"They must sail"
General Sugiyama stares at the three admirals facing him. Again he repeats the demand, his voice hard, pityless 'They must sail, the fleet MUST sail......I demand it!"

He is met with stony silence, hostile, cold
Finally, one of the elderly men speaks.'For what?, to save Army face again?. We have bled enough for you already, it was your mad scheme, you carry it out!"
Anger fills the general........"And if damn well committed it fully the China operation WILL succeed!"

There have been further engagements in the seas between takao and China, further close range knife fights between destroyers and E class boats. Troops have gotten ashore, and held the counter attacks at Chaochow.

But now, now the enemy carriers , battleships are entering the scene. And takao itself shakes under B-29 bombing.
The Army is losing many men
The Navy, many minor ships.

"Succeed general?. How would you measure success?. We measure it now on days Japan remains unbombed, un invaded!. Only when the transports come for Japan itself will I release Yamato.............only then!. Only Then"

Sugiyama see's the detirmination then. traitorous barsteds, as if ships have value now?.................Barsteds.
"very well....you fools.very well"

Yamato, Musashi, the remaining carriers will remain at anchor a while yet, it seems.
Susuzuki is attached to them.
So, for a while longer, she, and our stokers remain realitevely safe.

As safe as those who fight against a nation that now posses the bomb

Before we begin today, a lesson. As you near the end turn files become huge...........we have been having massive mail problems with non delivery of turns, and Cantona now has to zip his.
I never had a zip program, so that was , for me, interesting

Well, we got a turn through today.

Its a wonderous thing seeing late Essex class CV's and the Alaska class, the Iowa's , wandering around the oceans.
It would be even more wonderous if I could just sink a couple.............LOL

In Minando, the final acts are beginning
The allies have reinforced. marine divisions. The Aussies. Masses of artillery
They out number the remaning japanese now 2 to 1, and with so many succumbing every day the odds grow larger quickly.

This is an army of immense power (2500AV).
But its a long, long way from Japan......

Tilitjap, DEI, falls to the allies

Falls to the third Marines, no less

Imperial HQ notes this carefully. Marines tied down in Minando. Marines in the DEI, no less
There can be no invasion of Japan this year..............

You may want to check out something like Onedrive...in effect cloud storage -- you upload the file to your onedrive and you send an email that links to the file for downloading and sharing. You would avoid the zipping if you dislike that.

All the big free mail programs have something pretty close.

I still love your AAR![&o]

Thanks Lowpe

19th August

Ogowa and Diogowa return from the village. There is a new baby to visit. A bay, tea, delightful conversation. A friendship deep and lasting is building between these two hard fighter pilots, and these two equally (internally) tough Navy wives.
Two, three times a week the two push their rattling bikes down the lanes to the sea side. Frequently they carry backpacks filled with food and other now almost impossible to find essentials.
They are recieved almost wordlessly, and vanish almost immediately
Ogowa notes that they very rarely see these gifts in the house, and wonders quietly to himself just how many villagers 401st sentai is actually supporting now..........

Diogowa now a days rarely stays long in the house , he soon slips away with father to the workshop. There are a million and one things in there, a million and one idea's.
And after the war, surely it will be bright ideas that will restore Japan, yes?.

Autumn is coming. And Japan lies almost quiet. Few, very few planes fly in the air. A great many factories, all but a few shipyards lie quiet.
But here people are not.
massive drafts of the elderly, the very young are being coerced into the drafts of the emergency militia.
There are not enough arms for them. Excuses for uniforms.
But no shortage of desire of the powerful to spill these poor barsteds blood.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/17/2015 9:45:33 AM)

A small victory of sorts

3 tankers, 30000 tons of fuel aboard clear palua island after escaping balikapapan, and turn north for Japan.

No small feat , I feel for August 45!

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/19/2015 9:26:31 AM)

20/8/1945

he is the descendent of the Sun God himself
yet, as with all men, ill health can strike

The emperor of Japan falls ill with a severe chest infection, one that could easily turn into something far worse.
As so many of his subjects have done before him, he takes to a Mountain retreat, a sanitorium, to help clear his lungs, to regain much needed strength.
It is a small place, nestled on the slopes of Mt Odake, in sight of Mt Fuji to its south, the city of Tokyo to its east.
It is usually a quiet place, but not today. Home command is holding a massive air defence exercise, today is the third of five full scramble, full Cap exercise days, a stress test of Tokyo's air defences

Mt Odake is being used by many of the circling fighters, Mt Fuji one way point, the imperial palace another, Mt Odake the last.

There will be nearly three hundred of them involved today.............armed to the teeth, of course.
But few, if any, expecting any real action this week.

They, of course, are going to very, very wrong

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/19/2015 9:32:28 AM)

Japan lands more troops at Okha, the russian port in the North sahklin islands
They are almost 2 to 1 in strength now.

In China, a Japanese counter attack rolls westward towards Foochow, the enemy facing them is a hollow bluff.
But the landings at Changchoaw are in real trouble.

And B-29's pound manilla, and sink 4 AK, a tanker, and 2 DD's alongside the docks..............ships designated to support the china operation.
There are none left to replace them

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/19/2015 9:52:16 AM)

The Enola Gay glitters in the setting sun, a sun that glows red, swollen.
The bomb is aboard.

It has been a perilous journey getting this odd looking bomb to this Chinese field, one that has seen it cross the pacific to Hollandia, then by a different bomber across the south china sea to Honk kong, then another leg to here.

Long Pig and Bigglesworth have both seen it.
"A harmless looking beasty you think Bigglesworth?"
"Until its armed my friend, until its armed"

That, apparently will only occur once its airborne

Long pig has yet to see the detonator, he has met the quiet man who will fit it, admired the way he has spent all of today sweating in the bomb bay practicing the procedure.
That bit will go well, he has no doubt.

But the rest fills him with it

Tomorrow, just after 3 am, two bombers are to take off, he a passenger on "The laughing clown" as an observer.
The flight path, Kagoshima,, Mt Fuji, a dawn bombing of Tokyo.
The target. The emperors palace itself

A flight over the length of a country hardly bombed in the last 2 months, defended by god only knows what.
Japan could have a thousand fighters there tomorrow

Or none
God, let it be none
let em all be stood down, saving petrol

Bigglesworth places a friendly hand upon his shoulder. "Think positive mate. There hasn't been a allied plane over tokyo for three years, at the crack of dawn, they are all going to be still in bed..it will be a cracking good show, you will be part of history,,,,,,,,,

Burma, the Irrawaddy, the 101 other mad things that have happened to him this bloody war. Stuff that, Long pig thinks, I can do without any more bloody history...............

Something is going to boom.

Will the bomb be dropped? Can Japan thwart the bomber with their cap?

Mt Odake is being used by many of the circling fighters, Mt Fuji one way point, the imperial palace another, Mt Odake the last.

There will be nearly three hundred of them involved today.............armed to the teeth, of course.
But few, if any, expecting any real action this week.

Some pilot may just get a lucky hit, maybe ram the bomber.

How much luck can Long Pig have?

Nail-biting suspense.

This AAR has been a brilliant read. I don't even own WITP:AE, let alone played it and I've been captivated. Also, well done to Cantona for carrying on the game and allowing the drama to continue.

Mike McCreery -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/20/2015 9:12:09 PM)

Personally I have a problem with the scoring of the game regarding the dropping of the Atomic Bomb.

I am not sure why the game designers felt the need to penalize the Allies for using them when they did so historically.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/21/2015 12:15:25 AM)

..............."latest intelligence is that the Emperor of Japan has retired to a sanitorium 40 miles north of Tokyo, located near Mt Odare"
Therefore you are ordered to deliver the special bomb today to Tokyo, secondary target Osaka."

Thus it is ordered, thus it will be done.

The Land of Japan is still dark as Mt Fuji looms into view on the horizon, its peak already lit by the sun climbing over the horizon, already bathing the two great bombers in its soft early glow.

The sky up here is clear, but to the north heavy and dark, a front due to sweep in by midday.
Not only clear, but smooth, and cold
Longpig shifts his arse on the seat (its considerably smaller now since the wars begginning) and raises his glasses again, seeking Fuji, seeking in the grey light below Tokyo bay ahead.
And there it is, glittering................the city coming into view

he glances over to the Enola Gay, and wonders at the weapon soon to be released. he cannot imagine the millions ahead having any idea of what comes swiftly their way.
The laughing clown sways in the first bump in the road for the day, Mt fuji begins to slide down the port side.
Long pig takes a deep breath.
"Its only another bombing run.........only just another bombing run"

Tokyo bay glitters

But above it, something else sparkles in the light as they climb from the dark into it, rising towards them swiftly and surely.

Fighters
lots of fighters

No.................and the blood freezes
SWARMS of the barsted..................

'pass the 9/16th open ender brother"
Okano fishes in the toll bag, locates the dull spanner, passes it to Hirate
"Thankyou"
"OK, ready?"
"yes"
Together the two men lift the oil pump assembly, and gently slide it into the casing of the condensate pump, carefully checking that its drive has engaged properly.
Swiftly the bolts go in, and the 9/16th spanner goes to work

"Do you think Japan will ever give up?" Hirate wonders aloud
"Not too loud, you idiot, what if someone hears?"
"Oh lay of, you know everyone is thinking about it"

Okano does not immediately answer, concentrating on the bolts
"I suppose, but I think only the Emperor could really order it..........and if HIS life or status was threatened.."
Both men speak the words together, words 100 million others would share

"We would fight until the very, very end"

Relax, forumites! This all part of the great tease that 1275 PSI has used all through the AAR to keep us sitting at the edge of our seats - and to double the number of hits on this AAR! [;)]

Gawd, the suspense is killing me! I'm checking this AAR at least 5 times daily...

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/21/2015 6:45:24 AM)

Both bombers are almost immediately in trouble

There are simply scores of zeros climbing towards them, most of them however simply cannot catch them at this hieght, this speed.
Not the oscars, nor all but a handful of the tojos and Franks
But there are a dozen or more squat nosed fighters, new to everyone on the bombers, focke wulf like, that not only easily reach them, but climb above and level, and then sweep in, cannons firing

It happens extrodinarily fast,
A fighter screams in , head on at them, the cockpit explodes into glass, blood, a dismembered limb, a headless torso, and a howling, screaming gale
The "laughing clown" lurches, rolls, wings go vertical

And yet again, longpig finds himself struggling to remove a a body from the command seat of a dying of a bomber in the heart of a hurricane, surrounded by blood and gore, the remains of friends

This time is different though.............he's never flown a B-29 before...................

The Enola gay goes to full throttle and tries to climb.

Tokyo crawls by 5 miles below..

Some here may recall a little tale told of a certain old man in the grounds of the palace himself trying to whip a group of boys into an AA team.
That was nearly two years ago..............
Even the worst can be brought to a degree of competence in two years..........

Enola Gays port inner explodes, a first shot hit from boys long trained into men.............
And the fighters close in

Long pig hauls, without quite knowing how he has done it, the Laughing Clown back onto an even keel, she is nose down, but still on course.
Behind him the rattle, the banging of rounds stitching them yet again........

The enola gay wheels past and under him, heading almost 90 degrees to them..fighters glued to her tail..........The laughing clown,,,,,,,,,,,apt name to this circus, what ringmaster planned this joke of a show
She vanishes from sight, trailing flame and smoke, northwards

Then there is no more time for anything else but trying to breath, trying to fly, trying to get home................

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/21/2015 6:57:49 AM)

dawn
Mt Odare
40 miles north of Tokyo

a pretty valley, a reservoir, beautiful forests, rolling hills
The Horse shifts uneasily under the Emperors seat, unerved undoubtably by the snarling fighters above

he holds the horse, instictively tightening the riens, and peers upwards

he see's it immediately, the B-29, trailing smoke, and smiles in satisfaction at the hawks following it.
Something detaches from the bomber, bombs?..no............too large for that............and his eyes follow the bomber as it passes from view, the fighters peeling away, satisfied with their work.
There is a parachute..........almost directly overhead

A man?

The world , at that moment, seems to take a deep breath.

He is Japans emperor
Descendent of the gods himself, gods of the sun
Now, momentarily, as the Atomic fire surrounds him, he returns to its core

Atomic bomb attack :Tokyo
1 times B-29 damaged

There is next to no damage to Tokyo, it loses 25 manpower, 50 resources, a little HI(49 points)
As far as I can tell

They missed.

For Stock game Scenario 1 Tokyo's industry numbers are:
Manpower 162
Resources 280
Oil 5
Heavy Industry 2730
Refinery 200
Light Industry 2240
Naval Shipyard 97
Merchant Shipyard 70
Repair Shipyard 10
Armament Assembly 140
+ various Aero Engine and Aircraft Assembly plants (for which the player can change models and number of production points)

PS - those are the numbers at game start - they can be expanded by the Japanese player, or the Armament Assy converted to Vehicle Assembly.

1275psi -> RE: The little ship that could. (3/23/2015 8:44:01 AM)

The bomb has missed

It has also detonated far closer to ground than intended, here in the mountains, not the Tokyo plain
But it has still worked.
The reservoir has vanished, evaporated.
The Sanitorioum, its inhabitants also, evaporated
The small village to the east of the reservoir wall is flattened, charred, wiped away.
But the majority of the blast is contained in the valley.

Tokyo hears it, many even see the flash, and the towering mushroom cloud on the horizon.........

But only, at this moment, do a very few understand it.
