82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/7/2010 9:55:32 PM)

I wondered am I giving enough information in this AAR or am I giving too much ?   I tend to skip the smaller battles and just post when more important things are happening but would people like a little more detail ?

hey thanks for the great aar update i have been waiting for some time now, one terrible thing i think the carriers weren't the first targets of the air-force wish that was changed , anyway nice attack, Fwo-190's have been known to have bagged a few destroyers themselves

I also noticed that the planes didnt attack the three cargo ships that where with the fleet. So its hard to understand how they pick there targets ,it kind of looks like they go for whats shooting at them first.

Target selection in the AT engine is based off the SFT type (i.e. armor, soft mobile, guns, etc). AT places all surface ships in the same SFT type (surface ships). So it's entirely random whether the target would be a DD or CV. In order to give a targeting preference for a particular surface ship, I would have to place it in it's own SFT Type. This is possible, but would be alot of work. Not sure whether it would be something I'd want to attempt for this scenerio or not.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 3:28:18 PM)

still struggling through winter, I have figured out that I consume roughly 3 times more supply during winter and reserve supply is getting low so I have had to switch production to additional supply. But I have a much better idea of how much i need to stock up on for next winter.
its funny that in this scenario if you have plenty of supply your readiness will stay up between 90-100% but in the WaW scenario your readiness drops no matter how much supply you have. So if done right in this scenario you can continue your campaigns if you keep enough supply it just slows you down some and once a unit loses readiness it takes longer to get it back in winter.

With that in mind things are going OK in Norway for me winter is really slowing me down moving my armies into place but they are still capable of a couple attacks if i can get them into position.

First thing is that the Western navies have been poking around the Norwegian coast, looking for my Wolfpacks I assume. Which they found but at a high cost to them. Just two turns ago I sank a cruiser off of the coast in almost the same spot as that Dutch fleet is in. So I was mildly surprised to see those fleets so close when the West has to know I have a couple Squadrons of anti-ship planes in theater.

also you can see i am moving towards Bergen but its a long way and winter is slowing me down. I fear Bergen will be a hard fight.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 3:45:03 PM)

I was hesitant to attack because I am still building my Anti-Ship force up and am reluctant to take unnecessary losses at this point. The planes are mildly expensive and its an effort to squeeze them into my production queue. But I wanted to see how things went with that Tech-II cruiser. so I attacked.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 3:47:31 PM)

the cruiser-II retreated so I attacked again. This time i lost a Cantz anti-ship plane.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 3:49:29 PM)

My navy sank the other cruiser so this was the totals for that combat.
Not a good turn for the western navies. But once again it confirms that the anti-ship planes are a worthwhile investment.
I attacked the first time with 11 CantZ 506 and 10 regular heavy Bombers with a squadron of Stukas. I didn't send any fighters in the first attack because they seem to really take heavy losses and I am suffering heavy losses already with the constant probing attacks by the west off the European coast.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:02:48 PM)

The next Norwegian town up the coast (I forget the name) will soon be under attack. I dropped some airborne regiments north of it and they have moved into position while the 11th Army is moving in from the Southeast. The 11th is fresh from its conquest of Sweden and has been reinforced and rested.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:11:30 PM)

I thought I would give you all a look at my defenses on the Atlantic wall. First is a look at the Brest peninsula. This is IMO one of the weakest areas of western Europe and very hard to defend so I have built some fortifications along its length and have created the 8th army just to defend it.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:13:06 PM)

with the 8th army in position.
Each fortification will have a mobile infantry division a small armored regiment and a artillery division along with a flak regiment for defense.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:19:16 PM)

next is the 1st Army's AO.

The 1st is a huge army but it has a huge area to defend and is actually spread quite thin.
Personally I am not satisfied with the defenses here and have expressed my concern to the Fuhrer.

The 1st is red, the brown units are elements of AGC and black belong to OKH.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:22:26 PM)

the 5th. has been assigned to defend the low countries.

It is smaller than the 1st but has a much easier area to defend.

I am concerned that all cities don't have a small Militia unit assigned but the Fuhrer assures me that small mobile armored units can handle any problems that may arise and that he cant afford to feed a bunch of useless mouths.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:29:47 PM)

the 9th army is tasked with defending southwest and southern France.
so for now we have 4 armies doing nothing but defending our territory in the west while getting fat, lazy and chasing french women.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:36:47 PM)

The famous 6th Army.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:48:50 PM)

We are going to have to rely heavily on our Allies the Hungarians,Bulgarians and The Romanians.
This is the Hungarian 1st,2nd and 3rd armies. The Hungarians assure me that they have been building up and reinforcing their armies to German standards and that they will be capable of completing their objectives.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:54:27 PM)

The Bulgarians are already committed to Turkey and the defense of Greece.

My two armies that liberated Greece ,the 1st Romanian and the Wiking SS are now moving to the east,for now I am keeping them out of the winter zones to conserve supply.

Also a look at the makeup of a SS panzergrenadier division.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/10/2010 4:56:58 PM)

The SS Wiking HQ, noticed the large amount of horses ?
this is because I just now was able to upgrade the panzergrenadier units to fully Motorized from horse.

I have very few motorized armies most are foot or horse.

I did a little research on the SS and historically they didn't seem to have any full armies only divisions but I found the name of three divisions I liked and have used them in this game.

they are
SS Prinz Eugen
SS Das Riech
SS Wiking.

If I am able to create a 4th SS army I will look for an additional historic name.

RufusTFirefly -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/14/2010 4:28:43 PM)

Feb. 42, Soviet Union

During the last turns I tried to prepare SU as good as possible for the upcoming war. As written before SU starts with warfooting of 20 percent. Production was set mainly on PP and some lower extent to supply, mainly to keep some units mobile to move them into position. Storing PP enabled me to raise warfooting each turn up to 63 percent in Feb 42, although the last three turns I changed production to get more supply, more staff and some engineers. All HQs start with around 20 percent of staff and supply needed. The amount of both is still not sufficient but not as bad as in the beginning. Some HQs have enough engineers to be able to blow bridges. This might slow down the enemies advance. As I normally deploy local HQs and get them supplied locally I can blow bridges wherever possible. In case the enemy is standing at the outskirts of a city the engineers shall blow all facilities. In some cities this did not work as well as intended due to groups of engineers being too small. But at Riga for example the facilities are down to the ground and next turn the Germanys will capture a totally destroyed city. SU has no choice than this to survive the war long enough. Sooner or later West may help, but there is nothing like this in view as West is struggling hard to survive itself. (Situation in the West is really frustrating and I will make some comments later,why I think situation of West should be improved.)

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/15/2010 4:33:36 PM)

grumpy
think I found a bug
game shows I still have 600 manpower but it will not let me build any infantry or assault infantry or heavy infantry.

also a question on manpower.

does 1 infantry = 1 manpower and 1 tank = 1 manpower ?

the manpower report

GrumpyMel -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/16/2010 4:52:52 PM)

That's odd. May be a reporting bug, possibly based on when during the turn the report is generated compared to when units are built. It's actualy about 3 manpower per SFT. You were able to build up until thus turn correct?

Let me know what things look like next turn...we'll see if it was because you ended up running out of manpower and there was just a reporting error.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/19/2010 9:44:33 PM)

Grumpy
the next turn my manpower (regular) dropped to 200, but I quit making regular infantry and am just making elite and my manpower has climbed back up to 500. I am slowly replacing some regular infantry with elite infantry in all my divisions. So I have plenty of regular manpower now, it was basically a error on my part for making mostly regular infantry and not enough elite because of cost. As I pull 10 regular infantry and replace it with elite from each Division I wind up with plenty of regular infantry in reserve and no longer have to produce it to keep my losses replaced. Its a logistics pain in the rear but its my own fault.

82ndtrooper -> RE: European Theatres of Operations Game 2 (11/19/2010 9:51:38 PM)

ok the attack on Russia was launched a couple turns ago.

a look at the Finnish advance on Leningrad.
Notice the strong Russian divisions up north. I spotted them because i was going to try and cut the road to Murmansk but will withdraw instead.

The Finns have taken the forts and are moving to Leningrad. They are performing very well and are very strong units.

a quick look at my forces across the front.

The North, I had my strongest armies in this area figuring that taking Leningrad would be hard.
