Stupid. That's the only word for this debacle...stupid. And their given reason for it? The games industry has gotten boring and we wanted to do something fun.

Can anyone think of a worse example of games industry PR EVER? I've been trying, but I can't think of anything dumber than this.

Now that is dumb, but exceptionally funny [:D][:D]

Might see some of you over at GOG tomorrow? [;)]

mgarnett -> RE: GOG has gone (9/23/2010 4:12:47 AM)

I for one thought it was a great stunt.  In the end no harm done, but boy, did it get people's attention.  I can understand though, that people who had no backup of their games would have been somewhat anxious.  Having said that, they were very clear in saying that nobody would lose their purchases.

If there's a lesson to be learnt ...... backup your digital purchases!

Any downtime without warning does harm and break some trust.
These online distribution businesses like Steam, Impulse, GamersGate all boils down to the trust just like banks.
Customers should be able to get their games whenever they want.

Yes lesson is don't trust GOG and backup your purchases. Lol!

This is a true story. EA Singapore's facebook page has been "hacked" by a radical group called Authority for Responsible Gaming (ARG). A post said that in cooperation with ARG, EA Singapore will be banning MOH. How can EA, the company who made the game, ban MOH? And the Singapore government censors already approved MOH for sale. No google search will result will provide info on ARG. But the kids were shocked and they believed it... to the point where one called the convention center to confirm an event held there by ARG.

Now EA Singapore has "ragained" control of their Facebook page and is now running a promo. They will give limited edition medals to those who help them catch ARG! It's all about shock marketing. Lots of kids were duped and got angry at ARG thinking that it's real. It did generate a lot of attention on EA Singapores Facebook page.

[sm=00000280.gif] @ all the people who thought they lost their games forever.

Though, they did say in the beginning you would be able to re-download your games, so I don't get why everyone was acting so pissy besides the fact that there was no warning about the closure.

Nope, that's not what I said. They would have broken trust if they just shut down, never re-opened and never let people recover their downloads. This was fun, a joke, a stunt, a practical joke, but not distrustful, however misguided you may think they were. Take it for what it was and more importantly, how it was meant (this is THE most important aspect of this whole thing).

I in no way feel betrayed or find GOG any less trsutful than I did before the stunt.

Remember, they at all times said that they would allow games to be downloaded. When I headed over to the site and found it was down I did a quick google and found out very quickly that it appeared to be a publicity stunt. They never at any stage said they were closing for good, it just goes to show the power of the Internet rumour mill.

Lighten up!

Lützow -> RE: GOG has gone (9/23/2010 9:30:33 AM)

Don't think that was a mere marketing stunt, even they subsequently disguise it as one. With this action GoG did not catch many people outside their already existing audience and these again responded rather disgruntled.

Whatever, I was so pleasured about this behaviour, that I will log on for a last time, grab my properties and going to look elsewhere to satisfy my demand on retro games for the future.

Actually, there is so0me evidence that all is not well with Optimus C.A., the company that owns GOG.

Just a few hours before their big stockholders meeting (which was just a few hours before the GOG relaunch), they secured a short term loan worth more than 10% of the company's value. That loan goes for 6 months, which conveniently covers the period of time before The Witcher 2 launches, likely bringing in revenue. Mix that with earlier official financial posts on the state of financial health of the company as a whole (pretty right), and it might not have been 100% a stunt.

See, that is the problem with digital distributors.

I bought the Might & Magic series, Heroes III, Commandos and some else stuff from GoG. Didn't burn in on DVD, as these were cheap and they promised, that one can alway re-download from their site. Now GoG is gone and so are my purchased games. I don't mourn the waste of money but the loss of some remastered classics. [:(]

Thats why when you digital download, you should once download burn it to dvd/cd and then install it from that dvd/cd to ensure you burned a good copy.

Then burn a backup or two

Also put the download on a "stick" and transfer a copy to another PC you may have, so you have backups ... the original dL on hdd, 2 copys at least on cd/dvd and a copy on your other Pc..

Just downloading and counting on the service to be able to download it from again anytime
sets one up for what occurred to you.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: GOG has gone (9/25/2010 5:04:42 PM)

Pretty lame stunt. I won't be doing any business with them.

Arctic Blast -> RE: GOG has gone (9/25/2010 9:43:42 PM)

The really bizarre part of all of this is that they basically rebuilt their entire site. So two years of Beta testing the older site have amounted to nothing, since the new site wasn't tested and is full of issues at the moment.

Often such very specific strategies are quite vulnerable, though - they look good in theory, and probably has potential to work out well, but often don't take much fail of luck or unexpected move by the opponent to fail.

Another move/trick, that Germany can do (more tactical/low scale strategy rather than the grand strategy which are the main focus atm WOW Gold. (also, it is very specific, and maybe not well suited for AI?), but since I just now remember it, here it comes anyway ):

Barbarossa, Germany DoW USSR - going for a quick align of Turkey:
Requires: Rumania aligned, It 9-range and German hvy ATRs build (more ATR (especially the two old It ATR) and Ge 8-range (or as long range as possible) FTR would be fine as well)WOW Power Leveling.
9-range ATRs + 2 Ge PARAs located in Constanta. Odds are that no USSR unit are setup in or within movement range of Krasnodar. In surprise impulse: PARAs drop on Novorossiysk. It ATRs reorganised in Constanta.
Next impulse: PARAs move into Krasnodar, taking control of surrounding hexes on their way. Ge hvy ATR air transports corps to Novoross. 2 It 9-range ATR (and if available Ge FTR with range 8+) rebases to Krasnodor or Novoross Lotro Gold.
Depending on whether available and on German progress: rest of ATR and MTN units move forward to Dniepr line, in air transport range of the beachhead Buy WOW Gold.
3rd impulse: if no USSR FTR cover (or if Axis escorting FTR): PARAs drop on hex NE of Batum. 8-range FTR CAP to prevent USSR long range LND ground support (if no 8-range FTR available wait until no USSR LNDs in range, or axis FTR is in escort range).
Remaining ATR moves MTN units to the beachhead near Krasnodar.
If the paradrop is successful Batum is taken, and units (e.g. MTNs using It ATR, or other corps using the Ge hvy ATR) can be airtransported to the Turkey border. With a little luck 4 corps are present during next turn, and Turkey can be aligned, even when the German-USSR main front may still be at the Dneipr...

I did it in a game once, and it worked out very well. Unfortunately the Barbarossa didn't go well overall, and I lost the game...

Drawbacks: Rumania must be aligned pre-barbarossa. All those ATR are quite expensive. If USSR sees the threat a few well placed units can stop the trick, as can ground support LNDs and a bad attack roll when doing paradrops after the surprise impulse. Also, since units need to be moved from the Krasnodar to the Batum bridgehead, both are quite fragile, and USSR counterattack might be able to drive them out (although, for such an attack to be successful a decent number of units must participate, thus drawing them away from the main front).

Well they do say that no plan survive, meeting the enemy...

Back to topic.
GOG gave me Jagged Alliance Deadly Games for free!  Although I have the discs of the game, still looking forward to download from GOG.
No story but random contracts make this one stand out amoung the other titles in the series.

TonyAAA -> RE: GOG has gone (10/21/2010 7:42:00 AM)

Same here.

It would appear that they're giving anyone who had registered a Gog account before this debacle/stunt a free game. Darn good service, all considered.

Lützow -> RE: GOG has gone (10/21/2010 9:09:19 AM)

Sounds like GoG want to make up for their epic fail, but I won't bother with them anymore. In particular since some of their remastered titles are available from other distributors (i.e. GG) as well.

jomni -> RE: GOG has gone (10/22/2010 2:26:36 AM)

I tried downloading JA last night.
I encountered some problems.
1) Browser download soo slow.  Had no choice but to use the download manager.  But it needs to install two applications (Adobe AIR and GOG downloader).  Why not just one?
2) I installed the downloader and then GOG was offline.  Website says servers are busy due to popularity.
Everything's ok now but I doubt that their infrastructure is robust enough to handle the "popularity"...

Anyway, I'll ba backing up the installers as usual.

The GOG downloader runs on Adobe Air...that's why both need to be installed.
