I've been off in lala land and had an epiphany.

The whole of the ETO could be played using MMCCIII

You would just need to download the correct Client to play the side you choose.

It would be a requirement that you don't play outside your area of operations eg Russians in France or Brits in the Crimea until you can fight your way there that is.

The strat map would be of the whole of Europe various sectors could be colour shaded Commonwealth/Russian/USA/etc.

The player would download the Client for the area he wanted to play and try and win the war from that area.

You may start in The heel of italy/Normandy/Soviet Union/etc and continue battling there without teleporting all over the place and thus mixing up Nationalities.

Any thoughts

Any suggestions as to how this could work practically?

Maybe play as Romanians/Finns/Italians/Poles?

It's a great idea. Pushes MMCCIII where it isn't really set up to go, but we are no strangers to work-arounds are we? [8D] Don't forget North Africa, except this time you can fight your way through Cairo, Jerusalem, Istanbul.....

I'll pop comments up as they come to me.

As there is no way to get the Server to 'control' this monster, it will have to be trust based, so things which guide/remind players of what's where etc is good, i.e. different colour balances on the Map for the different theatres.

Another approach would be to demarcate the borders of each theatre with impassable sectors, but I am not sure whether that would contribute anything useful.

Isn't there a way to change a Server Sector Map on the fly? It's a long time since I delved in the bowels of MMCCIII, but I seem to recall something about that? It would mean that new Maps could be exchanged with an existing Map without having to stop/start the Server all the time. But memory is hazy...

Are you suggesting that, multiple battlegroups (armies actually) are possible for non-solo play, provided players come in using different IP addresses?

How would you cope with straits (of the sea)?
