histgamer -> Tell me why I should buy this game (10/1/2010 6:37:44 AM)

I saw that this game is on sale and that fact alone perked my interest in the game. Now tell me why I should buy the game? I have WITP AE and WITP those are the only current Matrix games that I own and I am also looking at Bombing the Reich the new version ( I have the old one)...

I enjoy space style stories, like Battle Star Galactica and Star Wars but I don't really know if I would enjoy the game.

First of all welcome to the DW forums, and let me next say that this question has been asked in many threads prior to your question.

So please review those threads, and reply back here.

But to quickly entertain your question,

If you ever played Master of Orion, Distant Worlds can be considered the next logical step from a turn based 4x to a real time 4x. It is also a unique take on the genre, however where others this has been bad DW made it good.

However you sound like a grognard player with games like WITP, DW has simplified combat. The economy is also a macro approach where you have no control over the civilian economy but can indirectly influence it. Research is also a macro approach where you select a field and not specific techs.

Some of the things I would love to see in an expansion or sequel are a more details combat system like carriers and fighters, long range missles, interplanetary weapons, stellar manipulation, more detailed research system, and the ability to affect the civilian economy more.

I am not to much of a grognard I enjoy WITP but I enjoy simpler games also for example I use to play PTO II a ton!!!

You mention more detail combat systems, does the game at least have different type of combat vessels like frigates, destroyers, battleships or their equivalent or is everything one class. I saw someone mention you can design your own ships? That would be pretty cool even if it was at a more macro level..

Yeah the game has a decent amount of ship classes, however it mostly cosmetic. There are no class restrictions, like a escort has to be smaller then a frigate. So it is up to you as the designer to make those distinctions, and the ship hull size determines how big your class looks in game. So even though you designated a Banshee Class Capital ship but only made it hull size 50, while a Puma Class Escort had hull size 500 the escort would be bigger.

The game has a nice design feature where you can customize all the ships in the game, even the civilian. Keeping your civilian designs updated is crucial because a faster freighter is more profitable. The civilian economy even give your government a nice boost in revenue because they buy from you once and a while. The hull size is limited by your shipyard tech, and there are power, shield, armor, and maneuver stats to consider. Overall a nice system, plus there are quite a few cosmetic mods like my Star Wars mod, and other sci fi legends like Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc.

The simple combat system is attributed to the fact that there are only lasers and torps, and it is pretty much a point your fleet at the enemy and hope for the best. There are no location shots that can benefit from a flanking force, etc.

There is a human ship set released, however no Cylon ship set released as yet.

Check it out here,

Just be sure to patch up to 1.06 before starting a game. Older saves don't work in the newest patch IIRC.

Is it possible to start a game with just one planet? I loved the idea of a huge galaxy but whenever I do that I get like 40 planets right off the bat and I would rather my first games not to be starting with a huge empire already in existence.

b0mber -> RE: Tell me why I should buy this game (10/1/2010 8:34:27 PM)

When you start a new game set size as "Starting" at "Your Empire" options.

To add to what bomber said, if you want the other races to start on the same level as you, add custom races and set them to starting as well.

Personally, I'll be just as happy to not see any of those things in DW. Most of those features would change what makes this game distinctive (and fun to play).

I disabled pirates at first too. It definitely makes it a little easier to get the hang of things while you're still learning how to play the game.

HsojVvad -> RE: Tell me why I should buy this game (10/2/2010 3:19:20 AM)

I know this is moot to say because you bought the game, but for anyone else to ask, we should never tell you why to buy a game. You have to tell us what you like, and see if the game is for you. What we say is good, you can say it's bad.

Cosian -> RE: Tell me why I should buy this game (10/2/2010 4:44:07 AM)

You could do that ......

It will not be very long before you can easily combat them, however, many times right out of the shoot they are attacking something of yours. Frequently, I will pay the approximately 1500 for protection if I am being attacked immediately. It is a small price to pay....but I usually have 2 additional frigs and a DD built by the time the protection stops...then you have 6 combat ships and you can easily take them out and needn't worry about protection anymore.

Also, eventually you will have enough money to pay for some pirate info ..... right before you kill them off of course ...:) pirates can provide the location of independent colonies and special goodies at other worlds for a price. Eventually you will find them yourself, but I find it is worth paying a few coin for the info as it often will define the direction of your expansion.

So......I would say learn to deal with them because they can provide some benefits rather than turning them off....

histgamer -> RE: Tell me why I should buy this game (10/2/2010 7:42:27 AM)

So do you just find them with exploration ships? Also when they attack my mines should I just sit back and wait for my AI ships to combat them or take control for myself? I am struggling my way through this, I love the game but I don't really know what I am doing yet...

Fishers of Men -> RE: Tell me why I should buy this game (10/2/2010 4:20:14 PM)

I might assign one frigate to each mining station to patrol and then create a small fleet of destroyers(3). My fleet of destroyers would then be placed at a central location within my empire and be available to warp to any trouble spots where help is needed. I would manually control this fleet at the start because you have few military ships in your new empire. Build new ships within your financial ability.
