing these abandonned ships, this is why now I have the biggest army in the galaxy and the strongest, I just noticed than one allied empire has repaired a world destructor [&o] and I destroyed the other abandonned ships that I don't want to repair. My military score is 31409, the second in the graphic has 11405.

I have to much peoples in my empire, something like 176734M, the Ketarov (2nd in graphic) have only the half of that.
So I earn so much money that I have the best technologies of the galaxy because of crash research.
Population is growing toooooooo fast, is there a way to make it grow less faster (by modding a file or something like that)

I had to mod the game to add planetes to other empires to make them more challenging, but even by doing this I'm still overpowered.

This is my first real game, so when I finish him I will start another game.

I really enjoy this game a lot, but for the moment it seems to me that AI isn't very good.

I know that I can make other empires start with more planetes and better tech than me but I don't like doing that,, I want everyone to start at the same level, the early stage of the game is challengin, specially when you have an agressive empire next to you (I had the Dhayut confederation next to me) but it seems to me that I'm developping to quick for the other empire.

BUT they was a big empire of Securan, with a big population and the strongest army of the galaxy, they were stronger than I was at the time but now, this empire has been split in 3 other empire who have taken their independance.

For now I will wait untill the ennemie empires grow and see what will happen, I enjoy looking how they devellop, and make war with other empires.

Hi, Bozz. Welcome to the forums. BTW your english is awesome.[;)]

Sounds to me like you've figured the game out. Either that or you're playing through a game where you've had a fair bit of luck and found the best resources, abandoned ships. Things like that can really turn the game in your favour.

There is no way at present to mod your population growth rate for a game you're playing, but you can edit these attributes. Take a look at this:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2436614

You can create a custom theme for Distant Worlds and use your own ideas, or you can try some of the mods.[:)]

Bozz -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/25/2010 5:26:47 PM)

Thanks for replying me and for the link, this mod looks awesome, will give it a try to night

Its truth that I had some luck in my game [:D].

lordxorn -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/25/2010 8:06:54 PM)

Bozz welcome, [:D]

you didn't mention anything about how you set up your game up from the beginning. There are settings there to give yourself a big disadvantage, and the AI a little help.

b0mber -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/25/2010 10:35:40 PM)

It seems that you have done it well being your first play. I start my games now with my home system at "Trying" because it's a good handicap. After 23 years my economy is one of the worst and my population is around the lowest of the galaxy.

A bit offtopic, but at my first games I was playing with Unstable level of agression. When I was going to exchange some tech with other empires almost all of them had the same technologic level. I think this is because they are constantly giving their techs to persuade others to declare trade sanctions on a third empire. Now playing with normal level of agression seem to have made things better.

There are independent populations which give you tech bonus when are colonized, ruins wich give you high tech boosts when explored. There are lots of idle ships around the galaxy which you can retire to get tech bonus, debris fields with lots of ships which you can repair and retire... All this stuff ruins the technology aspect of the game for me. I expect they add an option to remove or al least reduce all this.

Bozz -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/26/2010 1:19:15 AM)

The situation evolved in my Game [:D]
I played some hours after work today.
its amazing, I managed to get an alliance and protectora with 2 other Human empires and a Kiadian empire, one of the human empire is also allied with the Kiadian empire.

The Dhayut (My biggest ennemy) is growing stronger every year, I don't know how but they managed to get an army strenght of 27903, mine is 37809, they just captured 5 of my not defended colonies, and I destroyed 3 of their fleets in collaboration with my human allies, they are far away, but they sended 2 fleets to attack the Dhayut [&o]
Dhayut ships are very fast (Mine are slow)

Really I'm happy, because when I woke up this morning I wanted to delete that game and start another one.
I also noticed other empires who are starting to grow very fast, like the Ketarov empire who has the second best economy and they will reach my level soon.

I have to apologies to you guys, I really thought that I was Overpowered, but now the situation is evloving.

b0mber, I always set Agresiveness to the middle (don't remember the name) with 3 friendly empire, 3 neutral-little agressive empire and 3 very agresive empire
+ independant pop able to start empire.

I had the same probleme at the beginning, specially because of my war with the Dhayut, But once I repaired my first Capital ship [:D] I destroyed a lot of their ships and signed a peace treaty until now, I had some wars with them from time to time but nothing serious just capturing their undefended colonies in my territorie.

I was lucky by discovering these abandonned ships, In my game almost everybody has trade sanctions against everybody, they are just 7 or 8 empires who have Free trade and only 3 with Mutual protection pact, So nobody really has the same tech level

I never retire abandonned ships (just retire one or two Capital ship) I prefere a big fleet.
I agree, I discovered 3 debris fields with lots of ships at the beginning of the game, I secured them and repaired them that gave me a very big advantage.
I destroyed most of them because of Ketarov Construction ships who came in the systeme, but I managed to repair tons of CS and cruisers that killed my economie but now I have the best military.

lordxorn: what are these settings who can give an advantage to AI empire ?
I usually put everyting on normal for everybody, just the home systemes setting is put on Harsh.
And I remove space creatures.

I hope that you guys understand my english [&o]

Usually I never post on english forum, my english has to be funny for you [:D]
They are no french forum like this one for DW.

Hey Bozz, it sounds like you are off to a great start. You have gotten very lucky with what you have found so early. You current game may get very challenging, soon, from what it sounds like.

If you want a more challenging game in the future I would suggest turning up aggression to "restless", and setting Pirates to "many". Also, try using the maximum 20 empires, and set up AI empires so that there is one of each race, and set any empire that has a unique government type to use that government. I find 700/1000 system games of this type very rewarding.

Bozz -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/26/2010 1:39:46 PM)

Thanks, I will try that next time,

but every time I set Pirates to "many" I always discover lot of empires who stop developping because they lose all their ships and bases because of pirates, most of time I disable Space creatures and set pirates to normal.

Shark7 -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/26/2010 2:13:30 PM)

The last game I played (and actually lost BTW) the Boskara ended up with 3 times the firepower of every other empire, I was 2nd behind them. They eventually over-ran me due to having too much to defend. I'm guessing they found one of the SY-600 and super-weapon ruins, they were just annihilating the other AI empires at will. It was definitely a most challenging game.

b0mber -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/26/2010 2:45:43 PM)

Just one more thing, if you select the races at random the game sometimes places different empires which shares their race at the same system, which cause those empires to be at war since the begining not letting them to develop correctly.

Hmm, I dont have that problem, but I run the AI on "Restless" aggressiveness, maybe that makes a difference? Also, if you arent playing max 20 players on a 700 system map, there will be more pirates to empires ration, so try it with one of each race on the map!

Ohhhh... How I HATE the Boskara, Dhayuut and Sluken. At the worst case scenario they expand in ridiculous speed! Thankfully in my current game the aggressive Sluken started to bump into borders of two my allied races. After that I just created my main attack fleet and started to snap some uncolonized worlds from slukens border and to generally annoy them with my main task force. Idiot sluken were already figting two-front war and still declared war on. Fine by me. After a fast and bloodless blitzgrieg war I had conquered about 1/3 of their worlds, securing my place as the most powerful military might in the galaxy.
Still, every time I start a game and bump into Boskara, Dhayuut or Sluken in early game I get very, VERY worried. They can ruin the game annoyingly fast if you are not careful.

I'm sure that Hive Mind government helps them as well. Probably has happiness and war weariness modifiers the other governments don't.

That sounds pretty epic!!!

Well, Boskara and Dhayuut has big bonus on war weariness. So their economy and morale doesn't suffer much when going to insane killing spree (Monster kill!). Even without Hive mind. Actually Sluken are much more easily controlled in most cases than their violent cousins. Still I'm not really sure what to think about Dhayuut and Boskara. It's nice that they follow the backstory, being bloodlusty conquerers. But, sometimes they can totally ruin fun and challenging game by just rolling over everybody. Go figure. I haven't played against Boskara or Dhayuut in newest version so I don't know how changes have affected them. Other races seem to work much better currently. They give you a good challange, colonize quite well, handle diplomacy nicely and don't feel like they are cheating with the economy all the time.

Bozz -> RE: little problemes with AI (8/29/2010 12:14:43 PM)

I like the Dhayut, they are always at war with everybody, in my current game they`re empire is just next to mine and I had more than 10 wars with them, they have a colonie in every corner in the galaxy because of invading everybody, but they are smart, I like how they invaded a Zenox colony with something like 40 ships, colonie was hevely defended that was epic...

The Dhayuut and Boskara can give you quite challenge, I give them that. The problem, for me personally, is that if the Boskara or Dhayuut are left alone too much, other side of the galaxy all alone etc. They develop into a steamroller that you just can't stop. No way, no how.
If other empires closer to them keep their insane expansion rate in check, they are challenging and yet even fun force to compete with.
I probably should stop complaining too much and try figure out some bulletproof tactic to tackle with 'em when necessary. Any suggestions?

Personally I think an industrial size can of RAID is the solution to the bugs. [:D] I might have to mod that into the game...chemical warfare to wipe out the undesirables....oh I am evil. [:D]
