Plus...first Essex CV just arrived. And F6F Hellcats are starting to equip my other CVs.

Made a stupid mistake not to check... Midway, my main submarine base, Is almost out of fuel...

Been there ... done that ... many times and many bases! [:D]

CS convoys are your logisical best friend.

Since I check my submarine bases every time, don't use CS convoy with those ones. And I am still bit short of TKs...just didn't notice lack of fuel. Managed to get AO Neosho there in time from PH, so no disruption of operation.

Understand and appreciate the tanker shortage. Even under those circumstances I advocate a single tanker TF with a single escort set as a CS convoy along with a single medium legged xAK.
This would be sufficient to keep the submarine base flush with adequate supply and fuel.

I would do that for any base I would use as a hub.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/23/2018 12:34:56 PM)

Next is to start bombardment of Makin. I have 4 CVs in PH (one Brit).

We'll see how that goes. There seems to be quite a few Betties in Marshalls. But now, no shortage of slow BBs.

It's bit of "leftover" from my "tanker scare" when AI used KB very aggressively. Lost 8 (!) TK in Suva... So didn't want to use them in CS convoys.

Soon I can start using CS convoys as you said. At least with Adak and Midway. No need for Brisbane and Darwin...well...can be dangerous, though AI air had been quite beaten.

But in this game, gave me couple of nasty surprises.

Congrats on taking Bangkok in May 1943! [sm=happy0065.gif]

That seems early to me, even playing against the AI because you are playing a difficult setting.

It's because I rerouted most of reinforcements destined to Singapore. Thus, was able to make very good stand in Pegu. Didn't want to fight those jungle battles of Imphal/Kohima...and wanted to keep Chinese supply route open.

That is actually what UK should have done, IMHO. Give Bill Slim a chance!

I did let Indian brigades to go to Singers, but rerouted 18th UK Div to Australia. They are now enjoying wine and girls in Noumea. [:D]

Gurkhas and some other more "high-end" unit went to Rangoon.

I almost always also withdraw brigades of 8th AUS Div from Singapore. Just don't like to leave them there. They are now (as fully merged 8th Div) in Port Moresby.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/23/2018 2:33:05 PM)

I really recommend playing 2-day turns against AI. It makes planning more important.

And since it's vs AI, you can change it to 1-day if you feel for it.

HansBolter -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/23/2018 2:34:41 PM)

The AI is actually pretty easy to stymie completely in Burma with a defence at Pegu and extending along the river line.

It got where I was going it in every game and became bored with never having a campaign in Burma.

In AndyMac's Ironman Nasty scenarios he has infiltrators in Burma at game start that prevent the Allies from establishing the defense line.

In my current game that led me to decide to evacuate and the AI drove all the way to Imphal and Kohima, making for a much more interesting fight.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/23/2018 2:43:36 PM)

Even worse is "Fortress Java" vs AI. Scripts just don't give AI enough leeway to counter massively reinforced Java. I don't think IJA/IJN would have been happy either. IJA commitment to "southern campaign" was relatively limited. They thought it's "IJN war".

So, while not inclined to give Burma to Japanese, Java I don't reinforce. I like to play with historical units, just to see possibilities.

Doesn't capturing Bangkok allow him to now form Kamikazis?

No Kamikazes until 1944 no matter what.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/24/2018 10:21:39 AM)

Kamikazes will be an interesting thing, when 1944 comes.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/24/2018 11:15:27 AM)

BTW, you might find this very amusing...but...I ABSOLUTELY FORGOT ABOUT KAMIKAZES triggered by being near Saigon! [:D][:D][:D]

I thought it was Takao and Tokyo....

BBfanboy -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (3/24/2018 10:06:02 PM)

Several IJ players lately have pointed out that the Kamikazes are a net point gain for the Allies, if they protect their ships adequately. They get the occasional spectacular success but great Allied damage control prevents most ship losses.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (9/23/2018 8:03:24 AM)

Latest save for people who want to see how things are or just start playing from summer 1943:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/z12mgjeobg0gidc/wpae003.pws?dl=0

CAVEAT! This will be save for slot 3, so if you have something else there (and most would), please save first somewhere else (e.g. desktop etc.). Then rename the file e.g. wpae025.pws or some other free slot you have. This will avoid you accidentally overwriting your own save game.

Apart from Burma/Malaya/Thailand, I have played very conservatively. So amphibious attacks planned will most likely give decent game still. IJN CVs are still mostly intact.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (9/23/2018 8:24:42 AM)

Situation June 5 1943 and planned operations for 1943.

UK/Indian/AUS forces (6th and 7th AUS Div) will advance towards Singapore.
5th and 8th AUS Div will keep Port Moresby (with assorted smaller units).
SWPac and SoPac will advance through Solomon Islands.
CentPac will capture Makin and start to work from there around Gilbert and Mashall Islands.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (9/24/2018 8:10:04 AM)

I am constantly hampered by ships refitting at very unfortunate times. My invasions have been delayed months because of major surface combatants and landing ships gone to refit/upgrade sequentially [:'(]

Not that I mind having APAs soon or lot more AAA on BBs etc.

But SACPAC (Supreme Allied Commander Pacific) is bit impatient, now that after months I got back into WitP-AE.

PaxMondo -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (9/24/2018 1:02:49 PM)

Great to see you back!

BBfanboy -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (9/24/2018 2:22:51 PM)

+1 ![:)]

If you have converted those Dutch and British 1750 ton xAKLs to xAPs, you get a bunch of 500/750 capacity ships that can unload in a day (if they arrive the night before and have the whole day for unloading). They are great for filling in before the APAs arrive. And their 4000 nm range should not hinder you with the invasions you plan close to Australia.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (10/15/2018 12:13:38 AM)

Unfortunately had to quit this scenario. Seems there is something wrong with AUS divisions' TOE. Maybe some data corruption.

Their TOE now has like 1 Bn of infantry and e.g 500+ support squads. One div has some Philippine army TOE..[X(][&:] So, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th AUS Divs are pretty useless. That is lot of manpower lost.

Bit pointless to continue. Even tried bit earlier save, but it was still like that.

BillBrown -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (10/15/2018 3:45:17 AM)

Which scenario were you using?

Sardaukar -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (10/16/2018 6:52:50 AM)

I started with stock, but after a while, I continued with one of DaBabes from another thread.

No worries, I'll start another with DaBabes Lite. Sardaukar's Take Third. [:D]

It'll be Allies vs. IJ AI, DaBabes Lite A (only plane, ship, weapon etc. modifications, so updated AndyMac AI should work and make it more interesting). [8D]

Bif1961 -> RE: Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI) (10/20/2018 2:17:03 PM)

If at first you don'r succeed try, try again.
