I'm new to WITP (thanks for the sale by the way). I'm starting to make sense of most things, but troop loading is driving me nuts.

In the Guad. scenario, I see that I need normal and aviation support at Lunga. I have multiple engineering units at both Noumea and Luganville that I think I should transfer to Lunga. I have created transport task forces at both Noumea and Luganville, but when I click load troops, there are no troops available in the list, only aircraft units. The transport TFs that I've set up have only (or are mostly) APs so there should be plenty of troop capacity and both TFs are docked. I have set some of the troop units to strategic move and this has been completed, but they still don't show up when I click load troops.

I see that there is a load cost - do you have to have that much in supplies to load the troops? Lunganville is out of supplies and I'm running some in now, but Noumea has plenty.

Also, I expect that engineering or BF units will provide the needed support at Lunga. However, I see that the units themselves require support. How does that work?

If the LCU are in strategic mode and they still arn't showing up when you try to load them on a transport TF then they might be a restricted command that can't be transported by ship. They can be trasnported by air if the destination is the same command as theirs, but that's an imperfect solution since you won't be able to get the heavy equipment moved.

Some restricted units can be changed for a cost in political points. The command they belong to will be either white (and unclickable) meaning they cannot be changed, or yellow (and clickable) meaning they can be changed.

All the units at Noumea and Luganville say attached to SoPac Rear Area (R). If I want to use the units, which command do I switch them to?

Ok - I switched the command to South Pacific and I was able to load the troops, so this is making more sense to me. I went by what command the units at Lunga were reporting to. However, more generally, how do I know which HQ to attach units to put them into play? Also for the Guad. scenario should I not be pulling units from SoPac Rear Area? Is there some other set of LCUs that I should be tapping?

I read somewhere that HQ can give bonuses to any unit within it's range, not just the one's under it. This means you can put them to any HQ you wish.
But most the important thing you can do when changing HQ is to draw units out of restricted HQs.
Assigning them to SOPAC is also correct as it helps in keeping track of units that you want to fall in to a certain theater of operations.

The experts should be able to give you better advice. :)

Almost everything with commands is purely for historical purposes. The only thing tht matters in game is if the command is restricted or not (as denoted by the (R)). To be able to move them onto boats you need them to be an unrestricted unit. Any HQ without an (R) will do. The benefits of HQs are shared to -all- units of the same nationality that are withing command radius.

No, this is the ammount of space needed on your transports. Either troop or cargo space, every unit will read something like 250 troop 2500 cargo (depending on size of the unit, type of the unit etc these values will vary), that means you need atleast 250 "troop space" and 2500 "cargo space" in your invasion fleet.

charlesmc:

If it helps, this is a Guad AAR from Nikademus, the Guadalcanal scenario designer (hope the link works).

He explains why so many units are initially assigned to a restricted HQ - basically it's to prevent an ahistorical rush of every unit to the front lines. Instead the player has to face the challenge of units becoming available in a more realistic trickle.
