18/4/45

From CVL Hosho
to
Convoy commanders, all captains
TF 170, 158, 143, 70 and 164

Due to intensive submarine activity area TAKAO, and bombing of our airfields from bombers originating China, convoy is to be rerouted.
New track, Manilla bay heads, Naga, Leyte, pacific ocean, Tokyo.

All ships to maintain utter alert, reports of multiple sinkings of our ships to our North.
CVE's will maintain Combat air patrol to limits of endurance................

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/5/2014 8:21:47 AM)

There are Japanese ships at Naga, a gathering of the invaluable E class, a dozen strong. Forsight, months old, also see's a AO and its escort waiting there, filled to the brim.
The ships anchor, and await orders

An hour later, the anchors are being hastily raised again, overhead, high, very high, the glint of enemy aircraft..........

The P38's are roving all over the southern and central phillipines now.
And little escapes their searching, hate filled gaze..........

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/5/2014 8:34:58 AM)

Susuzuki steams over a mirror calm sea, under a blazing sun

On her starboard side, huddled in the shade offered by the bridge, the 25mm gun pontoon, the middle watch of stokers idly fill the last few minutes before it is their time to go below again.
There is little conversation in these times (what is their to talk about after so long away from home?...........and why would you bring THAT up, when it causes so much inner pain)
Just the quiet smoking, the finishing of cups of tea (and what destroyer ever returns to port with its full compliment of brew mugs, the ocean floors across the world must be littered with them)
Hirate and Okano sit side by side, quiet. Both men are mentally girding themselves for the hours ahead.
It is beyond hot here in the tropics, so close to the equator.
The waters are hot, bath temperature hot. The air is hot.........and today dry as sand
Four boilers, low speeds, little air passing down into the ship.......

It is hell below, 110 degrees F on the bottom plates, 140 to 160 on the top plates.........
No place to work.
But they must.

"You know Hirate, I'd forgotten about this aspect of steaming, I though Zuiho was bloody hot...........this is going to be bloody murder today"
"Makes you pine for Chiburi almost"
""Not bloody likely......that tub"

Simultanously, both men think of the same thing

Of Russia

Of a crate

"We were lucky you know, that we were not on her when she got sunk"
"Bloody lucky..........how did they get her?"
Submarine attack I heard..........."

"Probably what will get us all, you know"
Hirate laughs........"Nah, bet it is a battleship brother, important people like us deserve nothing less!"

pws1225 -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/5/2014 3:35:06 PM)

Just so you know, this is the AAR I always look for first when I check the forum every morning. Thanks for putting in the effort to provide us an excellent story that is expertly written.

Many thanks, Paul

Oh-oh ... is there some foreshadowing going on here?

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/6/2014 9:54:25 AM)

19/4/43

japan launches a surprise attack towards canton, and crushes the Chinese units in the line
They race now towards the city, intent on one thing, murder and revenge..........

In Tokyo, the vast majority of the cities inhabitants remain indoors, keeping their heads down

Around the Deit, the Imperial palace, a dozen or so places, there is gunfire, and smoke
Columns of trucks, light tanks race in multiple directions..........

Confusion, to put it mildly, riegns

Late in the evening, Tokyo radio makes an announcement

A coup, it appears, has taken place " to secure the safety of the Emperor, and the empire"
The people are told, remain indoors (or be shot)
To question nothing (or be shot)
And to obey instantly any orders given by the Army (or be shot)

The process is complete. from democracy, to a socialist republiK, to a strong man leadership, to now , a Military council, to utter control of a peoples lives.
But who controls the council?

the radio does not say.
But does it really matter?

The war, with all its misery, continues................

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/6/2014 9:59:17 AM)

The Convoy Susuzuki escorts has turned south east at manilla, and sails in calm, but close waters through the myriad islands towards Guiuan, leyte gulf, and the long trek home.

Overhead, however, a welcome sight. Ogowa's Eagles circle, the drone such a comforting sound.

But ahead, terrible news

3 fletcher class destroyers have raced north, attacked the E class ships at anchor there, and sunk all but two of them.
And B-29's have hit the airfields there as well.

The gap, it is clear, is narrowing.
But the tankers cannot be driven any faster....................

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/6/2014 10:01:22 AM)

There are other dangers, of course.

And as dusk begins to fall, a periscope breaks the surface, gains a bearing on a target...........a destroyer...............and makes its attack.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/7/2014 8:49:27 AM)

Hirate and Okano are in the after damage control station, waiting for the fall out from Dusk action stations.
Things happen fast

First, the action alarm, loud, insistant, designed to make all who hear dump adredaline into their viens, to bring you racing to your stations
Being already at theirs, the two men can but exchange grim looks............an alarm now , here can mean but one thing......
Moments later, thoughts are confirmed, below them Susuzuki's boilers spring to life, the forced draft blowers rising in tone to their hellish shriek
About them , the ship begins to vibrate, and lean heavily as her skipper takes obviously violent avoiding action............

Men are filling the pasageways fast..........

"Action stations, Action stations!....we are under submarine attack!............all guns, enemy bearing 090 degrees!"

S@#t" exclaims Okano...........
""Double that" replies Hirate.

Sphincter muscles tighten...............their is little one can do in this situation, except hang on, and hope............

The fish, two of them, slide 20 feet aft of Susuzuki's boiling stern...............the scope disapears....

Frustratingly.......no contacts will be found.

Later, over the rice, Hirate makes a comment
"That was neat work you know, the way the Skipper avoided those fish............"
"Its a neat ship"

"And a lucky one"

And both together: "and lets hope it stays that way"

Lecivius -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/7/2014 4:50:36 PM)

Myself as well.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/8/2014 10:53:30 AM)

Apologies for the indulgence at the end of this.................

Spring is in the air
Around the Imperial palace, the cherry blossoms are budding, beginning to show green. The sun, higher in the sky, now brings slight warmth, and promises to bring more.
And the birds, ignorant of mans squabbles, are busy as ever in song

His royal highness, the Emperor, descendent of the Gods themselves, breathes the air, and feels the heavines of his heart, the weariness in his bonesw.

This war , gods, this war................
In front of him, the arrogant little jerk, General Sugiyama, formally the commander of Home Army, now, apparently, the new Military Council leader, leader of japan itself.

Miserable little jerk...............

"Your highness?"
"You were saying?"

"The rebellion has been crushed..............you are safe.............there will be no peace party"

So........the last chance is gone...........if there ever was one.

"I see...........and now?'
"A new council ...........picked men. We will give you victory.........or"
"Or fight them to a standstill?"
'We almost have"

Yes, yes, there is that. The Emperor sighs..........
"and the memebers of this council?'
"Dedicated men, men who's advice and support I always seek.............."

He hands the emperor the list.
Familiar names..........solid names.
Stickers to the end..............men, Japan will need

Enjoy the time off - don't put on too much weight!

I'm sure someone will bump your AAR from page 2 when the time is right. (does that sound like a Cialis commercial?)[;)]

PS ... better add Pax Mondo to your list!

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/20/2014 6:54:03 AM)

21st of April, 1945

Leyete Gulf
20000 feet

Where the air is thin, and death swift, and often, too often, terrible

Ogowa strains his eyes, seeking, seeking the bombers that MUST, MUST be ahead
He is climbing still, climbing hard, straining his fighter, straining his formation, beginning to straggle behind, as they climb, and climb, the earth falling away, further, further below, the horizon stretching ever further every moment, hazy, indistinct now.

Diogowa is on his right shoulder, as always. Ogowa barely has to fling a look, Diogowa is there at his wing, has been forever, will always be there, forever...........he see them.........

Only a dozen..........B-29's, 5 miles away, 6000, 7000 feet higher yet, steadily carving the sky northwards, vapour trails inter, ittent now, the beasts are climbing still........

And above them
The sharks...........20 twin tailed devils at least
Barsteds

Almost automatically he does his checks, trim, oxygen, safties off.........
Adjusts his mask, and coldly plans murder at 22000 feet.

Ogowas eagles are 68 strong

The bombers slide past, under his left wing now, imperious beast, beasts though that must be filled with nervous men
The eagles turn, and follow 2000 yards astern, gathering, one eye on the bombers, one on the fighters twitchy above them.

Ogowa grins. He just has to be patient

His stragglers are gathering with him, one wing now breaking to the left flank, the other hunting right

The 38's cannot wait, the odds are growing too quickly.

They peel up,, twist down, dive at them

The dance begins again

A 38 is coming down at his right shoulder, turning in at him, ogowa banks towards him, ruder, stick, throttle, mind, machine as one, the 38 slides aft and below, the tracer harmless..............Ogowas bank continues into a roll, the thirty eight "above him" imprinted on the world, now curving into view, left to right, the buka terribly aware of his danger, banking hard, , breaking away

Ogowa does not fire, the Buka is negated , is he not?
Left stick, left rudder, s bending into the tail end charlie bomber, throttle full boost, the world roaring, vibrating, the gleaming giant growing, growing.
Guns crash, the tracers reach.........an engine blooms into fire, pale faces flashing past, tracer chasing, the george rolling, twisting, Ogowas head twisting as well, seeking the next...........

The bombers stream on..........it will take more than one strike to bring these barsteds down
Diogowa is with him still, they turn together, turn, and turn, and the 38 is there swinging with them, 300 yards ahead.
On the very edge of falling out of the sky, the three fighters turn, wings almost vertical, top rudder, top rudder, a touch of flap, a touch of flap, aaaaahhh............we gain, we gain.........we aim, aim for the very heart od the barsted..........
And he explodes as some other george cuts into the circle, and steals the kill.......................

TRUK!

Ogowas eagles land at Naga, picking a path through the still smoking string of craters stitched across the field.
They have lost 2 planes, but no pilots
8 B-29's have been killed, 10 of the twin tail devils will never fly again.

Naga remains open
The CAP over the convoys piercing Leyte gulf remains in place.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/20/2014 7:04:53 AM)

22nd April

Some things are almost in explainable
But when men recount these things, myths are born.

And many myths aim to spear fear to your very heart.

Destroyers Monoghan, Stockham, Case, Ried, Satterlee, Robinson, Alden, Aylwin, patrolling the seas of Cotabato.
The weather is grey, the seas lumpy, the destroyers rising, falling, rolling, the white caps rolling down their flanks.
A rain squall, thick, grey, races across the sea towards them, a rainbow dances across the sky

There is no pot of gold at its base

Just 9 small shapes erupting from the rain, a bare 100 feet above the white horses below

Did the sun blind searching eyes?
Or sheer exhaustion?

9 slow Nates
There is, incredibly, no flack. And on the Nates behalf.....................no missing
All 8 destroyers are struck by these human guided missiles.struck, and struck hard
Stockham and Ried will both sink
The other 6 will burn.............

And thus a myth will be born
A terrible, horrifying myth
The kamikazes cannot be stopped........................

PaxMondo -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/20/2014 12:32:16 PM)

Ogawa is sitll flying George, correct? Great job with your CAP defense ...

And kami's used correctly, like above ... yeah, really deadly.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/21/2014 8:30:33 AM)

23rd

Hirate can tell almost to the moment when Susuzuki clears the straights, and enters yet again the wide waters of the Pacific.
The movements begin gently at first, but rise rapidly, Susuzuki pitches, rolls, and shudders, as her bow buries deeply into the green
The pacific very rarely is.

This is a facet of life over the years we have not mentioned enough, the never ending movement of the sea, of the rise, the fall, the roll of these ships of war.
Hirate and Okano do not get sea sick. They are the lucky ones. Many do. For some, no matter the years spent at sea, the miles steamed, this marks the beginning of yet another stint of misery.
The swells this night are two metres, the white caps frequent.
Susuzuki will roll, will fall away from under the men, will whip them side to side, will raise them, drop them again
She will creak, groan, rattle, and ever present sea will hiss, and bang down her sides
And the movements will go on, and on................

Within the hour, the first buckets will be getting filled.

When the torpedo hits the tanker, the clang banging like a bell upon her hull, i guess that there would be a few, quite a few, who wished that the fish had got them, to stop this misery....................

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/21/2014 8:38:31 AM)

Hi Pax Mondo
yes, its the second version of the beast.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (8/21/2014 8:56:26 AM)

General Sugiyama rubs his hand wearily over his scalp.
Command of the military council has not been as he expected.
Nothing bloody has

Now he faces them again, the men he calls the "but for" men.
I command an army of millions, an air force of thousands, even a Navy of some worth still.
But all I hear is , "sir, this we could do..............but"

There are men
yes, there are men a plenty

But there is little in the way of fuel, in supplies, in any bloody thing!
I never knew it was this bad.......................

We are abandoning central China. The attack on canton falters. Not through lack of wil, of men.
Or from defeat in battle

But from lack of rice, of bullets, of petrol.
Humiliating!

I wish to abandon Minando, to save 100000 men.
But I know what I am going to hear

"But sir, we cannot................there is no fuel for adventures like that..............."
"Damnation!"

(japans situation)
Supply 1,700,000
Fuel, 1, 650,000
HI, 526,000
Oil, 298,000

production has basically collapsed..........and at this stage I cannot recover it, I am letting it sort of bumble along now.
Hirate and Okano's convoy represent easily 50% of the merchant shipping, 85% of the tankers I have left.
Cantona' SS have gotten so many of the others...............
