bthom -> What is the proper way to install new scenarios? (12/8/2000 6:32:00 AM)

Ok all you SPWAW vets. What is the best way to install downloaded scenarios? Is it best to wait for an updated scenario or do the version 1.0's usually work?

Don -> (12/8/2000 7:32:00 AM)

Hi bthom, I will tell you if the first scenario you install is "Task Force Wilder"! Just kidding! Here is how you do it: 1) Create a "Temp" folder in your SPWAW directory. 2) Download the new scenario to your usual location, then unzip it to the "Temp" folder. NEVER unzip a scenario into the "Scen" folder! If you do and the new scenario has the same number as one already there you will overwrite the old one! 3) Rename as needed. When we make scenarios we have no idea what slots are open in your game, so you have to "renumber" them. Open the scenario in the "Temp" folder, and right click on each file, and hit "rename". Then change the number to one that is open in your "Scen" folder. 4) Cut or copy the newly-numbered scenario into your "Scen" folder, and get to playing it! I forgot about your second question! There are only a couple of early scenarios that don't work correctly, and that is because the OOB's were updated but the scenario was not. Usually "updates" to scenarios deal with things the designer wants to fix within the scenario, so don't worry, just download everything and you should be OK! Thanx Don, I'll give it a shot! Brad

An easier method of doing these two steps is to download the SPWaW Scenarios Manager located in the SPWaW Extras section of the Matrix Downloads page. This utility is all mouse point and click and saves you making any mistakes like typing different names for the three files in each scenario. Simply carry out steps 1 & 2 as above, point the SPManager source window at the temporary directory. (Double clicking on a scenario name will bring up the scenario description). All the empty and used slots will appear in the destination window. Highlight the scenario and a vacant slot and click on the move button and your scenario is now installed. [NOTE: If the scenario contains things like custom OOBs, you will still need to renumber them by hand as SPManager3 only handles .txt .cmt & .dat files]. how does this work for campaigns. the first i download was numbered 3 which i changed to 6 because it seemed to already be in use. The second was numbered 6 (great) which i changed to 7. I am sure the next will be 7. Currently i unzip them into a temp dir. then i goto dos and rename them rename c006*.* c007*.* (sorry i don't know how to do this quickly in windows) then in explorer rename the last file which my dos command does not change and then move them into the campaign dir. Is this the only way. I know it is easy with hindsight but it would have been better to create them in seperrate dirs.

Unfortunately SPManager is starting to show its age as it was written for SP1/SP2 but is still used because it works. What we need is an update or a new editor that will handle all the magnificent improvements provided by Matrix. The single campaign directory approach works and therefor by definition is good (and prevents programming difficulties for the basically DOS SPWaW). All we need is better mousetrap (installer)!! Maybe I should blow the dust off VB & give it a go if I get some time over Xmas. (Don't let that stop anyone else starting this project as it is needed). Reg. There is a movement on for everyone to keep track of what number each campaign designer is using so that you don't have to change them, jerrek. If you do have to, and you will when #7 comes out, there was a procedure outlined by Wild Bill that changed all the files at once. You'll have to search for it in back posts. And bthom, Reg is right about SP Manager. Everything I told you to do only takes about 30 seconds - what takes the most time is figuring out what slot is empty. Myself, I find that the dated SP Manager is a hassle (probably because I don't know how to use it to it's fullest) and many times just look in the Scen file or start the game to see where a slot is open. One thing you want to do when downloading new scenarios bthom, is to check the numbers. Downloaded scenarios are usually zipped. When opening the zip file do it first in a temp directory. Then look in your SPWAW\scen directory and scroll through till you find an empty number. Example, if you unzipped files are numbered scen115.dat, scen115.cmt, scen115.txt and scen11.rec, and you see that there is already a scenario in your directory numbered 115, you'll have to decide if you wish to overwrite it or not. An alternative is to change the numbers in the windows File manager to the number of an empty slot. So, if I see there is no scen120, then I will go to my temp directory and rename those files to scen120.dat, scen120.cmt, scen120.txt and scen120.rec. Now I place them in the scen subdirectory of SPWAW. If you keep the zip files, you'll want to put the newly numbered files into that zip directory and then remove (delete) the old ones. And if you ever want to know just what is scenario 115 in your scen subdirectory, just double click on its *.cmt or *.txt file. That will tell you all. This is a little confusing at first, but after doing it a few times, it becomes second nature.
