S-type -> How do I take out bunkers? (8/14/2002 6:24:56 PM)

I have earlier enjoyed playing the original Steel Panthers and was thrilled to find a Win version that I can play. I remember the original game putting in a patch after a while to make it possible to destroy bunkers and pillboxes.

Now I encunter the same problem here. Surrounding a bunker with engineers and tanks and give them hell doesnt help. It seems impossible to harm them. Have I missed anything in the tutorial or manual? Is there any special secret how to take out a bunker these days?

Hi there S-type and welcome to the forum! Glad to see you enjoy the game. Always nice to see another Swede on the forum, soon we can outnumber the Finns. :p

About bunker busting; I assume you have played the tutorial? Bunkers can be tricky to assault, and you won't automatically succeed at first attempt. They are weak from behind so there's a good place to start. Engineers are prime bunker-busters, especially if they carry flamethrowers. Flame tanks work for the same reason, as well as HEAVY artillery. Place your unit next to the bunker, facing it and press the "Z" key. Repeat until said bunker goes up in flames :cool:

Be sure to rally the unit after each attack. They get nervous from pummeling away at the structure.

Added: If you don't absolutely have to destroy the bunker and it won't give in, tactic #2 is just to blind it by popping smoke in front of it. Then it won't hurt anyone. :D

Hej och tack ;)

Yes I played the tutorial and read the manual. I guess i have tried with satchel charges mostly. Guess I will have to be sure to have Flamethrowers instead then. :D

Satchel charges will work, too ;) FT's just does it better

As stated before, smoke and smoke some more.
But if you don't want to do that some direct arty fire doesn't hurt. Supress the bunk and move a Sig up to it and pound away.

Ofcourse if you are really lucky, like me, you can take them out with 50cals. I have currently killed 5 or 6 caves with LVTs. Somehow sprayin enough lead into a hillside causes it to burst into flames.:D :D

I believe it was Goblin who said "One 81mm mortar wmith smoke can neutralize a bunker, while HE just makes it mad".

Instead of close assaults, try just firing 'zooks/sachels/FTs at it by pressing 'T', making sure the bunker is targeted, pressing 'C', then choosing the appropriate weapon. I've found this to work much more often than close assaults. Plus, you aren't suppressed if you fail to destroy it this way.

maniacalmonkey -> Big guns do the trick :) (8/17/2002 3:34:17 PM)

Here's something I stumbled across during the (forgot) beach mission - I had a 150mm Howie parked on the beach and was dragging it out of the surf while my rifle and engineer squads were being cut to pieces by the coastal bunkers. I got a bit p*ed and noticed some of my guns had a line of sight through the smoke and figured "why not".

Long story short - 150mm's make bunkers go "pop".

fontenoy -> (8/18/2002 4:54:57 AM)

I haven't seen the bunker yet that can stand up to a "Sturmtiger":D

On the other handI've yet to see the "Sturmtiger"that can stand up to an AT gun,satchel charge,almost any other tank you care to name,bazooka or infantry assault.:rolleyes:

Unfortunately,smoke doesn't seem to unduly trouble the above mentioned units
:(

As you can see,my methods of destroying bunkers are(Ahem)somewhat heavy-handed.

Use your "Sturmtigers"for breaking up infantry assaults.;)

This has been a Public Service Announcement,brought to you by the Save The Sturmtiger Foundation:D

Just having a little fun guys.
Regards,
Fontenoy.

Alternatively, you can go for a "close assault" which works for smaller bunkers. This is where you get troops (preferably engineers) within one hex, and tell them to attack..... and if they pass a morale check (or something like that) boom!.... poof!.... no more bunker.....

IMO, the best way to take out a bunker is: Smoke and Bypass.

Smoke it so it can't see - then walk on past. No need to kill it.

If you *really* must kill it, as some sort of guy thing :) - then detach a squad to assault it from the rear till you make the roll to kill.

But, overall, it's best to just walk on past and thumb your nose up at it :)

Well first you ask them for a date. When you do this it is best to get to know them a little first. Here is a couple of suggestions.
1) Ask if they would like a bear. When they come out to get it you shoot them.
2) Ask them if they would like some refreshing Long Island Iced Tea. When they are total trashed you take advantage of them and shoot them.
3) Tell them a funny story about a three legged dog and a pony and when they are laughing histerically run in and shoot them.
4) Ask them on a date, make sure that you describe what it entails, a nice dinner at a sea food restaurant that overlooks the ocean. Dining on seafood bisk and lobsters while whatching the sun set. Dancing in the moonlight while eating shrimp cocktails. Then when they come out all dressed up and ready to go, you shoot them.
5) And if all else fails, ask if they would like an 88mm Armor pericing round. When they say "NO" you shoot them. :D

Just an observation: assaults on bunkers seem to work a lot better if your infantry unit doesn't move for the turn before it assaults.

G_X -> (8/27/2002 4:08:56 AM)

Assaults as a whole seem to work better as a reaction (IE, the Opfire kind) than as an attack.

On the Twilight: 2000 list, we asked this of RL MG bunkers. The RL veterans all concurred, the best way to do it is to go around and let the bastidges starve. If you need to, hit it from behind, where they would have openings for entry and exit. If you really need to do a frontal assault and have no other options, then you get any and all arty assets you can call up and have them pound the crap out of it while you split your team in 2 or 3. The first part is the MG and support team, they hose the bunker. As they're hosing and arty is bombing, your other team(s) move up stealthily, taking advantage of terrain, concealment, and the smoke/debris from the bombardment. (If you have 2 teams to assault, you advance in a pincer manner. That way if 1 team is targetted, the other is (hopefully) free to maneuver.) When your assaulting team(s) get in range, everyone lobs anything remotely explosive at the bunker and call off the arty. As these and the last arty goes off, the MG section limits it's fire, your assaulting members run like maddogs at the bunker--hopefully hitting it from the rear. You hit it by again lobbing anything remotely explosive or fiery into it and pumping lead into the openings. Lordwilling you don't lose too many men.
