undercovergeek -> Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 2:03:22 PM)

1. Soerbaja, Palembang, Singapore - lots of resources, and oil, and fuel - what makes what? Im tempted to ship the resources out but do these make supplies? in which case ill leave them there, and does oil eventually get turned into fuel by anything - its something ive never put a lot of thought into as in WitP, i just picked it all up and shipped it but in AE it needs a bit more thought.

What disadvantages do my LCUs suffer if a) they fight without a HQ and b) they fight with a HQ but its not theirs?

As always thanks for any help

Ok, let me take a swipte here:

Oil - turns to fuel with a refinery.

Resources - used by LI to make supplies. You shouldn't have to ship from the DEI to the HI though. Between the HI and Fusan, you should have plenty of stockpiles of resources.

crsutton -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 3:26:24 PM)

No real disadvantage for fighting without a HQ. HQs add a bonus for all LCU within command radius in addition to leadership bonus if you have a good leader, so that is a good thing. I don't think the unit need be attached to the HQ to get the bonus. There are also administrative bonus for units within range of a HQ. Refer to the manual for details on this.

John Lansford -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 3:39:24 PM)

Oil turns into fuel via a refinery.

Fuel, plus resources, turn into supplies, which in turn are used by industry (plus fuel) to create items like planes, men and reinforcements.

At least I think that's how it works.  Never ship resources or oil, always ship fuel.

Resources are needed in Japan from the Areas around the home islands. China/Sakhalin/Hokkaido at least.
Japan has also excess refineries and if the stocks of oil in Japan are used up you will lose fuel if you dont ship oil in.

Puhis -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 4:30:42 PM)

At least in my game Soerebaja oil centers and refinery are totally destroyed, always. I'm not going to ship 180k supplies to repair both of them, I just repair oil center and ship oil.

I'm not going to rapair any refineries outside Japan. Japan is running out of oil.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 5:03:26 PM)

Ok, to be accurate

- Heavy industry use FUEL and RESOURCES to produce HI and SUPPLIES (20 resources + 2 fuel = 2 HI + 2 supply)
- Light industry uses RESOURCES to produce SUPPLIES (15 resources = 1 supply)

- Refinery use OIL to produce FUEL and a BIT OF SUPPLY (10 oil = 9 fuel + 1 supply)

- HI points are used in production and can be stocked, will not be destroyed or otherwise lost unless expended for something useful!
- supply is used to supply troops, fuel aircraft, AND repair any industry or factory (1000 supply = 1 point repaired). It is also used as a good to EXPAND industry, aircraft factory, vehicle factory (in other words expansion of industrial base). It can be stocked but can be destroyed or otherwise lost.
- fuel is used by HI (as you saw) but also by your navy and merchant marine. It can be stocked, destroyed or otherwise lost

If I had to draw up a priority list for shipping goods I would say:

- FUEL to HOME ISLANDS
- FUEL and SUPPLY to your outposts
- RESOURCES to HOME ISLANDS (The closer the better)
- OIL to HOME ISLANDS - but only if: FUEL is going down and OIL is going up worldwide / there is no FUEL available in port but there is a large supply of OIL and you have a convoy of large tankers waiting (time is money)

undercovergeek -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 5:22:55 PM)

hmmmm - so dont ship fuel out of the Home Islands then?

Someones going to be angry at the last shipping manifests to Truk!

KenchiSulla -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/8/2010 6:22:30 PM)

I believe it is more efficient to ship it directly from the producing areas (DEI).. If you are short and really need it you can take it from the HI ofcourse

Ack! so I'm wasting time shipping to Home Islands.
Better redo my convoy routes.
What are good oil and resource drop off points near DEI?

What is the penalty for support being below requirement?
Any HQ in the same hex will boost support levels.

One advise Undercovergeek - get tracker... it is a must if you are playing Japanese!

undercovergeek -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/9/2010 10:18:38 AM)

im right with you cannonfodder - im not sure whats holding me back, i have it, i look at it, i think deep down i see it as the crossroads between becoming a casual 'i kind of know what im doing PBEM-er and enjoying the game very very much and coming on here and asking bits i get tangled up on' or turning into a hardcore player with a much deeper understanding of the mechanics and why and where fors - god knows whats going to happen when i say this but im quite happy knowing, as long as i ship what i ship from where i ship it to the Home Islands im happy, im doing my bit - i understand upgrades, engines, airframes, and factory building, and as long as all that can happen whilst im doing what i do im ok, i dont need to know that i have an excess of a certain amount of goodies so i can cut back my shipping by a route or two - although with Damians help this has become easier to fathom!

To that end, at the moment i have the following CS convoys

1. 35k supplies and 35k fuel from Home Island to Truk
2. 35k supplies and 35k fuel from Truk to Rabaul
3. 15k supplies and 15k fuel from Rabaul to Townsville
4. 20k supplies and 20k fuel from Rabaul to Port Moresby
5. 20k fuel from Palembang to Geraldton
6. 20k fuel from Palembang to Darwin
7. 20k fuel from Balikpapan to Port Moresby
8. 65k fuel from Palembang to Soerbaja
9. 45k fuel from Soerbaja to Port Hedland
10. 45k fuel from Palembang to Colombo

i think thats it

How do you get the resources to flow to Fusan? That would be primo if they went there but all mine seem to go to Port Arthur.

Q-Ball -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/9/2010 1:46:28 PM)

Cannonfodder pretty much has it, but not sure it's clear enough that you should NOT ship Resources from the SRA/DEI to Home Islands, unless you would otherwise send back empties. Why? It's not fuel efficient to haul it all that way, and also there are plenty of resources around the Home Islands; use those.

Now, if you are sending empties to Japan from the SRA anyway...sure, go ahead and fill it with Resources, better full than empty

Don't ship fuel FROM the Home Islands; ship it directly from the DEI instead.

Others have stated you should ship OIL to Home Islands. Don't repair refineries in the SRA; you should only repair OIL, and maybe HI. (and Repair Shipyards, but that does not relate to production).

Don't ever repair Light Industry or Resources under any circumstnaces

You should just set a small convoy from Fusan to HI. It seems to pull the resources you "request" by loading it.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Things i should know but realise i dont (9/9/2010 4:55:47 PM)

I my PBEM I repaired heavy industry I capture if:

- I need supply there
- I have fuel and resources available, localy, to run it

You have to ship fuel and resources to the HI. Any industry that is in the frontier produces HI points. Those HI points dont have to be shipped out and the supply does not have to be shipped in (as much).

Early war it is advantageous to ship as much Fuel (essential!), resources and oil as you can to the Home Islands, later you will lose access to those sources and if you have it stockpiled you can continue to produce supply, fuel and HI in the home islands if you stockpiled...

Also, try not shipping any resource to the home islands, you will run out by March 1, 1942...and that means no HI being produced so no planes, no ships, no tanks, and no guns...oh yeah, and your troops will be starving too! [;)]

No, you aren't wasting your time shipping to the HI...in a PBEM a good Allied player goes straight for your jugular...the DEI. You are much better off getting that stuff to japan where you can continue to use it after the supply lines are cut.
