All that information should be in the manual. Read up on leaders.

I haven't bought it yet, I was just trying to appraise the realism and accuracy of the game's command modelling as compared to other ACW wargames in order to see if it's worth getting.

Well there are 14 pages in the manual devoted to leaders, and 6 video tutorials with 18 minutes of information on leaders. You will be hard pressed to find a game at this (or any) level that does more to accurately reflect the importance and impact leaders had on all phases of operations.

There is an option to allow Corp commanders, a must to select. You can then attach subordinate commander to the "Corp" commander and I believe those attach commanders assist the Corp commander during combat. *coughs* As you see I have not read the rules, totally, ... anyway real men don't read rules. But I know when you don't attach them you do worst against an opponent who does. Some of those attributes you listed are self explaintory ... like Infantry ... 3 is good, 2 is bad and 4 is very good. McPherson is rated a 4 in infantry and Sheridan I think is a 4 as well but in cav.
