10/2/44 Its a quiet day, isn't it? I hear we are going home to Japan, but, you know, we have been hearing THAT for months now. Just like we hear the Americans are negotiating surrender every second month... But enough of that, are you ready for your Ticket on the Turbo generator? Achieve this my young stoker, and its no more boiler room for you ney!, you can come over to the luxury of the engine room, where temperatures are so much lower, and the space so less claustrophobic. Ok then, away you go, I will be watching carefully........... You've done it a dozen times, ........... First, align the circulation pumps...and start them. Good Vent the condensor............bloody cock is so hard to reach Alright.........the condensor shows only a little in the glas, better back fill it....... Thats better. Hope its enough. Start the condensate pump on recirc, three turns should do it. Crud, better check it actually started............(some times it doesn't) OK, thats the condensor taken care of, now lets raise vacuum. Gland steam.....ouch, hot.........2 to 3 psi...........bloody fiddly. Now the air ejectors, opening 150 psi steam to them, gently!, gently! Ahh, good, up she is coming. Excuse me petty Officer, will you pump the oil pump, while I test the trip? Ok, ........OK, and Bang!..that works. Re set it. Pump again please?............ Alright, open the main steam drain............nice whoosh...........shut em, crack the guard valve, crack the throttle...........OK, here she comes, 1000, 2000, 3, 4, .......8000 RPM -hit the trip. Hey, it works!.........reset, and now we open her up to 11000 .............. Down staris, quick, condensor is filling fast, shut the recirc, .......clear of salinity????..........yes, put to system. Open exhaust to the TG, open the guard wide. "Turbo Generator ready to be put on load Petty Officer!!!" "Well done Able , just remember though, Hirate and Okano will want it done a lot quicker than that........and also, remember this is where the Charge watch keeps............so be on your toes!!! easy hey? Ships never stop. Training never stops Promotions never stop They all promise a future Strange to think, Febuary 1944, and Zuiho still has , or believes it still has one.

11/2/44 Admiral Abe is awokened to the sounds of the action alarms, the strident screaming alarm that can drag even the most fatigued of men out of the deepest sleep, and bring them running to their stations He has been a sailor a long time has our fleet commander, and it is but moments for him to be racing up the stairs towards Zuikaku's bridge, moments to note however the vioelnt manouvering his flag ship is performing.......... "Who is it this time?" he snaps as he enters the bridge, out here, deep in the phillipine sea, this alarm can be only one thing 'Shokaku sir!".........she has been hit by two fish.............but both duds sir....destroyers attacking! It is 10 am, the sea he notes, is grey, white capped, angry. Perfect SS weather. Combined Fleet has ten destroyers escorting, 10 of her latest destroyers, and now four of them are knifing in onto the starboard flank, hunting the Buka "Enemy contact sir, Akitsuki attacking!" Faintly, over the wind, the crump of the charges, followed by more, and then yet more And abruptly.........gunfire "Enemy surfaced!,am engaging!" 'Turn the fleet west by North west, he may have friends." 1100 hrs, and destroyer Akitsuki steams past, her light flashing "Have taken 3 survivors, requeast instructions" Abe almost growls the reply "As if I need to tell him that..........send them for a swim , and send them swimming now" War is brutal. Mars is a hard god, I think. Barely has the order been carried out, barely have three brave men disapeared forever into the depths, than they are avenged. Ahead of Zuikaku, on the port wing, CV Unryu reels to two explosions on her port side., and moments later, CV Amagi bursts into flames as two more fish find her flanks as well.......................

"Revolutions 290!" 1300 hrs. Zuiho begins to work again towards full speed Her decks rumble as the jills launch into ASW patrols (as if they sem to help).......and the fleet commences zig zag . Tokyo is 2 days away. They will try to dash in. Word has spread, terrible, terrible word Combined fleet is broken "You realise Hidaka, we are down to just 4 fleet carriers now, 4 fleet, and us 5 little ones..........." Hidaka waits many moments before he replys, his voice thick with pain "I never thought we could lose this way................."

12/2/44 A massive convoy of LSTs, APs and support ships, has been steadily tracked creeping up the coast towards darwin. Today, battle ships Kirishima and her 3 sisters, position themselves just north of babar island. They are attacked twice by beauforts, shooting three down for no damage. At midnight, they turn south, and race towards Darwin, attempting to intercept To their east, 2 CA's, a pack of DDs , race in too, target bathurst island airfield Anger fills Japans High command Strike back!, somehow, anyhow, just strike back!

Nicely written. We always had a problem with the trip throttle valve on #1 SSTG. No matter how many times it was taken apart and put back together it just never "felt" right, especially once the speed gov. took over and we spun it to engage the trip spring. I took that truk'er apart as a MM2 in 1986 and one final time as a MMC just before transfer in 1990; and multiple times in between. I swear that shaft was about .0015" out of round when you mic'd it vertically, but not when you did it horizontally - which of course makes no sense. It always tripped in PM's just fine, but I also always hoped we never had to rely on it.... Just a feeling. Ya know? Dang that was a while ago. Whipple

No doubt the real IJN felt the same way... consider second half of 1944: us subs sank 2 CVs at Phillipine Sea (Taiho, Shokaku), then 2 more in November/December (Shinano, Unryu), and just for kicks they sank 2 CVEs as well during the same period (Taiyo, Unyo). Plus Battleship Kongo in November, and 2 CAs plus one crippled at Leyte Gulf, and who knows how many DDs etc! The IJN high command must have thought the game engine was totally borked. US Subs WAY too powerful...

this will be my only comment on this outside the narrative I cannot do anymore in the ss war, believe it or not, I am actually doing well against his ss, sinking 1 or 2 a week, and damaging many more I drove his subs away from the biak, ambon area I use massive amounts of ASW planes All TFs have had 9 DDs, 8 at times This attack was by 3 ss, in the same hex. I sank 2, one got away Its cudo's to cantona...........he micro manages SS like no other player I know. My only bitch........how a dd can be hit by a torp, survive, and be back in a month A 30000 ton carrier, iether sinks, or is ot for a year............that is not modelled too well at all. sure tahio died from just one fish, it took a few more than that for all the others. But..........it IS 44, its scene 1, i am still in PNG, burma, dei...........I no complain!!!

Hiyo was effectively lost to a single torpedo causing an av gas explosion at Phillipine Sea (also took 2 bomb hits, but they were immaterial to her loss). And Unryu was sunk by just 2 torps. The CVEs were of course very vulnerable as well - Taiyo and Unyo both sunk by 1 or 2 torps. And Mizuho (seaplane tender, but analogous to Chitose/Chiyoda conversions) was lost to a single torpedo hit. Taiho, as you mentioned. And of course the Midway debacle - 2 bombs sinking Akagi, 3 for Soryu, ... Can't say whether the game models this well, but I guess any hit on an IJN carrier should be potentially fatal, given the av gas problems and dire IJN damage control.

Graham, lying on his back, knew he had one chance, and one only He has not eaten for 5 days. If he is going to eat, well, dinner is on the move.......... He has learnt a few things since his last sorjourn in the jungle. carefully, slowly, he reaches for his boot, and the 6 inches of steel stowed there. "Come to papa, ...come to papa............ Snake does not taste like chicken. Its bitter, rancid, stringy..........even charred to a crisp, the sourness remains. But its food. 80 miles behind enemy lines, in one of the worlds worst jungles. But he's got a full belly now. Surely that counts for something.

Japans 4 battle cruisers race into Darwin waters, they briefly sight an enemy cruiser, which flees, but fail to intercept any thing else 2 hours later, CA Suzuya and Kumano, leading 7 destroyers, encounter the CL santa Fe and 4 destroyers in the same waters It leads to a decisve japanese defeat. Barely a single hit is scored on the allied ships in the long, long running battle, fought at 10000 to 16000 yards. The allies hit repeatably..........devastating 4 destroyers, and messing up Kumano badly. Daylight brings the allied airforce, which finishes of the four destroyers. Only the Santa Fe being torpedoed by a ss the next morning balances the ledger, a little, but not much. Something has changed. You feel it now. In the skies, under the waves, and now above them, The Americans seem to have the qualative edge, let alone the numbers. Hard questions are being asked of japans men There are no easy answers.

Side note: fairly recent wreck analysis indicates that Akagi was probably only hit once, not twice - the 2nd being a miss very close astern. Japan's carriers were horrifyingly fragile.

I recommend reading Shattered Sword - among other things they note that the strike photos from the US attack birds show the IJN carriers didn't have a strike spotted. They also go into the single bomb hit sinking Akagi in detail. USS Lexington took two torpedoes and three bomb hits. Hardly the same as sinking from a single bomb hit. From DANFS: "The enemy penetrated to the American carriers at 1100, and 20 minutes later Lexington was struck by a torpedo to port. Seconds later, a second torpedo hit to port directly abreast the bridge. At the same time, she took three bomb hits from enemy dive bombers, producing a 7� list to port and several raging fires. By 1300 her skilled damage control parties had brought the fires under control and returned the ship to even keel; making 25 knots, she was ready to recover her air group. Then suddenly Lexington was shaken by a tremendous explosion, caused by the ignition of gasoline vapors below, and again fire raged out of control. At 1508 Capt. Frederick C. Sherman, fearing for the safety of men working below, secured salvage operations, and ordered all hands to the flight deck. At 1707, he ordered, "abandon ship!", and the orderly disembarkation began, men going over the side into the warm water, almost immediately to be picked up by nearby cruisers and destroyers."

In addition to Gridley380's comment, I believe I have seen reference to a damage control mistake leading to the explosion that caused the loss of the Lexington. If my fading memory serves correctly I seem to remember that instead of venting the gasoline fumes out of the ship a mistake by a junior DC officer resulted in the fumes being vented throughout the ship thereby defeating the compartmentalization and DC system advantages inherent to US ships. In effect the Lexington may be an example of the robustness of a US ship minus the supposed damage control advantage.

While it is true that jap carriers were not as robust as their counterparts, that is not really the theme of this thread. I am not policing or anything similar. 14/2/44 I think we have mentioned Commander Korii only a few times, Zuiho's gentle but stern Medical officer. Unlike his fellow officers, he has not had a long and stirring Naval training, war has thrust him from a comfortable Country practice, into a uniform that he hardly feels fit to wear at times. However, like nearly all Japanese, duty is deply installed. Tonight, possibly one of the worst duties a man can get, liason with military police, shore patrol. On paper, its easy enough. report to point A -usually some sort of bleak concrete hell, filled with even bleaker less humourless people, and as the situation requires, dispatch your shore patrol sailors. Easy enough? Well, for starters, consider those twenty odd shore patrol sailors...........their companions are out letting loose many months of steam, and they have to spend the night dragging drunken bodies back onboard, or worse.. Sympathy is in short supply then......... Korii , as he settles in to his waiting room, complete with at least 6 months of newspapers, views the night ahead in the half full manner..........he can catch up his news reading, and tonight surely should give him some sights to remember in his dottage. They will.

Somewhere, a still sane or sober part of his brain is screaming...........don't be a bloody idiot, you'll break your neck, then what ney?.but that stupid voices hash is quickly drowned with another good draught of the amber........ "Banzia!!! headlong, he flings himself at the deck, slams onto the table, slides drunkedly, and with the yells of encouragement ringing in his ears, slides over the side....... 'Man overboard!, man overboard!" Flight deck operation, at the black cat bar, are under way..............

Its a long night for Comander Korii......... Zuihos crew will all get home safely. Some, shall we say, just might take a little longer than others to get there. but, as they say.............no harm done Zuiho is going into dock for a bum scrape, and those tubes are going to be replaced When our splitting heads are a bit better Think we might lie down for a while PS All of the above are true stories, only names and places changed. (One of my sailors once tried to steal a helicopter from the marines at pearl harbour, had it burning and turning too...........but they don't exist yet in 44)[:D]
