Time to try RocketMan's ploy and pop smoke. Both the remaining maneuver group and the suppression group put smoke out in front of themselves to limit incoming Soviet fire.

Yet again the Victory levels are changing. It seems like no matter what the Germans do they can't push that Victory level up there and keep it there, the whole time the Soviet VL keeps on climbing.

Good Hunting.

Has the idea of allowing firing through smoke ever been considered? I am just curious as this tactic would more in likely be used in multiplayer games. Of course the chances of hitting something should be radically reduced but there could at least be a chance of suppression allowed.

It would be nice to be able to fire through smoke without a doubt and would be very useful even Vs the AI! I would think it should be an area fire thing such as you can do now in PC-K in forests/cover area's wherein the enemy is belived to be in the general area (?) situation though toned down to say 1/2 or quarter chance less even? Maybe a larger (?) on map to indicate this type of situation and lessor chances to hit... just a cool thought[8|]

As far as I know there is nothing stopping you from using area fire through smoke. I"ll try to check this out again but it might take a few tries. The AI does use smoke, but only when it wants to, not when I want it to for tests!

thanks,
rick

I might have jumped the gun there. I did not test this either but assumed that the game does not allow you to set up a target point if you do not have a LOS to the point you are targetting.

I'm sure you can't area fire a point that can't be seen via LOS.

I know this is getting pretty picky but would this sort of thing be an option to be implemented in the next game? Not sure if it is worth the amount of time to be put in but it would definitely change multiplayer tactics. I know in CM many times an opponent would blanket the field in smoke to advance his units within assault distance. This sort of thing would discourage that or at least make a player think twice about advancing over open terrain behind an invisible force field to protect him. Not saying that you have to have a spray the area option but at least be able to fire at diffent areas from turn to turn to suppress any advancing infantry. Just a thought.

The ability would have to be weighed by its use because of Borg knowledge. It the target was known because units not in contact would 'see' something was hidden by smoke the player would know it. It may not be reasonable that some other units would area fire something they couldn't possible know was there.

Mad Russian -> RE: Line Of Fire (10/8/2010 5:12:27 PM)

You can fire into the smoke with area fire.  You can't target something you can't see. Just as in real life.

So, if I just put smoke down in front of you then you're automatically going to fire with all weapons into it?

Even if you do the full extent of what you can do is fire at the front of the smoke wall. Which you can do now by area firing into the smoke.

Good Hunting.

I might depending upon the situation. If ammo was low I might at the least fire a MG burst or two at two or three different spots to hopefully get some suppression. I was just stating that if I am holed up in a bunker or structure and I can physically see a smoke screen being layed down in a possible place of troop assault on my position it would be a good game option to be able to place a target marker anywhere inside the smoke screen. Not just at the very front where you can actually see. Just give smoke a concealment bonus to the advancing troops to lower the chances of an attacker actually hitting anyone. But at the very least you know there is a chance you could suppress the advance to give you some time.

rickier65 -> RE: Line Of Fire (10/8/2010 6:35:57 PM)

Smoke degrades LOS, but doesn't necessarily block it. and it builds gradually over a couple of turns. LOS in PCO (and PCK for that matter), is handled rather nicely. So you might not be sight a taget, you should be able to area fire into smoke.

Thanks
Rick

I understand that. Normally games don't let you target things that couldn't be done in real life. In real life you would be able to see the front of the smoke and fire there. Same thing in PCO.

That's already in PCO.

Good Hunting.

Thats good. Thanks guys for clearing that up for me. I am glad you can area fire ~into~ the smoke unlike other games that block your LOF just because you cannot actually see into the screen. Thanks again.
