Just wondering if anybody has tried three da turns as a PBEM. It seems it would be a bit daunting but would move at an incredible pace. Have to think it would be quite a challenge

You certainly can try it. Way too many AI decisions for my liking.

Are you thinking our team game goes by very slowly with 2-4 days between turns? [8D]

I have a PBEM game in the middle '43 with 3 day turns. It is very fast indeed. Actually too fast for my taste. Extremely hard to plan ahead, every decision can lead to huge casualties, as there is no way to react, no way to stop things if they went wrong....

The worst part (for me) is that it's practically impossible to do delicate, precise operations. I like complex plans....and this makes them very nearly impossible.

On the bright side, the same is true for the enemy :).

Against all this i don't regret my decision to choose this setup for my first PBEM. It makes a fast paced game, the consequences are harsh so it's a good learning ground :).

Still....for my second PBEM I'm using the 2 day setup.....And I like it much more.

Requires a lot of planning.

Of course there are some that seem to object to multi-day turns for almost "religious" reasons - I've tried 1,2 and 3 day ... and probably prefer the symmetry of 2-day the most ... but for me 3-day is still probably the most realistic as it prevents too much "micro-management" by the players - who should think and act as much at the "theater commander" level as possible.

So while I understand what you mean when you say "move at an incredible pace" - what I like about the multi-day turns is that they actually slow DOWN the pace - of activities!

Yep. 3 day turns is too many for my taste; I prefer 2 day cycles.

I tried it just once for about 10 turns against the AI..., and it seemed that for every three turns played, I spent two trying to correct and recover from the AI's bonehead decisions. I'll stick with single day turns. At least if I get beat it will be for my own bonehead mistakes and not the AI's.

USSAmerica -> RE: Has anybody tried 3 day turns? (8/30/2010 1:49:16 AM)

I'm about a month into my campaign vs the AI on 2 day turns, and really enjoy it.  It makes you think and plan ahead (or pay the price [:D] ), but you don't have to think through every possibility that could happen over 3 days.  Do you realize how far the KB can actually move in 1 three day turn!  [sm=scared0018.gif]

I hated multi-day turns for the first 400 turns I tried it ... then I finally loved it ...

You didn't stick it out quite long enough I think ... [:)] ...

I think I'd have cheerfully cut my own throat rather than play 400 3-day turns! But to each his own form of self-abuse.. [8D]

bush -> RE: Has anybody tried 3 day turns? (8/30/2010 2:32:33 PM)

I know the original poster asked about PBEM games and I am strictly a vs. AI player. However, in that setting it gives a great balance to the game because the AI still plays one day at a time while the human player must live with their decisions for the full three days. I have only played three day turns in all my games.

dklein -> RE: Has anybody tried 3 day turns? (8/30/2010 4:43:39 PM)

I second what bushpsu said. I don't have the time for a PBEM. The three day turn makes it more of a game vs. the AI. It is hard to sit through the turn cycle, though, when something bad happens on Turn 1.

Just be thankful that G.G. didn't stick with the 1-week/turn that he used in PacWar.

But 1 Week turn in Pacwar does not simulate each day in between so it's not much of problem.

Mynok -> RE: Has anybody tried 3 day turns? (8/31/2010 2:55:20 AM)

Victory Games' Pacfic War used week turns to good effect as well. In fact, that was one of the best designs I've ever played.

I've done one 3-day PBEM but it was in stock days. Yes, the pace in terms of getting into the depths of the Grand Campaign is amazing. With an average of 1 exchange per day, my partner and I got nearly to the end of 1942 in less than 3 real months of time.

Its doable but requires alot of advance planning and risk accessment. The latter is useful for historical flavored games as players will be far more cautious. I've found 2-days to provide the best balance in terms of operational flexibility vs. "pace" (again defined as getting through the scenario in this case)

As Joe related, the effect on "game pace" is to actually slow things down because multi's impeed a player's ability to tactically control their forces to the microscopic level with near instantaneous reflexes.

jomni -> RE: Has anybody tried 3 day turns? (9/1/2010 1:59:29 AM)

Agree.  Now that I think about it, more days is actually more realistic. Once a supreme commander issues orders, it's not implemented immediately right?
Makes all the micromanaging futile as well since it may not be appropraite for the next day. So settings should be more adaptable instead of specific. I hate micromanagment and don't bother doing everything precisely.
