LarryP -> Need help transferring units? (10/4/2010 7:55:07 PM)

When playing the demo, I moved/transferred some units from Africa to the top of Italy by sea. Now after purchasing the game, I can't seem to do it again no matter what I try. I have the OK from the senate to reinforce Italy, but every time I select troops and hold down the "alt" key and drag them to where I want them, I get a dialog telling me that I can't do it. Here is what the dialog says:

Illegal Move
Armies can only be moved to a new province with a leader who has been assigned a command. You must either join with the current leader or activate a different leader who can move this army.

I have initialized the commander.
I have five ships in port.
I am dropping the troops onto Hannibals army. Actually, no matter where I try and drop them I get the dialog message.

It must be a silly thing I'm over looking. I did the tutorials twice too. [X(]

Yes I had that problem.

The way round it I found is to
1) activate your leader

2) check how many transport points you have, then select your leader and no more than that number of units.

3)Follow the manual instructions for naval transport. But where the manual says press "Alt", I found I got the same message that you do. Press "Alt Gr" instead. That works fine for me, though it can sometimes be tricky manouvering your fleet to where you want it to end up!

Even moving one unit I get the same message. I opened up the statistics menu and I have plenty of points.

"Alt Gr?" I don't understand the "Gr" part.

Thanks for your reply, and I see it's your first post. Welcome to Matrix forums!

Thanks, Larry....Take a look at your keyboard. Mine has an "Alt" key and a key marked "Alt Gr" (opposite side of the spacebar on mine.) Try that one. Not sure why that one works when the other doesn't :-)

LarryP -> RE: Need help transferring units? (10/4/2010 9:14:08 PM)

I see what you are saying. My two "Alt" keys are the same. You must have a special type keyboard? [&:]

I found it!!! I read your post again and where you said to "select your leader" is what I was NOT doing. I was used to initializing leaders for land battles and then not needing to select them after that. However, since the troops are leaving the group over sea, selecting the leader too is mandatory.

Thanks JohnBar. [&o]

I was just going to say, that I tried a "Test" game and was able to send two generals and two armies to Italy. Of course I had to use two separate activations. I'll say it again, Great Game!!!

Okay - I still can't make this work.  Which leader to I activate and which leader do I select?  By select I guess you mean click on the leader?  I've tried Hannibal and one of the leaders in Carthage and still get the illegal move message.  Feeling dumb here!

You have to have the Senate Ok troops to Italy. Activate a Leader in Carthage. Select him and any troops to send with him. Left click on selected troops, hold down the alt key and drag all of them to Italy. You can't merge them with Hannibal or any other army until the next turn, I think??

JohnBar -> RE: Need help transferring units? (10/4/2010 11:28:30 PM)

That's right, you can't merge them until the next turn. The AI tends to be pretty good at picking off these small detachments before they can merge.

AZ Gung Ho

If you are still having trouble, can you please describe exactly what you are trying to accomplish? I can probably tell you how to go about it. Are you on the first turn of the game? Etc.

AZKGungHo -> RE: Need help transferring units? (10/6/2010 5:39:40 PM)

Hi James,

I'm not sure if I'm having trouble or not actually!  I'm trying to transfer troops to either Italy or Spain.  They won't go unless I take a leader with them, which I don't want to do, and at least once I was informed the Roman Navy had killed them all at sea!

When I request more troops be sent to Italy how do they get there?  I keep being told it's an illegal operation, etc.  I get the same result on turn one and turn two as well.

Otherwise I'm really enjoying the Demo, and managed to keep Hannibal alive and doing pretty well till the demo ends last night, which was a first for me!

mercenarius -> RE: Need help transferring units? (10/6/2010 11:14:33 PM)

Hi Louie,

Well, you are not having trouble with the game's mechanics after all. You just may not do what you are trying to do. Units may only move from one province to another (or from one sea zone to another) with the active leader.

So if you want to move units to Spain or Italy from Africa they will have to travel with a leader. That leader must be the active leader, of course.

If they try to move by sea through Roman fleets they will be subject to Naval Attrition which can be quite severe. It depends on the sea zone and the number of hostile squadrons at sea.

You can first send a fleet of your own to drive out the Roman fleet if you have the naval forces and want to risk them.

You do start with two leaders in Carthage and the idea is that you can afford to move at least one of them overseas without compromising your defenses in Africa.

I hope that this helps,

James

Hey James,

Yes, that helps a lot!  I thought from the way things were worded that you could transfer troops to Spain or Italy without leaders since they would be reinforcing troops already there.  Now I know that was the wrong impression, and that the game is working right.  Load off my mind!  Many thanks, now to figure out how to get troops there without having them all sunk!!

Remember that you can also withdraw a general back to Zeugitania (alone) without having to manually use naval transport. When you do, though, he misses a turn while in transit. It's helpful for your reinforcement shuttling general when the Roman navy is being a pest. It helps for their return trip so you don't need to risk him to naval attrition by himself.

AZKGungHo -> RE: Need help transferring units? (10/7/2010 7:02:28 PM)

Hey - good point - I'll keep that in mind. Poor guy ends up being a boat and bus driver for Hannibal!![:D]
