Amoral -> What is the difference between ASW patrol and naval Search (10/5/2010 10:48:09 PM)

Is there any difference between ASW Patrol and Naval Search?

For example, if I set a group to :
Mission: ASW Patrol
Search - 50
ASW - 50
Rest - 0

Is that any different from a group flying:
Mission: Naval Search
Search - 50
ASW - 50
Rest - 0

both have exactly the same ineffectiveness if you are using search arcs...[;)]

(sorry, couldn't resist...[:-])

I use almost exclusively Naval Search and they spot submarines fine. ASW will get many more attacks against submarines, and of course if those pilots have greater ASW skills they will achieve more.

ASW also cuts in half the range of the planes. So, it's great for attacking submarines, but for general searching not so great.

At a 50/50 split I don't believe there is any difference...

However...here's is how it can be different; If you add 10 or 20% Training, you will also train in the mission picked (as well as nominally increase skill in the missions executed). So...for example, if you're looking to build up some future Navy SBD pilots...from Kingfisher Sqdns doing coastal defense, you can mission them;

Mission: Naval Bomb
ASW: 60%
Train: 20%
Rest: 20% (you've got to put some rest in or your ready rate of AC/Pilots will drop substantially over time)

In the example above the sqdn will conduct ASW around your harbors/coasts while raising bombing skills! 2-3 months later, they're ready to rotate to a combat unit with decent flying skills and nominal bombing capabilities! If you use them for search vs. ASW they'll also have decent search skills (you'll typically use SBDs for search duties off the flatops...).
