its April of 1940 and we just launched our attack into France.
playing as the west in the first test game and seeing the difficulties experienced by the Axis in moving through the low countries I have decided to try and breakthrough the Maginot line.
I have three armies attempting the breakthrough with three armies in reserve that are also poised to invade the low countries. I also have 1 small SS army in reserve.
The 1st army which is stationed in the Siegfried line will be the first to attack and try to soften up the defenses.

here is the situation at the start.
notice my 14th army in the south still hasn't gotten into position to attack but will just have to attack when they can. This is unfortunate but it has taken a long time to move that army from Poland to here. The 1st army and the 10th Panzer army will have to bear the brunt of the attack.

The first army performed very well and has taken several of the fortress and broke the line in two places but at a heavy cost. The 10th panzer my most powerful army has moved into position to exploit the breakthrough next turn. We will attempt to bridge the river in the south so the 14th army can cross.

also note that the 1st Fallshirmjaeger has dropped behind enemy lines and cut off supply with the help of the Luftwaffe which blew the two bridges to the north

here is a supply overlay for the forces of the french army in the Maginot Line. they wont be getting much supply or reinforcements next turn

The french have inserted some armor into their garrisons which has slowed my advance and has worked well for them.

The 1st Fallshirmjaeger isn't my only airborne army I have three of them and I built 21 transports. this was a huge investment but with the size and scope of this map I believe that the airborne units have a big role to play and I will use all those transports for other things latter.

The 4th Fallshirmjaeger dropped into southwest France and succeeded in its mission to capture all the bridges but lost 1 transport and 1 Regiment to enemy planes.

the 5th Fallshirmjaeger dropped into southern France with no losses and captured 2 key bridges and a mountain pass.

The goal of the airborne operations is to disrupt supply and reinforcements to and from southern France and with this supply overlay you can see that it was a Success. It hasn't cut supply completely but it will make it very hard to move many units around and will eat up the enemies transcap fast if he tries to move much.

here are the totals for the turn. the 1st army took heavy losses but that was expected and it did achieve its goal.
The Luftwaffe took minor losses but we didn't really engage the french air-force except on 1 recon mission.

The Russians have a massive army on the border and it will be a chore to breakthrough them if we decide to do that.

amazingly good aar, love the paratroopers on the a large map, seemed odd to be going into southern france with them, but i see where your going with that, hell have to redeploy his forces to protect all those cities he clearly didnt even bother to garrison, and now it will be a nightmare for him to clean it up, at the same time his entire norther defense force is at risk of being cut off from the south, seems you may be able to just sweep south of paris and bottle him up north, i love it! good work, and a very original attack plan

I hope the airborne operation works out but its still to soon to know. I have a HQ for each airborne army waiting to board transports if I can capture some towns for them to land at. I also have some armored car units for each one ready to transport that can link each unit up with the HQ for supply.
The distance involved and the time it takes to move units around on this map will I hope work in my favor. As you could see my 14th army still hasn't made it to the front from Poland and its been 4 months at 2 turns per month.
I have 1 medium sized mechanized army ready to dash anywhere I need it to once I have achieved a breakthrough and my plan is to do just what you said and attempt to Isolate the northern french forces from the south. Which will I hope hasten their collapse due to the supply situation. Supply in this scenario is very important much more then in any other scenario I have played. You have to plan carefully what you build and how much because of it. There is no such thing as building all you want and then having enough production to keep it all supplied.
Which meant that I had to plan this airborne attack from the first few turns and start making the armies and transports. It also means that its important for me to save those airborne units if I can because they are very expensive to build and I can use them again later.
This scenario is a lot of fun and very challenging to play I am really enjoying it.

I haven't shown everything i am doing because I have invited Rufus to read and post in here also.

we had hoped for a fast breakthrough but high command realizes that due to supply issues we will have to destroy more of the Maginot line then we planned for.

and here is one of my main objectives. France moved a small armored car unit into the town and it may make it very hard to take.

I encountered a small problem with my airborne plans. it seems that you can not air transport a HQ unit and I don't understand why. you can transport any other ground unit in the game except for a HQ unit. So instead I have to create new HQ,s for my paratroopers and assign them to it which cost 50% readiness.

so after my attack on the city and assigning my forces to the new HQ i have 2 units that are all but worthless for a couple turns.

its a dandy of a armored car and in my opinion the best one the west had in the early war and better than the German car by a good margin.

and here is a look at where my paratroopers have advanced to push the ZOC closer to Lyon.
but like I said my initial plan was to bypass most of the Maginot line and let it starve, I realize now after examining the supply overlay that I cant do this due to my own supply needs and will have to capture at least one main town that I intended to bypass. (the town in the upper right that controls the road.)

turn 3 of the attack on the Maginot Line.
I took this after elements of the 1st army supported by newly arrived elements of the 14th panzer took Mullhouse and opened the supply lines for the invasion. (the town that is highlighted)
Except for that one action this is how my forces are positioned at the start of the turn

In this picture you can see that the 10th Panzer has moved forward to the river and passed through the 1st army's positions. The 1st army has been ordered to stand down and take some time to regroup and reinforce. 1st Army took about 25% casualties mostly infantry. 10th Panzer is still fresh and ready to go.

you can also see that we have captured almost all of the Maginot line except for a couple fortress across the river.

10th Panzer is also starting to flank and encircle the remaining french forces from the south near the town of Nancy. Relieving elements of the 1st Fallshirmjager in the process.

also note that elements of the 8th Motorized are starting to break away from the main advance in preparation for a dash to relieve the other paratroopers while lead elements of the 1st Fallshirmjaeger have scouted the way right up to Dijon France.

down south you can see that we took Lyon France after spending over half of our allotted air strikes on it to weaken it.

this shows my supply overlay which has me in the green all the way to Dijon with the capture of Mullhouse. This was critical because without mullhouse we had blue supply 2 clicks before Dijon
1 regiment of the 1st Fallshirmjaeger is still surrounded by strong armor units but we should relieve them next turn

here we can see the supply situation around Lyon and south through the mountains all the way to the coast. Notice the blue french HQ unit. that is the hq i had to make due to my original HQ's not being able to be airlifted. but we have secured more than enough towns for independent supply so these paratroopers wont run out.
also note the SS unit that I airlifted in to help the paratroopers secure Lyon.
this is prior to our capture of Lyon.

I forgot to take a picture of the totals for the round but will report that the Luftwaffe took higher losses this round than previous with several fighters down and a few bombers also. The french have made the Luftwaffe pay to achieve air superiority over an out classed air force.

the paras can be used again right away, its more a matter of getting them moved into position along with the transports than anything else.
and yes I think they will be very helpful all over the map from Norway  to north Africa in the south. lets not forget that our Fuhrer has his eyes cast on England also and we would never attack our friends to the east in Russia [;)]
