winkelried -> Give IJN ships w/o need for construction (9/15/2010 9:01:40 PM)

How can I give the Japanese ships without the need to build them first? e.g. German Subs arriving in Bandung?

You cannot. All Jap ships have to be "built"; there's nothing keeping you from having a ship arrive in a port outside of Japan, however.

You can have them arrive at Bandung, with a durability of 1 (minimum building requirements, I think, and only a very small impact on HI) Have an upgrade option the same date as the arrival (or sooner), with no shipyard requirement, and a minimum delay of 0. As long as the tonnage doesn't change, and the speed doesn't change, the ship should be available the next day. The upgrade should change the durability to whatever you want for the sub.

I think you could also do this as a conversion, and have it availiable the very same day. I didn't test it, though. It happens with the ML/MGB British ships, though.

You would get your German sub with a very small committment of HI from Japan. The only possibility for fail is if the Allied player port bombed the base the turn you're trying to do the upgrade. It'd be easy pickings from a single hit. But, if you went via conversion, you might have the ship ready to sail the very same day.

It's also possible that changing the durability gives the new ship a lot of float damage. I think it's based on tonnage change, not durability change. Again, I haven't tested that part specifically.

bc

Thank you for the feedback Bradley. The approach is pretty clever and works - BUT there is a penalty in converting AND in upgrading for the durability you have to make up.

In my tests with a Type VII C class SS (durability 66) and a Bismarck class BB (durability 192) both take 90 major float damage in conversion and upgrade.

So it takes longer to repair than to construct the ships with their respective durability (93 days in normal for the SS and 1442 days for the BB).

But maybe I missed something ....

So maybe it's better to work with house rules and put the boats/ships into task forces in hexes far away (e.g. 6,107) and pull them in at a defined moment of time - won't work with the AI tough.

OOPS. Probably found a way:
1. Create a Task Force with a Delay on the date you want to make appear the ships.
2. Attach the ships to the Task Force.
==> The task force will appear at the point you defined at the date with the ships (even when the availability date of the ships is in the future) WITHOUT additional cost.
Can anybody confirm or comment?

Doesn't sound right. Check your upgrade/conversion costs. They should all be set to zero. I use this technique in my mod to account for economies of scale and it works fine. No repair penalties other than what I specify.

Thank's for the feedback. Yes I set Upgrade Costs etc to 0. But maybe I missed something else. Anyway - to give German ships the task force apporach seems to be the right solution to me, so I wont follow the upgrade/convert approach further. Thanks for the support.
