Where do i need to put these ships to get them to upgrade? I'm partway through nov 42 and have tried a couple of ports including Tokyo but they are not doing anything? (they are fully repaired etc)

Have you turned upgrade (conversion) - Yes ? And if you have big enough shipard (it is displayed in conversion info) - then conversion will start at end of turn.

Onlyest problem that I can see, that shipayrd dont have enough free tonage capacity to start conersion, then expandng of shipyrds will hepl (but only after expansion is repaired to size allowing conversion).

Yes, shipyard is empty and conversion is set at "yes"

Conversion is not automatic in other ship classes. Try clicking on "Convert", and look for a button to press somewhere in the lower left corner of the window that opens. It should sau something like: "Convert to Chitose Class CVL" or something like that.

As far as I understand, upgrades are automatic, and conversions are not.

Need to be in Tokyo, and I think you need to expand the shipyard. IIRC, this is a conversion, not an upgrade, so you need to click on the conversion: CVL highlight, then click on the convert button at the bottom left.

Conversions for the Chitose and Chiyoda are November. The Mizuho and Nishin are December.

click on the conversion thingy. on the right hand side of the next window it will tell you how big the ship yard needs to be.

Alright, I just went into the game and checked on scen #1. It is an upgrade, so be sure to pick "Yes". You need to have a minimum shipyard size of 50. And for the Chiyoda and Chitose you need to be in Tokyo.

they are at Tokyo, however repair shipyard is only 10 and i think i need 50+ ??.  no buttons to press to convert. Hope it doesn't take too long to build up the repair yard as it almost a year long conversion anyway!

If the shipyard is currently size 10, it will take 40 days to make it to size 50.

I think i'm getting a decent grasp of the game but theres plenty of curveballs out there

The Chitose and Chiyoda things are weird because they need to be in Tokyo. The only way to know that is by asking on the Forum. There is nothing in the manual about it.

Are you actually sure you even want to convert? THe CS's are actually invaluable for naval search when in a CV TF. By converting they are out a long time _and_ you only get mediocre CV's back -at best.
